Kalinga Super Cup: A young Mohun Bagan eyes semifinal spot vs Kerala Blasters; Goa locks horns with Punjab
Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) will test the waters in Kalinga Super Cup 2025 with a young, experimental squad when it faces Kerala Blasters (KBFC) in the quarterfinal at the Kalinga Stadium here on Saturday.
MBSG clinched the domestic double – Indian Super League (ISL) Cup and League Winner's Shield – this season, but will have none of its foreign players from the regular season in the Super Cup squad.
Instead, former U-21 Portugal international Nuno Reis will be the only non-Indian player in the contingent, while assistant coach Bastab Roy has replaced head coach Jose Francisco Molina for the tournament.
MBSG's foreigners had contributed to 48 of 52 goals (32G, 16A) in ISL 2024-25, and their absence could see Indians like Ashique Kuruniyan (two starts in 2024-25 season compared to 12 last season) and Sahal Abdul Samad (eight starts instead of 13 last season), who struggled for game time in the regular season, take centre-stage.
It will also be MBSG's opening match in the Super Cup after it got a bye in the round of 16 after Churchill Brothers, its scheduled opponent, withdrew.
'We are treating this tournament as an opportunity for young guys to find out how they can perform in the long run,' Bastab said during the pre-match press conference.
Meanwhile, KBFC looks to have turned the tide under new head coach David Catala. The side, which finished eighth in the league phase, appointed Catala before the tournament, and knocked out defending champion East Bengal 2-0 in his first competitive game in charge.

Despite KBFC's hunt for a first trophy, Catala said that his main goal was to make sure that his players are focused on the next game and not the bigger picture.
'To start thinking about trophies right now is, for me, it's not right. It's not helping anyone, and we need to just focus on the task tomorrow,' Catala said.
KBFC could fret over the availability of talisman Adrian Luna, who missed the team's practice session on the eve of the last-eight clash. The 33-year-old midfielder came off early in the second half of the match against EBFC with a suspected muscle injury.
Marquez eyes Super Cup glory as FC Goa takes on Punjab FC
Later in the day, Manolo Marquez's hope of bringing the curtains down on his tenure as FC Goa coach with a trophy will face a stern challenge when his side takes on Punjab FC.
After its semifinal heartbreak against Bengaluru FC in the ISL, FCG bounced back in the Super Cup with a 3-0 win against I-League side Gokulam Kerala FC, courtesy of a hat-trick from Spanish forward Iker Guarrotxena.
The Gaurs remain the only team in the competition who can win the Super Cup for the second time, after lifting the cup in 2019.
Meanwhile, despite a disappointing ISL campaign where it finished 10th, PFC produced a controlled showing in its round of 16 clash against Odisha FC, winning 3-0. It will be boosted by the fitness of forward Luka Majcen, who missed the opener with injury.

PFC's head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis said the Slovenian had trained with the team yesterday..
'Today, we will go to the field to double-check, and then we will make a decision according to whatever strategy and plans we have for the game (against FCG),' Dilmperis said.

Wasteful India Concede Late Goal, Lose 2-3 To Netherlands In FIH Pro League
A wasteful Indian men's hockey yet again conceded a late goal to lose 2-3 against the Olympic champions Netherlands, enduring their second consecutive defeat in the European leg of the FIH Pro League here on Monday. For India, Abhishek, playing his 100th match, scored in 20th minute, while Jugraj Singh converted his team's ninth penalty corner in 54th minute. The Netherlands scored through Thijs van Dam (24th), Tjep Hoedemakers (33rd) and Jip Janssen (57th). India had earlier lost 1-2 against the Netherlands on Saturday. India started on the front foot in the first quarter with as many as nine circle penetrations, but the goals eluded the visitors. India had the first chance of the match in the sixth minute but Abhishek's shot went wide. Soon, Shilanand Lakra snatched the ball in the midfield and raced his way into the Dutch circle only to shoot wide. Tjep Hoedemakers got the first scoring opportunity for the Dutchmen but his reverse hit from a tight angle was off the target. Minutes later, Hoedemakers got another chance but his deflection went wide. The Indians secured the first penalty corner of the match in the 18th but the Dutch defended well to deny India skipper Harmanpreet Singh. But two minutes later, Abhishek handed India the lead with a fierce shot to the top of the Dutch goal after being set up by Lakra. India's joy, however, was shortlived as four minutes later Thijs van Dam found himself at the right place at the right time to level the scores after the ball, from Thierry Brinkman's pass, hit an Indian stick and popped up in front of the goal. Hong Kong could be Marquez's last match as India coach
Kolkata: Manolo Marquez will hope to keep India on track for an unprecedented third successive Asian Cup finals berth when they face hosts Hong Kong in Tuesday's qualifier, which could be his last match as head coach. A win would be the ideal way to end his short India stint but for that Marquez's men will have to do what no Indian team has since 1957 – win in Hong Kong. All four teams in Group C, from where only the winners will qualify to the 2027 Asian Cup, have one point following 0-0 draws. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has announced a bonus of $50,000 should India win at the stadium in Kai Tak Sports Park which will be inaugurated with this match. The last time the teams met in 2022, India won 4-0 in Kolkata. Appointed last August, Marquez continued as FC Goa and India head coach till May 31. From June 1 to May 31, 2026, Marquez is on contract only as India coach but has said he would not like to continue, according to officials at AIFF, Goa Football Association and FC Goa. The officials requested anonymity given the sensitive nature of the issue. Having won the Super Cup with them, Marquez is likely to continue as FC Goa coach. HT had reported this in its edition on May 6, 2025. India have won only one of their seven matches under Marquez, four of them including the qualifier against Bangladesh ending in draws. To prepare for the Hong Kong tie, India played Thailand last week and lost 0-2.
