CJ ENM, Amazon Prime sign deal to increase K-content access
CJ ENM and global streaming platform Amazon Prime Video have signed a deal to expand the global distribution network of Korean content at the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit, held on May 3, 2025.
The deal aims to enhance the reach of K-content by leveraging Amazon Prime Video's global subscriber base, which exceeds 200 million users.
Under this strategic collaboration, CJ ENM will use Amazon Prime Video as a major platform to accelerate content export.
The partnership shows Prime Video's commitment to globalizing Korean entertainment according to Kelly Day, vice president international at Prime Video.
She notes that Korean content continues to resonate strongly with global audiences, as evidenced by the success of shows such as "Marry My Husband" and "No Gain, No Love," which ranked among the top 10 most-watched non-English international originals of 2024.
According to Amazon India, Prime Video will launch a series of new exclusive titles from CJ ENM, Studio Dragon and CJ ENM STUDIOS throughout 2025 and 2026, starting with "Head Over Heels" in late June.
The platform will also add popular CJ ENM titles such as "Her Private Life," "Another Miss Oh," and "Mouse," expanding Korean content to over 240 countries, said Amazon India.
The new Korean releases will feature subtitles in 28 languages and dubbing in 11 languages, according to Amazon India.
The announcement of the multiyear collaboration is the highlight of the Buyer-Seller Bazaar, as the strategic partnership to distribute premium Korean content globally was unveiled, the Indian Embassy in Seoul told The Korea Herald, sharing a press release on Monday.
According to the Embassy, the summit featured 55 breakout sessions, which provided a platform for in-depth discussions on specialised themes such as broadcasting, digital media, streaming services, artificial intelligence, music, news, live events, animation, gaming, virtual production, comics, and filmmaking.
The interactive sessions were attended by Meta, Google, Amazon, X, Snap, Spotify, DNEG, Netflix and NVIDIA, along with representatives from industry bodies such as the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Confederation of Indian Industry, and Indian Music Industry, read the release.
India is emerging as a global hub for film production, digital content, gaming, fashion, music and live concerts and WAVES showcases the dawn of India's Orange Economy, according to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to the release, Kang Sung-kyu, managing director and CEO of the Busan Film Commission, attended the summit as a panelist.
Kang highlighted that while traditional film production is still recovering from the impacts of COVID-19, a transparent financial structure and support for cultural diversity are essential for maintaining the industry's momentum.

4 BTS members to complete military service next week
Four members of the K-pop supergroup BTS -- RM, V, Jimin and Jungkook -- will be discharged from their mandatory 18-month military service next week, the boy band's agency said Saturday. RM, the leader of the group, and V will complete their military service Tuesday, followed by Jimin and Jungkook the next day, according to BigHit Music. Political uncertainty falls below pre-martial law levels: BOK
The level of political uncertainty in South Korea has returned to levels seen prior to the martial law incident, following the recent presidential election, the central bank said Friday. According to data submitted by the Bank of Korea to Rep. Cha Gyu-geun of the Rebuilding Korea Party, the political uncertainty index stood at 1.5 as of June 4, the day after the election, in which Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung defeated conservative rival Kim Moon-soo. The index, which had been around 0.4 in early December, spiked to a record high of 12.8 in mid-December, following former President Yoon Suk Yeol's surprising declaration of martial law on Dec. 3. Though the index rose slightly above 1 after the election, the BOK noted that such minor fluctuations are common in normal times and should not be interpreted as meaningful. The index is compiled by the BOK's research department by tallying the number of media articles that include both the keywords "politics" and "uncertainty" in their headlines or main text. It reflects relative values, with the long-term average from the beginning of 2000 set at zero, the BOK said. The previous record high was 8.8, recorded on March 17, 2004, following the passage of the impeachment motion against the late former President Roh Moo-hyun. The economic uncertainty index also fell to 1.2 as of June 4, a level similar to the 1.1 recorded on Dec. 3. The index had surged to 5.4 on Jan. 2 but gradually declined, reaching as low as 0.5 on May 15, the BOK said. "The political uncertainty that has weighed on the economy over the past six months is expected to ease significantly," BOK Gov. Rhee Chang-yong said at a press briefing last week. "Political factors are no longer having a meaningful impact on the won-dollar exchange rate." The Korean won had weakened sharply earlier this year, nearing 1,500 won per US dollar, largely due to the domestic political turmoil and concerns over the sweeping tariff measures under US President Donald Trump's administration. But it rebounded to its strongest level in about seven months Thursday, closing at 1,358.4 won per dollar. (Yonhap)

Megan of Katseye comes out as bisexual
Megan becomes second member of Katseye to come out as LGBTQ+ after Lara Megan, a member of the global girl group Katseye, has publicly come out as bisexual. During a live broadcast on fan platform Weverse with fellow member Lara on Friday, Megan shared her identity with fans, stating, 'I'm coming out. I'm bisexual.' The two celebrated the moment together, jumping in place with joy. This marks the second coming out within the group. Back in March, Lara revealed her sexual orientation through a Weverse live broadcast.
