Trump asked Polish President Nawrocki to replace Tusk in Ukraine meeting
WARSAW, Aug 13 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump at the last minute requested MAGA-allied Polish President Karol Nawrocki join the Ukraine teleconference with European leaders on Wednesday, according to centrist Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Nawrocki's bitter political rival who had been expected to attend. Nawrocki, a conservative nationalist and eurosceptic, is an ally of Trump's right-wing populist MAGA political movement and visited the White House during Poland's presidential election campaign this year. He defeated the candidate of Tusk's pro-European, centrist party in June. "Just before midnight yesterday we received information, alongside our European partners, that the American side would prefer that Poland was represented by the president in contacts with President Trump," Tusk told a news conference. The White House did not comment whether the U.S. requested Nawrocki rather than Tusk take part in the call. A Polish government spokesperson said on Tuesday that Tusk, a former head of the European Council of leaders, would attend the call with Trump. But Nawrocki foreign policy adviser Marcin Przydacz told reporters he had "no information that Prime Minister Donald Tusk had previously planned to participate." He said Tusk's team showed it did not have good contacts with the Trump administration because it was under the impression Tusk would take part. Government spokesman Adam Szlapka said Tusk was representing Poland in two calls on Wednesday with European leaders but not Trump. Przydacz said the offices of the president and prime minister would exchange information about the meetings. European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy spoke to Trump ahead of the U.S. president's summit with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, stressing the need to protect Kyiv's interests. Krzysztof Izdebski, policy director at the Batory Foundation, said having two political opponents represent Poland created a risk of mixed messages. "This shows that, even in foreign policy, in such a key issue of security, we are simply hostage to internal politics and a certain competition between various state bodies," he said. He said this would undermine Poland's effort to present itself as a modern country working with leading nations on international political issues. Nawrocki and PiS are strong supporters of Ukraine in its war with invading Russian forces, as is Tusk and his government, but they differ on issues such as abortion, family values and the rule of law. Tusk said that he respected the U.S. request to keep contacts at the presidential level, but this should not be used to "play Poles against each other".

Anti-Trump internet star's attempt to debunk DC crime spiral ends in disaster
A viral internet account known for posting about Washington DC was ridiculed online after its attempt to prove ' crime isn't that bad' backfired massively. Washingtonian Problems, an anti-MAGA account that focuses on DC's issues, asked its followers to post positive traits about the ailing city to 'push back' against Trump. However, the account was quickly inundated with comments from locals that only served to prove that Trump 's law enforcement takeover is warranted. The X account wrote: 'Hey DC, let's push back against the negative narrative about our city. Share why you love our beautiful home and help show the world the real DC.' Testimonials came in thick and fast from people who had been the victims of serious crimes - who were happy that the National Guard are being deployed. 'I've been held up at gunpoint, had my car broken into 3 times, and had my bike stolen. My credit card has been skimmed too many times to count and I can't send my kids to public school here because they're a joke,' wrote Bret Manley, a children's book author based in the D.C. area. Multiple people wrote that they or people they knew have been robbed or mugged in front of police officers who declined to intervene. 'My car was broken into. One friend had a car stolen from in front of his place, another was carjacked at gun point. I've had to assist someone who was shot while I was just trying to drunkenly make my way home from a bar,' another person wrote. 'F*** you. Thank god for the new enforcement.' Pictured: The account, Washingtonian Problems, wrote this on Monday hoping to spread positivity about the nation's capital Grayson Quay, a conservative writer and former editor at The Daily Caller, wrote about a time he was assaulted on the Metro. 'It was really cool when a guy headbutted me on the metro after I asked him to stop blasting music through his phone speakers,' he wrote. 'And then there was the time a bum spat on me for no reason.' Tim Kennedy, a producer for outlet The Daily Signal, recalled a quadruple shooting at King Street Oyster Bar in August 2024 that killed two people. 'The D.C. chief of police blamed the restaurant for not properly locking up their patio at night,' Kennedy wrote. 'No, this actually happened.' The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) released a statement at the time saying that the restaurant, which was closed at the time of the shooting, failed to secure its patio and allowed people to gather. 'Without preventative measures, the open patio contributed to the group establishing themselves and continue to grow, leading to the gun violence that resulted in four people being shot, two of which are deceased, and significant property damage,' the department said in a statement. Other commenters talked about the mental toll of living in a city with high crime, including conservative political strategist Sarah Selip. 'As a woman #TheRealDC means carrying pepper spray day and night. Not wearing headphones after dark. Taking off your engagement ring when walking the dogs,' she wrote. The more constructive replies to Washingtonian Problems accused the account of being tone deaf and unwilling to acknowledge reality. 'It's a beautiful city but it's not negativity to admit that the crime is out of control,' one person wrote. The same day Washingtonian Problems made this post attempting to 'push back against the negative narrative about our city,' a man was shot to death in D.C.'s Logan Circle neighborhood. As of August 2025, violent crime has plummeted by 26 percent since last year, according to the MPD. Homicide is down 11 percent, while sex abuse offenses have been cut in half. However, there is potentially reason to doubt these statistics, since MPD placed 3rd District Commander Michael Pulliam on leave last month over accusations of manipulating crime data. D.C. Police Union Chairman Gregg Pemberton told NBC 4 he doesn't believe there has been as large of a crime drop as local officials have claimed. 'There's potentially a drop from where we were in 2023. I think that there's a possibility that crime has come down. But the department is reporting that in 2024, crime went down 35 percent -- violent crime – and another 25 percent through August of this year,' Pemberton said. 'That is preposterous to suggest that cumulatively we've seen 60-plus percent drops in violent crime from where we were in '23, because we're out on the street. We know the calls we're responding to,' he added. Since Trump took over the MPD and mobilized the National Guard, the White House claimed that more than 100 people have been arrested.

