Air India plane crash: Both life insurance policyholders, nominees among dead

Ahmedabad: Insurance companies are facing challenges in settling claims of the Ahmedabad Air India plane crash victims last week as in many cases the policyholders and nominees both have died in the tragedy. There are instances of an entire family perishing or one of the spouses dying in the horrific June 12 crash of the London-bound plane, which claimed the lives of 241 persons on board and 29 on the ground. Immediately after the accident, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRADI) asked insurance companies to verify details of the deceased with their database on issuance of the overseas medical insurance, personal accident and life insurance policies. The advisory also stated no claim was to be denied or delayed due to procedural formalities in the case of confirmed deceased individuals from the passengers' list and persons at buildings affected by the crash. Accordingly, major insurers like the Life Insurance Corporation of India, New India Assurance, HDFC Life, Iffco Tokio General Insurance, Bajaj Allianz GIC and Tata AIG Insurance have set up their help desks at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital to expedite the process. The insurers said they are matching the data shared by authorities with their database and are proactively reaching out to the families. Also read: Air India flight from Delhi to Paris cancelled after issues found in pre-flight checks LIC administrative officer Ashish Shukla told PTI that the company has so far received 10 claims at the hospital and its offices. There is one case where the insured individual nominated the spouse and both died in the accident, said the officer from the country's largest insurance company. Manpreet Singh Sabharwal, manager (claims) at Iffco Tokio insurance, also pointed to a case where the director of a company and his wife, who was his nominee, died in the plane crash. The company has group insured its employees with Iffco Tokio, he said. Tata AIG's principal officer, zonal operations, Nischal Buch said they have so far received seven claims, of which one is a case where the deceased had nominated the spouse who, too, killed in the air crash. The task becomes difficult when both the insured individual and the nominee die, like in the case of air accidents, representatives of the insurance firms maintained. Shukla said in normal circumstances, they seek a succession certificate when both the insured individual and the nominee have died. As a special case, the company has now made an exception. Also read: 66 Dreamliner flights cancelled since fatal Air India crash that killed 270 "If both the insured as well as the nominee have died, we look for class one heirs, which is typically blood relatives like children. If there are multiple children, then we take a declaration from the heirs on how the claim is to be settled and an indemnity bond has to be submitted to the company," he said. Buch said his company's legal team is exploring if joint declarations of the heirs can be sought in cases where both the insured and the nominee have died. It is not just the life that is insured. There are cases of personal accident insurance, luggage insurance and even marine cargo insurance. Prakash Khanchandani, administrative officer with The New India Assurance, said the company has so far received seven claims -- five related to personal accident policy and two of the marine cargo on board. It has settled one marine cargo claim of ₹6.50 lakh. In cases of personal accident policy, the nominees are yet to submit their details as they are still in the process of disposing of the bodies, he said. Bajaj Allianz regional manager Nimish Joshi said the company has received four claims related to the crash victims. One is a marine cargo claim of ₹55 lakh which has been settled. The remaining three are travel insurance policies of ₹10 lakh each and those claims have also been settled, he added.

N. Chandrasekaran gets open letter over absence at Captain Sumeet Sabharwal's funeral: ‘Is this New India?'

On June 17, Pushkaraj Sabharwal stood with teary eyes and folded hands outside his Mumbai home. He paid the final tribute to his son, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal. The seasoned pilot died in the tragic Air India AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. Now, an open letter shared by veteran pilot Captain Shakti Lumba has gone viral. The writer of the open latter, whose name is withheld, addressed Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran's alleged absence during Captain Sumeet Sabharwal's funeral. The open letter pointed out that Chandrasekaran was in Mumbai on the same day but didn't attend, nor did any Air India or Tata Sons board member. 'No shoulder to lean on. No condolences delivered in person. One wonders: is this the 'New India' the Tata Group wants to lead?' said the open letter.. According to him, Sabharwal was not just an employee but a valued commander and part of the Tata family. Lumba recalled how former Air India Chairman Ashwani Lohani once personally supported a junior staff member's family during the tragedy. 'When a relatively junior Flight Despatcher passed away in Mumbai years ago, Lohani didn't send a card or a floral arrangement. He showed up — and went further, offering the grieving wife a job. No cameras. No LinkedIn posts. Just humanity,' the open letter added. Captain Lumba questioned whether past leaders like J.R.D. Tata or Ratan Tata would have skipped such a moment. According to the veteran pilot, leadership means showing up in difficult times. 'The message is loud and clear: You're just a name in a roster. A code in the system. Replaceable. Today, the employees of Air India feel abandoned. Not by fate, not by circumstance, but by you. And in your absence, we saw everything,' the open letter said. Social media users echoed the sentiments shared in the open letter. 'Tata Companies has lost all its credibility and respect after the passing of Ratan Tata. Sad demise of a great company,' wrote one user. Another wrote, 'Air India must provide a full time care taker to his father. He is elder and now as his life would be more difficult with out a son. He is very lonely now.' 'After ratan tata it's not the same TATA group. Wouldn't have been surprised if this was done by Adani and Ambani but seeing this from Tata is disheartening,' wrote another user. According to Air India, multiple representatives of the company attended Captain Sabharwal's funeral. 'At his funeral today, our COO, Tata Group's HR Head and Communications Head joined his family, friends, and colleagues to pay their respects, share in their pain and grief, and to offer moral support on behalf of the entire Air India and Tata Group family,' Air India wrote on X.

Bali-Delhi Air India Flight Diverted To Varanasi Due To Bad Weather

Varanasi (UP): An Air India flight from Bali to Delhi was diverted to Varanasi's Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport due to bad weather in the national capital, an official said on Wednesday. The flight later departed for Delhi the same night after the stop at Varanasi on Tuesday. Puneet Gupta, Director of Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Varanasi, said the Air India flight AI 2146 had to be diverted as poor weather conditions over Delhi severely reduced visibility, making it unsafe for the aircraft to land. "The flight, carrying 187 passengers, safely landed at Varanasi airport," Mr Gupta said, adding that "all necessary passenger amenities were ensured during the delay. The plane was cleared for take-off and flown back to Delhi later in the night. A separate Delhi-Bali flight was diverted back to the national capital on Wednesday due to a volcanic eruption near Bali airport. The flight safely landed back in Delhi and all passengers have disembarked, Air India said in a statement. "Air India flight AI2145 on June 18 from Delhi to Bali was advised to air return to Delhi due to reports of volcanic eruption near destination airport Bali, in the interest of safety," it said. On Tuesday, AI 2146 was scheduled for departure from the Denpasar International Airport in Bali, Indonesia at 10.30 am (local time) and was to land at the Indira Gandhi International Airport around 2.30 pm. According to flight tracking website FlightRadar24, the Airbus A321 plane landed in Varanasi instead of Delhi around 3.50 pm. The flight was near the Delhi-UP border when it was diverted to Varanasi, it showed. Air India has faced successive cancellations and diversions since a London-bound flight operated by it crashed in Ahmedabad shortly after take-off on June 12. Over 270 people, including those onboard the plane and on the ground, died in the crash. On Tuesday, Air India cancelled seven international flights, taking the total number of cancellations by the airlines since the Ahmedabad crash to over 80. Flight operations at the Delhi airport faced several disruptions on Tuesday, with 14 diverted flights -- six to Bhopal, three to Chandigarh, two to Amritsar, one each to Ahmedabad, Varanasi and Lucknow. Over 400 flights were delayed and some flights were cancelled at the airport on Tuesday, as per data from Flightradar24. In a post on X, Air India said that due to inclement weather conditions in Delhi, "our flight operations are getting impacted with some diversions".
