ICC ODI rankings: Rohit Sharma jumps to 2nd spot a day after training return and Babar Azam's West Indies flop show

A day after India's 50-overs captain Rohit Sharma was reported to have hit training for the first time since the end of the IPL 2025 season, the 38-year-old Mumbaikar moved closer to the top spot in the International Cricket Council's (ICC) ODI batting rankings, vaulting to second place over Pakistan's Babar Azam. Despite not featuring in an ODI since smashing a rollicking 76 in the final of the 2025 Champions Trophy against New Zealand in Dubai in March, the star India opener moved up a place behind his young teammate Shubman Gill after Babar's repetitive failures in the West Indies. The former Pakistan captain only score 56 runs in the recently-concluded three-match ODI series against West Indies. In the series decider on Tuesday, Babar managed only nine runs as Pakistan crumbled in a 295-run chase, bundling for 92. Besides Rohit and Gill, India possess three other batters in the top 15, with former captain Virat Kohli standing fourth, Shreyas Iyer eighth and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul ranking 15th. Following a largely successful Test tour against England for India under Shubman Gill ending 2-2 recently, reports have circulated on the uncertainty of the future of both Rohit and Kohli in the ODI format. While the two stalwarts had pulled the plug on their T20I careers following the World Cup in the Caribbean last year, Rohit and Kohli both announced their Test retirements within an inteval of few days in May earlier this year. On Tuesday, just days after Virat Kohli posted a photo of himself after a training session in the UK, Rohit also posted a picture of himself with former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar in the gym. Nayar reposted that with the caption that said: 'Let it begin'. Rohit has begun training with Nayar at a suburban Mumbai facility after taking a break of a couple of months from cricket following the IPL, according to PTI.

IPL: LSG set to part ways with Zaheer Khan; new mentor to hold more responsibilities

Lucknow: Lucknow Super Giants' captain Rishabh Pant with team mentor Zaheer Khan during a practice session ahead of the IPL 2025 cricket match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants, in Lucknow. (PTI Photo/Kamal Kishore) New Delhi: Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are likely to part ways with mentor Zaheer Khan ahead of the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2026, has learnt. "LSG is set to part ways with Zaheer Khan and the new mentor will be given a bigger role to monitor RPSG Group's other franchises," a source tracking the development confirmed to It is also learnt that LSG's owner Sanjiv Goenka, who is currently in the UK for The Hundred, will announce a Director of Cricket, who will oversee the year-round development of LSG's other franchises -- Durban's Super Giants in the SA20 and Manchester Originals in The Hundred. The former India seamer was also fulfilling the bowling coach duties since Morne Morkel's exit, who left his role to work alongside Gambhir and the India men's cricket team. Between 2018 and 2022, Zaheer was associated with the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise, initially serving as Director of Cricket before taking on the job of head of global development. Poll Should LSG part ways with Zaheer Khan as their mentor? Yes, it's time for a change No, he should stay A couple of weeks ago, LSG had roped in Bharat Arun as their new bowling coach. "Arun's role is also extensive as he will be given an extra responsibility for scouting and working on their young quicks for Durban's Super Giants and, from next year, with the Manchester Originals as well," the source said. Under Rishabh Pant's leadership, LSG had a largely forgettable IPL 2025 season with flashes of brilliance but consistency being a challenge. Work to arrest that problematic run has already begun with Bharat Arun first and Zaheer Khan now. "It's an honour to join the Lucknow Super Giants, a franchise that reflects professionalism, ambition, and vision at every level," Arun said in a statement. "My conversations with Dr. Sanjiv Goenka and the management were incredibly energizing -- there is a clear intent to invest in young Indian talent and build a long-term legacy. "What excites me most is the vision for long-term development. LSG has invested in a young, talented, and dynamic group of Indian fast bowlers -- Akash Deep, Avesh Khan, Mayank Yadav, Prince Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Akash Singh -- and I see immense potential in each of them. My mission is to help shape them into a cohesive, fearless, and tactically sharp pace unit that can challenge the best batting line-ups in the world. 'You aren't aware of your capabilities': Akash Deep on Gautam Gambhir's motivating words during England tour

India's Akash Deep celebrates after scoring fifty runs (AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth) Indian pacer Akash Deep describes his first tour of England as smoother than he had imagined, thanks to a coach who believed in him, a supportive captain, and conditions that felt familiar rather than challenging. He shared his thoughts in an interview with PTI. His maiden tour saw him claim a 10-wicket haul in one Test and play a crucial 66 at the Oval in another, both contributing to India's wins. Reflecting on the performance, Akash recalled what head coach Gautam Gambhir told him after his innings at the Oval. 'You aren't aware of your capabilities. I was telling you, you can do it. You have to play with this dedication always,' the 29-year-old shared. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Akash spoke highly of Gambhir's support, saying the coach believes in him more than he believes in himself, both with the ball and the bat. Adjusting to new leadership has been easy for Akash, who made his Test debut under Rohit Sharma and now plays under Shubman Gill . He praised the calmness and on-field intelligence of the new captain. Playing in England, Akash Deep found the conditions surprisingly familiar. Most matches had little seam or swing movement, which required him to adjust lengths similar to sub-continental wickets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Jolie-Pitt Family Shows Support For Shiloh's Change Drivepedia Undo He emphasised that experience and proper practice allowed him to adapt quickly.
