4 Bad Money Habits That Derail Your Finances

Many people struggle to gain control of their finances. If you're trying to get your money on track, but still feel like you're barely staying above water, it could be a sign that you're holding onto some bad habits. Financial recovery often starts with a closer look at how you're managing your money on a daily basis. From emotional spending to mismanaging credit, certain behaviors can sabotage even the most well-crafted financial plans.

GOBankingRates asked the experts to share the most common pitfalls they see in clients, and how these habits, if left unchecked, can lead to mounting debt, missed savings opportunities and long-term instability. If you're serious about rebuilding your financial foundation, you can start by breaking these four bad money habits.
Unchecked Spending Habits
'One of the most common disruptors I've seen in clients' financial plans is unchecked spending tendencies,' said Shirley Mueller, finance expert and founder of VA Loans Texas.
She said emotional spending, which includes buying things out of boredom, stress or peer influence, can quickly derail progress, even if the individual has the best intentions.
'Purchasing items outside of one's price range, whether it's a luxury car or an extravagant vacation, puts undue strain on finances and can lead to a cycle of debt,' she said. 'In my experience, those who fail to create and stick to a realistic budget are often surprised at how much small, unnecessary purchases add up over time.'
She noted that a lack of awareness about where money is going is the foundation of many financial setbacks. This habit will keep you from saving for a rainy day or funding your retirement savings account.
Kevin Shahnazari, founder and CEO of FinlyWealth, agreed. 'Making emotional purchases during stressful times derails budgets. I've seen customers rack up thousands in credit card debt during difficult life events.'
As a solution, Shahnazar suggested that 'creating a 24-hour rule for nonessential purchases helps prevent impulsive spending decisions.'

Along the same line as the above, Shahnazari explained that not tracking daily expenses can lead to financial blindness. The first step in a budget recovery is assessing when, where and how much of your money is leaving your bank account each day, week and month.
'Many of my clients don't realize they spend $15-$20 daily on coffee and lunch until we analyze their transaction data,' he explained. 'That daily coffee habit often amounts to $300-plus monthly that could go toward debt repayment or savings.'
Credit and Loan Mismanagement
Misusing credit cards and loans is another habit Mueller said frequently undermines financial improvement. One of the fastest ways to spiral into debt and out of financial stability is to take on debt with high interest rates without making the monthly payments in full and on time.
'Carrying high credit card balances not only increases interest payments but also harms credit utilization ratios, a key factor in maintaining a strong credit score,' she said. 'I've worked with individuals who only pay the minimum balance, unaware of how this practice causes debt to balloon over time.'
Additionally, she said not fully understanding loan terms — whether it's a high-interest payday loan or a car loan with hidden fees — leads to financial stress.
'It's necessary to treat credit as a tool, not an extension of income, and to approach all borrowing decisions with careful analysis and foresight,' she explained.
Shahnazari agreed. 'Treating credit cards like extra income creates a dangerous debt spiral,' he said. And Shahnazari has seen many bad credit habits firsthand.
'When I review customer data at FinlyWealth, I notice people often use credit cards to maintain lifestyles they can't afford. This habit typically leads to carrying balances and paying hundreds in interest charges monthly,' he said. 'The most dangerous financial habit I see is using credit cards as a lifestyle subsidy rather than a payment tool — it creates a false sense of affordability that inevitably leads to crushing debt.'
Prioritizing Spending Over Saving
According to Mueller, 'Lifestyle inflation, or increasing spending as income grows, is one of the stealthiest threats to financial stability.'
She's often seen clients achieve significant pay raises, only to find themselves in the same precarious financial situation due to upgraded homes, cars and lifestyle choices.
'Meanwhile, neglecting to save, whether for emergencies, retirement or specific goals, leaves people vulnerable to financial crises and unprepared for the future,' she explained. 'I always emphasize the importance of building a safety net before pursuing lifestyle upgrades.'
She said avoiding these habits and prioritizing consistent saving, mindful spending and responsible borrowing are essential to achieving lasting financial growth.
'Failing to build an emergency fund makes people vulnerable to debt,' Shahnazari said. 'Without savings, my customers often resort to high-interest credit cards or predatory loans when unexpected expenses arise. I recommend saving at least three months of living expenses, even if it means starting with just $50 per month.'

