Vidyadas Baba takes charge as Anjanadri temple's chief priest

Time of India03-06-2025
Gangavathi (Koppal): Vidyadas Baba has taken charge as the chief priest of the Sri Anjaneya Swamy Temple at Anjanadri Hill in Chikka Rampur village, a location considered sacred as Lord Hanuman's birthplace.
Following his petition to the
Supreme Court
challenging his dismissal and the temple's acquisition, the court issued a notice to the state govt on May 27, instructing him to continue conducting the temple's puja and karmic activities.
Upon his arrival at Anjanadri, Vidyadas addressed the gathered devotees, proclaiming that the truth was victorious. He said the temple premises will be kept clean, and religious activities, including Sanskrit Pathshala, Homa Havan and Hanuman Chalisa chanting, will be organised regularly.
Additionally, a special puja for Anjaneya will occur every Saturday, with free food provided to the devotees.
The dispute began in 2018 when the state govt attempted to place the Anjanadri Temple under the Muzrai department's control using the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowments Act, 1997. This action faced strong opposition from Vidyadas, whose family maintained the temple's religious practices for over 120 years following the Ramanandi tradition.
On May 27, the Supreme Court instructed the state govt to retain Vidyadas as chief priest, allowing him to continue his religious duties and reside in the Mandir room. This decision temporarily halted the govt's takeover plans and reinforced the High Court's 2023 interim order permitting his continued service.
The Supreme Court stated that interference with the Pandit's removal or religious practices would face serious consequences.
While acknowledging the Muzrai department's administrative role, it upheld Vidyadas and his family's right to conduct worship undisturbed, ensuring their accommodation and basic needs at the premises.
Before 2018, the Kishkinda Trust and Pandit family managed the mandir independently without govt involvement. The Koppal deputy commissioner's 2018 order transferred administrative control to the govt under the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowments Act, 1997.
The writ petition lodged by Vidyadas is awaiting resolution in the Karnataka high court. The order from the Supreme Court functions as a provisional directive, compelling compliance with the earlier orders of the high court and advising the state govt against any breaches.

Revanth invokes Telugu pride, drums up support for Justice Reddy

Hyderabad: Hours after the INDIA bloc announced retired Supreme Court judge Justice B Sudershan Reddy as its vice-presidential candidate, chief minister A Revanth Reddy Tuesday made an impassioned appeal to Telugu parties across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to rise above politics and rally behind the "son of the soil". "It is an election between saving the Constitution, reservations, and democracy, which Justice Reddy represents, versus CP Radhakrishnan, the BJP-led NDA's candidate who stands for changing the Constitution, abolishing reservations, and undermining democratic principles," Revanth claimed. Emphasising that Justice Reddy was an 'apolitical' candidate, Revanth urged leaders of all parties — TDP, YSRCP, BRS, AIMIM, Jana Sena, Left, and even BJP MPs from both states — to support him. "On behalf of the Telugu people, I appeal to every party to unite on one platform to save the Constitution, reservations and democracy, and to uphold the self-respect of Telugus," he said. "He is a legal luminary and a constitutional expert who will safeguard not only the Constitution and democracy but also reservations, which are under attack from BJP," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unbeatable Prices on Temu TEMU Shop Now Undo Revanth reminded that Justice Reddy had chaired the independent panel that studied Telangana's caste survey. "If he is elected vice-president, he will play a crucial role in getting 42% reservations for OBCs approved. He knows the survey in depth and has advised the state govt on ensuring justice for backward classes. He will be the strongest voice of OBCs in Parliament," he asserted. To questions on his role in finalising the candidature, Revanth said: "Justice Reddy is INDIA bloc's choice. He gave a presentation on caste survey analysis to MPs in Delhi, and they recognised his worth as a constitutional expert." Though both the NDA and the INDIA bloc candidates are from the South, Revanth accused BJP of trying to deepen north-south divides. "Congress and the INDIA bloc are fighting to unite the country. At least the 60 MPs — 42 in the Lok Sabha and 18 in the Rajya Sabha — from the two Telugu states must come together to support Justice Reddy," he said. BOX: Drawing on NTR's legacy Chief minister A Revanth Reddy invoked former Andhra Pradesh CM N T Rama Rao's statesmanship while appealing to all Telugu parties to back Justice (retd.) B Sudershan Reddy's candidature. "I appeal to Chandrababu Naidu, K Chandrasekhar Rao, Jagan Mohan Reddy, Pawan Kalyan, Asaduddin Owaisi and Left leaders to take inspiration from NTR, who refused to field a candidate against P V Narasimha Rao in Nandyal when Rao became prime minister. Let us protect the pride and honour of the Telugu people in the same spirit," he urged. Revanth said he would "most likely" attend the nomination event of Justice Reddy in Delhi. Pocso shouldn't be slapped on teens in love: SC

