Early cotton sowing on 850k acres completed
Punjab Agriculture Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo has said that all available resources are being mobilised to achieve the provincial target of producing 5.5 million cotton bales this season.
Chairing a meeting at the MNS Agriculture University on Saturday, he said cotton had been sown on 3.2 million acres in Punjab, and through a special campaign, early sowing on 850,000 acres had been achieved.
According to the secretary, cotton picking equivalent to 800,000 bales has been completed and field reports suggest that the crop condition is "highly satisfactory".
He directed cotton inspectors to keep accurate records of seed cotton and processed bales at ginning factories, adding that female labourers would be trained for clean cotton picking. "At this crucial stage, any negligence in guiding farmers will not be tolerated," he stressed.
Sahoo said scientists have been tasked with developing climate-smart and mechanically harvestable cotton varieties.
He announced that an attractive package is being introduced for the upcoming wheat crop, while an interest-free loan facility worth Rs30 million is being offered to promote high-tech agricultural machinery. He said 2,000 newly graduated students will begin field activities next month.

Train platform, toilet fee hiked
Pakistan Railways has increased the price of platform tickets across all railway stations from Rs20 to Rs50. In addition, it has decided to outsource the platform ticketing system at nine major stations within the Rawalpindi Division to the private sector, with formal approval granted for this arrangement. The auction for the platform ticketing contracts will be held on August 25 at 12.30pm in the committee room of the Divisional Superintendent's Office, Rawalpindi. The fee for using official station washrooms has also been raised from Rs20 to Rs50 per person. This significant increase has resulted in a notable decline in usage at Rawalpindi Railway Station, now reported to be below 50%. Stallholders and visitors accompanying or receiving passengers have increasingly opted to use external washroom facilities, which charge a comparatively lower fee of Rs30.

Underground cabling project finalised
The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has finalised the long-awaited underground cabling and beautification project for two of the city's busiest commercial centres — Fawara Chowk Raja Bazaar and Commercial Market. According to official sources, the shopping areas will be made pedestrian-only, with all vehicular and motorcycle entry prohibited. IESCO has received payments of Rs180 million for Raja Bazaar and Rs130 million for Commercial Market to begin the underground electrical cabling. PTCL and SNGPL will be paid Rs30 million, while WASA will receive Rs5 million. The beautification expenses will be covered from the corporation's own budget. The project, modelled after similar efforts on Bank Road, Kashmir Road, and Haider Road in Saddar, includes the complete relocation of electrical and telecommunication cables underground, along with enhanced aesthetics. The first phase involves civil work and underground cabling by IESCO and PTCL. Sui Gas and sewage networks will also be secured underground. Fawara Chowk and Raja Bazaar will feature seating areas, improved lighting, pavements, public washrooms, and food stalls to enhance the shopping experience. Chief Municipal Officer Imran Ali described the project as "highly significant," adding that it would provide citizens with a cleaner, more pleasant shopping environment. Infrastructure Officer Rafiqat Mahmood Gondal said the project is expected to be completed within three months, with contractors mobilising soon. Following the completion of a similar project in Saddar's commercial areas and the conversion of Bank Road into a pedestrian-only street, the RMC had approved similar plans for Raja Bazaar and Commercial Market. The utility agencies issued demand notices totalling Rs223.3 million to the RMC. The agencies included the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), and Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL).