Intel stock surges on report Trump administration mulls taking stake in company

Shares of Intel (INTC) jumped more than 7% on Thursday following a report the US government is considering taking a stake in the struggling chipmaker. According to Bloomberg, the plan could see the government help Intel build out its planned chip complex in Ohio, which the company has had to delay as part of its ongoing turnaround effort. Intel announced the facility in 2022 with an initial investment of $20 billion that could grow to $100 billion over time. The report follows President Trump's meeting with Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan on Monday. The Ohio site was supposed to include two new manufacturing plants and start producing chips by 2025, but that's since been delayed into the 2030s. CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who took over when former CEO Pat Gelsinger was ousted by the company's board due to the slow turnaround in 2024, has since delayed the plant even further. The Trump administration is making a major push to reshore American chip manufacturing. Intel and rivals TSMC (TSM), Samsung, and others, have been working to build more chip fabricating plants in the US since the Biden administration signed the CHIPS Act in 2022. Part of Intel's plan under Gelsinger was to turn Intel into a contract chip manufacturer, similar to TSMC. But the gambit has run into trouble. So far, the foundry's main customer is still Intel, and the company is reportedly facing headwinds in getting its 18A chip technology up to the level needed to statisfy clients. Intel has signed agreements to build chips for Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT) using its chip designs. Trump initially called for Tan to resign as CEO of Intel due to his investments in Chinese tech firms, but backed away from the stance after meeting with him on Monday. Intel is still far away from making any meaningful headway in the AI space, ceding the market to both Nvidia and rival AMD. Earlier this week, the White House announced the US government will take a 15% cut of the sale of Nvidia and AMD chips shipped to China, an unconventional arrangement that highlights the government's increased focus on the semiconductor industry. Second quarter earnings season is winding down, and with most of the reports in, the results have been mostly positive. Over 90% of S&P 500 index companies have reported results, and as of Friday analysts expected S&P 500 companies to report an 11.8% jump in earnings per share during the second quarter. Companies had a lower expectation bar to clear coming into the quarter — analysts expected S&P 500 earnings to rise 5% in Q2, the slowest pace of earnings growth since Q4 2023 — amid President Trump's tariffs, stocks' lofty valuations, and uncertainty about the health of the US economy. Earnings this week include Applied Materials (AMAT), Circle (CRCL), Lenovo ( AMC (AMC), Cava (CAVA), Cisco (CSCO), CoreWeave (CRWV), Deere (DE), On (ONON), and Oklo (OKLO). Here are the latest updates from corporate America. Quantum Computing stock slips as losses accelerate Quantum Computing (QUBT) CEO Yuping Huang said that the company continued to make progress in growing commercial traction in the second quarter, but the industry is still focused on reaching technology milestones. Second quarter revenue totaled approximately $61,000, compared to $183,000 in the same period a year ago. The company reported a net loss of $36.5 million, or $0.26 per share. In Q2 2024, Quantum Computing posted a net loss of $5.2 million, or $0.06 per share. Quantum Computing stock fell 2.3% after hours in what's been a whipsaw year for quantum stocks. In June, the stock spiked 25% in one day after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said quantum computing "is reaching an inflection point." But the industry is still in its infancy. The other big quantum player, Rigetti Computing (RGTI), reported a technology breakthrough in its recent results but also big losses. "We are talking of a market that's hundreds of billions of dollars a decade or two from now," Rigetti CEO Subodh Kulkarni told Market Domination Overtime. "But right now, we are clearly in the R&D stage. We clearly need to perfect the technology to get to that big milestone in about four years, which we call quantum advantage." Applied Materials stock sinks as policy uncertainty weighs on Q4 guidance Applied Materials (AMAT) recorded an earnings beat for the July quarter but said that the "dynamic" policy environment is creating uncertainty for the business. That led the chip equipment maker to issue a revenue forecast of $6.7 billion for the fourth quarter, below what the Street was expecting. 'We are expecting a decline in revenue in the fourth quarter driven by both digestion of capacity in China and nonlinear demand from leading-edge customers given market concentration and fab timing,' CFO Brice Hill said. 'We are navigating and adapting to the near-term uncertainties by leveraging our robust supply chain, global manufacturing footprint and deep customer relationships.' The company, whose clients include Taiwan Semiconductor and Intel, posted record revenue of $7.30 billion in Q3, up 8% year over year, surpassing estimates for $7.2 billion. Earnings and revenue beats lift Dillard's stock Dillard's (DDS) stock rose 7% on Thursday after the department store chain reported revenue and profit beats for the quarter. Net income fell to $72.8 million compared to $74.5 million a year ago, but earnings per share rose $0.07 year over year after the Arkansas-based company bought back stock. Revenue of $1.53 billion beat Wall Street estimates of $1.52 billion, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Earnings per share of $4.66 also topped estimates of $4.00 per share. Total retail sales were flat, with strength in juniors' and children's apparel as well as ladies' accessories and lingerie. The weakest performing category was home and furniture. Other major retailers, including Walmart (WMT), Target (TGT), and Macy's (M), will report second quarter results in the coming weeks, providing a more in-depth look into consumer spending habits. Dillard's stock is up 23% year to date. It has climbed 78% since its April 8 low. Advance Auto Parts stock sinks 14% on gloomy financial outlook Advance Auto Parts (AAP) stock sank 14% on Thursday morning after issuing a downbeat profit forecast. The Raleigh, N.C.