Supreme Court NEW DELHI: Observing that it was not a crime to love and teenagers falling in love should not be treated as criminals and sent behind bars, Supreme Court on Tuesday stressed the need to protect mutual romantic relations between adolescents instead of criminalising them under Pocso Act . At a time when the Centre is strongly objecting to the idea of reducing the age of consent from 18 to 16 years, a bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and R Mahadevan said genuine romantic relations should be on a different footing. "We are facing situations of minors falling in love and they even run away... It is a harsh reality. Same law (Pocso) should not be applied in such cases. Do not treat the minors as normal criminals in case of genuine romantic relations. Social reality should be kept in mind," the bench said while hearing a batch of petitions filed by NCPCR and NCW challenging various HC orders providing protection to minors who had eloped. The court was also hearing a plea by Bachpan Bachao Andolan challenging Tamil Nadu govt's circular to police to not make "hasty" arrests under the Pocso Act in cases involving "love affairs and marriages" and stating that arrests under Pocso should be made only after permission from an SP-level officer. Senior advocate H S Phulka said the circular was prone to misuse in case of adults getting into physical relations with minors. The bench, however, said it was for the police to apply its mind on a case-to-case basis. "Nowadays, boys and girls go to the same educational institutions and develop feelings for each other. It is a reality. Can you say that it's a crime to love and the minors should face rape charges... There are romantic cases where teenagers on the verge of majority run away... don't read such as criminal cases. It is more traumatic for girls who get separated from boys and see them going to jail...," the bench said. The court added that parents of girls would often use Pocso to cover up an elopement. The bench said it was strange that bodies meant to protect the interests of children and women were assailing the protection given to minors by HCs. The court said they had no locus standi to file appeals and asked them to take up cases with better causes. SC pointed out that if the court did not protect such a couple, they may be killed for "honour" by their families. "If two minor children are protected by HC, how can NCPCR challenge such an order? It is strange that NCPCR, which is for protecting children, has challenged such an order," it said.

SC curbs Kerala governor's authority in VC selection, empowers CM

T'puram: The order passed by the Supreme Court on Monday to resolve the impasse over the selection and appointment of vice-chancellors (VC) at Kerala Technological University and Kerala University of Digital Sciences has turned out to be a huge setback for the governor. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It has almost stripped him of his authority as chancellor of universities in Kerala — except National University of Advanced Legal Studies, where the high court's chief justice serves as chancellor. SC decided not to include the UGC nominee in the search committee and empowered the chief minister with unprecedented authority to decide candidates. As per the order, the search committee, headed by a retired SC judge, must share the details of shortlisted candidates with the CM, who will recommend them to the chancellor, in order of preference, for appointment as VCs. The chancellor shall then appoint VCs from the empanelled names, following the CM's recommended order of preference. If the chancellor has reservations against empanelled candidates or against the CM's remarks on shortlisted candidates, he can put forth his opinion on file, supported by reasons and relevant material, the SC order said. The order said that the chancellor shall give approval—except in case of a difference of opinion—within two weeks of receiving the file from the CM. "The department of higher education, Government of Kerala or any other department concerned of the state govt are hereby directed to notify the appointment within one week from the date of receipt of approval from the chancellor of the university," it said. Until now, the chancellor was the appointing authority and the order was issued from Raj Bhavan. "In cases where the CM has objected to the inclusion of any name in the panel and such objection is not acceptable to the chancellor or where the chancellor has an objection against the empanelment of any particular name for which he has assigned his own reasons, all such files shall be put up before this court. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now We make it clear that a final decision in this regard shall be taken by this court after giving a reasonable opportunity of being heard to objectors," said the SC bench. The apex court appointed former SC judge Sudhanshu Dhulia as chairperson of the search-cum-selection committee for both universities and ordered that he be paid an honorarium of Rs 3 lakh for every day of the committee's proceedings until completion. The state shall also provide him with a suitable office, full secretarial assistance, transit accommodation and reimburse his business-class air travel expenses.
