General Mills, Inc. (NYSE:GIS) is a global producer and distributor of well-known packaged food brands. Its wide-ranging product lineup includes cereals, yogurt, soups, meal kits, snack and nutrition bars, ice cream, frozen pizzas, pet food, and more.
Although founded in 1866, the company didn't fully pivot to consumer foods until 1995. Today, it's among the largest food manufacturers, with a market value exceeding $29 billion. The company's consistent investment in advertising and product development has helped it reach more than 95% of U.S. households and lead in several food categories.
General Mills, Inc. (NYSE:GIS) has shown resilience during economic downturns. For example, in 2010, it posted record results, including increased net sales, higher gross margins, growth in operating profit across segments, and strong cash flow.
A key factor in its stability is its reliable dividend. General Mills, Inc. (NYSE:GIS) has maintained consistent dividend payments for an impressive 126 consecutive years, even during some of the most difficult economic periods. This dividend stability comes from its stable cash position. In the first nine months of FY25, the company generated an operating cash flow of $2.3 billion, and it returned $1 billion to shareholders through dividends.
On top of that, General Mills, Inc. (NYSE:GIS) has a dividend yield of 4.5%, which analysts and investors view as particularly appealing within the packaged food industry.
While we acknowledge the potential of GIS as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some deeply undervalued dividend stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns, and doing so within a shorter time frame. If you are looking for a deeply undervalued dividend stock that is more promising than GIS but that trades at 10 times its earnings and grows its earnings at double digit rates annually, check out our report about the .

Assessor makes case for GIS overhaul in county

Last week, when dispatchers pulled up their computer system to dispatch for an emergency, they were left in the dark with no information. The culprit? A crash to Crawford County's geographic information services (GIS), which provides information to the computer-aided dispatch system. Although the GIS system, known as Esri, has been crashing at maximum capacity, assessor and GIS tech Janet Courson didn't know its immediate implications. 'I did not realize how important that was to them until last week when they didn't have it,' she said at a work session with the county commissioners on Wednesday. 'Initially we were going to say let's just let it fix itself over the weekend hopefully, and then they said, no we can't do that, it needs fixed now.' The assessment office made its plea on Wednesday to ratify a $39,000 contract with Civic Vanguard, a company that would fix the GIS issues. It would be paid for with the budgeted $35,000 for GIS and some wireless funding, according to Commissioner Eric Henry. Courson explained the proposal for Civic Vanguard has two parts. The first addresses the infrastructure of the current GIS system and its fragility. GIS is a computer-based system that works using layers. Currently, the county has so many layers that the system is at capacity and cannot intake any information, causing it to time out and create issues. Civic Vanguard would simplify data and increase capacity. 'The other thing that they need to address is the fact that Esri is ending the current system that sets up all of our web apps,' Courson said. 'So the property search, the zoning, the election districts, everything will go away as of the second quarter of 2026 unless we migrate everything over to the new software they're providing, and we need help doing that.' Civic Vanguard would work with the information technology department to redo the servers, ensuring a seamless GIS system that handles their current infrastructure and will suit future needs. Henry seemed optimistic about the vote to ratify the expense, which will take place at Wednesday's meeting. 'We don't want to hesitate and want to make sure that you have your tools,' Henry said. 'We appreciate all the work you're doing.' Commissioners also heard from the planning office about the Construction Industry Workforce Program, in which high school students receive training from local companies, including Ferguson Construction Company, Vogt Heating & Cooling, and MG Electric Services. 'The first year that we did the training program, we had nine participants, two were juniors,' said Zachary Norwood, county planning director. 'Of the seven that were seniors, we retained five with employers who are still here today, working with their employers. The next round, or this current year's round, we had six folks, all six signed, all six are rotating here.' Commissioners will vote on reimbursing the companies that participated for training wages from the Whole Home Repair Program fund. During comments, commissioners noted they were in the process of hand-counting 2 percent of the election votes, as required, to certify that results are accurate. Hand-counting votes is more time-intensive and leads to mistakes, so if anything, the process exemplifies the value of electronic voting equipment, commissioners said. The next meeting will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the commissioners conference room in the courthouse.

2 Recession-Proof Stocks to Buy and Hold

Even amid an uncertain economic environment, reliable companies can be found. Zoetis helps people care for pets, which many consider as honorary family members. HCA Healthcare offers services in high demand, regardless of economic conditions. 10 stocks we like better than Zoetis › President Trump's trade policies are sparking concerns about a potential recession. Though it's hard to predict an upcoming economic downturn, it's never a bad idea for investors to buy shares of companies that can perform relatively well even in bad times. These corporations often have robust underlying businesses built to deliver consistent results and superior returns over the long run. Here are two great examples for investors to consider: Zoetis (NYSE: ZTS) and HCA Healthcare (NYSE: HCA). Zoetis, a leading animal health company, has faced some challenges over the past year. The company's recent financial results weren't great, and it is dealing with increased competition for some of its growth drivers, including Apoquel, a medicine to treat allergic itch in dogs. However, as Zoetis points out, there is significant whitespace in this niche. It estimates that 13 million dogs are eligible for the medicine but aren't on any prescription, and another 7 million are undertreated. The company currently treats 12 million dogs with Apoquel and Cytopoint, a similar medicine. Although Zoetis markets products for livestock, poultry, and other animals, the company's work with pets, particularly cats and dogs, is one of the primary reasons it can survive a recession relatively unscathed. People view their pets as family members and are more than willing to pay a significant amount to ensure they are well cared for. The increased humanization of pets should also be a significant long-term growth driver for Zoetis, a trend that is particularly prevalent among younger generations, who are less likely to have children than older ones. It might be pushing it to say that pets are the new kids, but it's not too far from the truth for many pet owners. The rest of Zoetis' business grants it significant diversity. The animal health leader generally grows its revenue at rates faster than the industry average, something it has been able to do for a while, despite competition, through the continuous development of newer medicines. Two of its more recent important approvals, Solensia and Librela that treat osteoarthritis pain in cats and dogs, respectively, are becoming key growth drivers, too. So, despite being slightly in the red over the trailing-12-month period, Zoetis is well-equipped to handle a recession if one is coming, while delivering strong returns in the long run. Lastly, the stock is also an excellent pick for income seekers despite its unimpressive forward yield of 1.2%. Zoetis has increased its payouts by 502% in the past decade. Whether it's for dividends or growth, the healthcare specialist is a great option. HCA Healthcare's business remains in high demand even in recessions. The company is a leading hospital chain in the U.S., and even during economic downturns, people still require critical medical care. True, some procedures performed in the company's facilities are optional. Even for those that aren't, patients may sometimes postpone them when things get tough. So, there will be an impact on the company's results, but it should be fairly minimal. Over the past year, the company has faced another source of headwinds. Various natural disasters, including hurricanes, impacted its financial results in some areas, resulting in lower revenue than anticipated. Still, HCA Healthcare continues to deliver decent updates. In the first quarter, the company's revenue increased by a modest 5.7% year over year to $18.3 billion. Its earnings per share came in at $6.45, up 8.8% compared to the year-ago period. Despite this headwind, HCA Healthcare's long-term prospects are attractive. An aging population that will require more medical care should lead to increased spending on precisely the kinds of services it offers. HCA Healthcare has also deepened its relationships with physicians, patients, and third-party payers over time, partly through the adoption of more services. It would be challenging for any newcomer to seriously challenge HCA Healthcare, considering the ecosystem it has already built, which arguably grants it a network effect. Although there is competition, HCA Healthcare has generally increased its market share over the past decade. The stock should continue delivering superior returns long after the next recession hits, whenever that happens.