-based company beat Wall Street's earnings estimates but lowered its full-year earnings per share outlook to $1.20-$2.20 from its previous range of $1.50-$2.50. Advance Auto Parts attributed this change to a higher net interest expense related to its recent senior notes offering. In the earnings call, executives noted that approximately 40% of the company's cost of goods is exposed to tariffs at a blended rate of 30%. During the quarter, Advance Auto Parts saw lower transactions but higher tickets, as prices increased by 2%. The company noted that its competitors are also raising prices in a similar fashion. "If you look at the maybe lower to mid-income cohorts, they are more pressured than others right now," CFO Ryan Grimsland said about the price impacts of tariffs. "The wages aren't necessarily fully keeping up with some of the inflation that's in there. And so there are trade-offs that they're making. And we're still seeing that. It'd be interesting to see how that plays out in the back half of the year." China's tops quarterly revenue estimates on steady e-commerce demand Chinese e-commerce giant (JD) rose 1% in premarket trading after the company beat estimates for quarterly revenue on Thursday, highlighting robust shopping traffic. However, profits halved year over year. Total revenue rose 22.4% to 356.66 billion yuan ($49.73 billion) during the second quarter, above analysts' average estimate of 331.63 billion yuan. Profit fell by more than 50% to 6.2 billion yuan ($864 million) from 12.6 billion yuan a year earlier as the company invests in new businesses such as food delivery, competing with Meituan (MPNGY) and Alibaba (BABA). Deere's third-quarter profit falls, stock drops (Reuters) – Farm-equipment maker Deere & Co reported a lower third-quarter profit and tightened its annual profit forecast on Thursday, pressured by headwinds from U.S. tariffs and muted demand. ... Cisco forecasts higher-than-expected quarterly revenue on increased demand Cisco Systems (CSCO) reported adjusted earnings per share of $0.99 in the fiscal fourth quarter, barely beating estimates of $0.98. Revenue was $14.67 billion versus an estimate of $14.63 billion. Its fiscal first quarter forecast for revenue was also better than expected, as the AI boom boosted demand for networking equipment from cloud customers. However, Cisco stock fell 2% after hours. Reuters reports: Read more here Brinker International stock pops as Chili's drives earnings beat Brinker International (EAT) stock jumped 9% in premarket trading on Wednesday after the restaurant group reported earnings and revenue that topped estimates, powered by another quarter of strong sales at Chili's. The company reported net income of $107 million, or $2.49 per share on an adjusted basis, on revenue of $1.46 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter. During the same period last year, Brinker posted net income of $57.3 million ($1.24 per share) on $1.2 billion in revenue. The results were also better than Wall Street expected. Estimates going into the report were for adjusted diluted earnings per share of $2.47 and revenue of $1.44 billion. Chili's was the standout this quarter, with 23.7% sales growth and 16% traffic growth. Comparable sales at Maggiano's declined 0.4%. Cava stock plummets after company misses some of Wall Street's marks, cuts guidance Cava (CAVA) missed Wall Street's mark for revenue and same-store sales growth in its second quarterly earnings report. The company's revenue came in at $280.62 million, below the $285.56 million Wall Street expected, per Bloomberg consensus estimates. Adjusted earnings beat by $0.03, coming in at $0.16. Same-store sales came in lower than expected, up 2.1%, driven by menu prices and product mix. Meanwhile, guest foot traffic was flat, far less than the 6.14% jump expected by the Street. In the release, CEO Brett Schulman called it a "fluid macroeconomic environment," adding that it "continued to grow market share" during the quarter. For the full year, the company expects same-store sales growth of 4% to 6%, down from the previously expected range of 6% to 8%. The Toyota-backed (TM) company began mass production of its two robotaxi models in June and July, respectively. Robotaxi revenue also surged over 300% to $1.5 million in the quarter. "Since mass production started two months ago, over 200 Gen-7 Robotaxi vehicles have rolled off the production line, putting us firmly on track to hit the year-end 1,000-vehicle target," CEO James Peng said in a statement. Trading platform eToro beats profit estimates (Reuters) - Stock and crypto trading platform eToro beat Wall Street views for profit in the second quarter on Tuesday, as retail investors maintained a firm risk appetite despite broader macroeconomic uncertainty due to new tariffs. Shares of eToro rose in premarket trading after results. Retail trading activity has been strong this year, buoyed by gains in U.S. equity markets and renewed interest in high-risk assets such as cryptocurrencies and tech stocks. Read more here. On stock jumps on sales beat, CEO weighs in on tariffs Footwear company On Holding (ONON) stock gained 7% in early trading after beating second quarter sales estimates and raising its full-year sales guidance. The company reported a diluted loss per share of CHF 0.12, a loss of around $0.15. In 2025, net sales are expected to be up at least 31% year over year on a constant currency basis. "On has a very strong momentum across the world," CEO Martin Hoffmann told Yahoo Finance, "This is most visible in our growth of our DTC channel, which has seen 55% growth in the quarter." Investors were pleased with On's ability to mitigate the tariffs successfully on its key sourcing region, Vietnam. "Our industry has always been exposed to tariffs in the US," Hoffmann said. Green and Zimmer began serving as the chair and vice chair of Lyft's board in 2023 after stepping down as CEO and president, respectively, handing the reins to David Risher, who has been a board member since 2021. The duo founded Lyft in 2012, with the company now operating across four continents and nearly 1,000 cities. Sean Aggarwal, who was the chair of Lyft's board from 2019 to 2023, will reprise his role. Zimmer is launching a new consumer-focused business venture named YES&, while Green will continue as a venture partner at Autotech Ventures, a firm investing in the mobility and transportation sector.