Laura Loomer sets her sights on her next target to get the boot from the Trump administration
After playing an outsized role in pushing out roughly a dozen Trump administration officials for supposedly showing insufficient allegiance to the president, far-right extremist and self-appointed MAGA 'loyalty' enforcer Laura Loomer is now setting her sights on a new target. In an interview with Politico Playbook this week, Loomer said she is taking aim at Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his senior counselor Stefanie Spear over concerns that Kennedy is eyeing a 2028 presidential run. Loomer, who says she is running a tipline to purge 'disloyal' members from the administration, told Politico that while she is realistic about the unlikeliness of her running Kennedy out of Washington, she does feel she can knock out some of his deputies – with Spear being front and center on her list. 'I'm not naive enough to think that the president is going to get rid of RFK, but I will say that … there are concerns about some of the staffing decisions over at HHS,' Loomer said. Spear, who served as the principal communications adviser on Kennedy's long-shot 2024 presidential campaign, is now one of his closest aides at HHS and apparently tightly controls access to the secretary. According to Politico, even before Loomer began targeting her, Spear had begun to run members of the Trump administration the wrong way and had 'been a thorn in their side for months,' with many expressing concern about her influence on Kennedy. However, for Loomer, the main issue is that Spear is apparently steering the 71-year-old MAHA leader towards another presidential run. 'I think that there's a clear intention by Stefanie Spear to utilize her position to try to lay the groundwork for a 2028 RFK presidential run,' Loomer claimed, adding that she knew this through 'sources in HHS.' While Spear did not respond to Politico's story, a senior HHS leader did not deny that Kennedy is indeed weighing a presidential bid. A Trump administration official also said they 'would not be surprised if [Kennedy is] thinking about' running again, even though they 'don't think anyone thinks it's a real threat.' With the 79-year-old president constitutionally ineligible to run in 2028, though he has repeatedly quipped about campaigning for a third term, Trump has suggested that Vice President JD Vance will be the MAGA movement's heir apparent – though he has yet to officially crown Vance as his successor. In response to Loomer's campaign against Spear and Kennedy, HHS acting chief of staff Matt Buckham said Kennedy and his staff 'are laser-focused on delivering President Trump's promise to Make America Healthy Again' while ignoring 'Beltway gossip' and political speculation. 'Secretary Kennedy and the entire HHS team are doing a terrific job as they deliver on President Trump's mandate to Make America Healthy Again,' a White House official told Politico. 'Scores of prominent restaurant chains and food brands dropping artificial ingredients from our food supply and historic reforms at the FDA to fast track lifesaving drugs and treatments prove that the entire HHS team is delivering for the American people.' Spear helped kickstart speculation about a Kennedy 2028 run last month when she joined an organizing call for MAHA supporters and influencers that Kennedy's super PAC co-hosted, Axios reported. Meanwhile, Kennedy has long been in Loomer's crosshairs. Despite his vaccine skepticism and embrace of conspiracy theories, which generally align with Loomer's worldview, she has labeled Kennedy a 'Marxist' and 'very problematic person.' Also, after Loomer successfully launched a campaign to oust FDA vaccine chief Vinay Prasad for being a 'progressive leftist saboteur' last month, the agency brought him back two weeks later as its top vaccine regulator. Besides taking issue with Spear supposedly prepping a Kennedy presidential run, Loomer is also lobbing allegations of disloyalty at the HHS aide. 'There's been some things that have happened,' Loomer cryptically said. 'There's been several things that have happened at HHS that are contradictory to the initial promises made.' Outside of her role as 'Trump's Rasputin,' which has prompted the president's inner circle to grow tired of her influence, the 'proud Islamophobe' has also been busy with her defamation lawsuit against HBO late-night host Bill Maher for joking that she 'might be' sleeping with Trump. In an off-the-rails deposition with HBO lawyer Katherine Bolger late last month, Loomer not only claimed that she lost out on a White House job because of Maher's quip but also repeatedly tried to avoid admitting that she made her own wild accusations about prominent figures. At one point, after Loomer refused to explain what she meant when she tweeted an especially gross allegation about Kamala Harris, Bolger apparently had enough. 'God, you're a coward,' the attorney said. 'You're a coward, you won't even admit to what you did.'
