Educate, organise and agitate should be our mantra, says Karnataka CM

The Hindu21-04-2025

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated the centenary celebrations of the All-Karnataka Yadav, Hanabar, Golla Sangha in Chikkodi on April 20.
He urged the community members to remain united at all costs, and to adopt the principles of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar — educate, orgainise and agitate for their rights — to ensure all-round development. In fact, this should be the mantra for all backward classes in India to escape exploitation, to strive towards a life of self-respect and growth, he said.
The lives of leaders like Dr. Ambedkar show us that education can eliminate slavery and lead a life of self-respect. It is heartening to know that the Sangha has completed a hundred years and has been instrumental in organising the society and bringing it into the mainstream. All castes have become known through their professions. Vested interests used such nomenclature to divide the society. The Golla community now has many sub-castes, including Golla caste, Kadu Golla, Adavi Golla. But all of them need to develop equally and at the same pace, he said.
'Dr. Ambedkar said that education is essential for the downtrodden, backward classes, minorities, and the underprivileged to move towards progress. He observed that there is debilitating inequality in society. The majority are deprived of literacy. By following the Manusmriti, the four-caste system of Brahmins, Vaishyas, Kshatriyas, and Shudras was introduced in society, and the Shudras were not given the opportunity for education. Only those classes who had opportunities got educated and achieved progress in society. Now that we live in a democratic welfare state, it is our responsibility to see that all communities get such opportunities and access to education, health and livelihood,' the CM said.
'Our government is striving to create an equal society. Since I took charge, I have been trying to provide equal opportunities to everyone. I have represented the economic progress of backward communities. Therefore, I am trying to ensure equal distribution of wealth for all,' he said.
The CM traced the history of reservation in Karnataka.
'In 1918, Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar formed the Miller Commission to provide representation to various communities in government jobs and education. 75% reservation was given to non-Brahmin communities in jobs and education. Later, many commissions were formed for reservation facilities. If one does not get education, slavery will increase and a life of self-respect will not be possible.'
Mr. Siddaramaiah shared his experience and explained to the audience the importance of education, saying that it was only because of education that he was able to become the Chief Minister of Karnataka.
The CM said he had received a memorandum from the community for the formation of a separate development corporation for the Yadav community. A decision will be taken after consulting community leaders, he said.

Bengaluru stampede: HD Kumaraswamy calls Siddaramaiah ‘Stairs CM', slams him for putting blame on police

Bengaluru: Union minister HD Kumaraswamy trained his guns on chief minister Siddaramaiah , dubbing him the "Stairs CM" (equating to the stairs in front of the secretariat) for his statement that the stampede incident did not occur in front of Vidhana Soudha and was unrelated to him. Kumaraswamy took to X on Monday and questioned whether Siddaramaiah is the chief minister of Karnataka or only for the Vidhana Soudha stairs. He asked how fair it was to wash his hands clean by skirting the blame entirely on police and why there was a desperate ploy to distract by targeting the opposition. Meanwhile, the KPCC criticised the social media campaign in support of the suspended Bengaluru city police commissioner B Dayananda. KPCC spokesperson Ramesh Babu said no one from Dayananda's community requested the CM to appoint him as the commissioner. It was the CM's call as part of his social commitment to taking all the communities together. "The opinion emerging after the suspensions is BJP-driven," he alleged. He questioned BJP for not appointing Dayananda as the commissioner during its tenure though he was eligible for the post. "BJP is playing politics in the name of caste," he claimed.

Chief Minister to inaugurate Kusum-C project on June 11

Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyaan (PM KUSUM)–C project, which will provide farmers with reliable daytime electricity by installing solar units near agricultural electricity feeders will be officially launched by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on June 11 at Gauribidanur of Chikkaballapura district, said Energy Minister K.J. George. Speaking at a curtain raiser press conference on Monday, he said, 'Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy and Consumer Affairs, Food and Ration Distribution Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Nayak, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Ministers Krishna Byre Gowda, M.C. Sudhakar, and others will be participated.' The KUSUM–C scheme aims to provide farmers with reliable daytime electricity by installing solar units near agricultural electricity feeders. These units will generate power locally, which will then be supplied to agricultural pump sets through the feeders. This localized generation ensures the delivery of high-quality power, the Minister noted. In Gauribidanur taluk's Thondebhavi Hobli, a 20 MW solar unit has been established across approximately 60 acres in the villages of Hanumenahalli and Charakamattenahalli. This is the largest solar installation under the KUSUM–C scheme in Karnataka to date, which is why Gauribidanur was chosen for the scheme's official launch. The land for the project has been leased from private owners for a period of 25 years, he added. Further the Minister stated that, the KUSUM–C scheme, introduced four to five years ago, was initially put on hold in the State. However, after our government came to power, we decided to implement the scheme and invited tenders. The central government provides a subsidy of ₹1.05 crore for generating 1 mw of solar power, which significantly reduces the cost of establishment of the Solar Power System for the RESCO developers. 'The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission has fixed a maximum rate of ₹3.17 per unit of electricity, ensuring affordable and reliable power supply for farmers. In the first phase of the scheme, we aim to generate 2,400 megawatts of solar electricity through the solarisation of agricultural feeders. This will provide quality daytime electricity to around 6,19,000 (6 lakh 19 thousand) agrarian pump sets, significantly reducing their energy costs and ensuring a reliable power supply,' he explained.

Zero Marks: Siddaramaiahs Rating For Modi Government

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday stated that he would give "zero marks" to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. Interacting with media at his residence in Mysuru, the Chief Minister, answering a question on the completion of 11 years in office by Prime Minister Modi, asserted that Prime Minister Modi survives on publicity. He questioned who benefited from demonetisation, and reminded reporters of the Prime Minister's promises of "Achhe Din" (good days are coming), providing two crore jobs every year, and resolving farmers' issues. He then asked why farmers agitated for a year if their problems were solved. The Chief Minister highlighted that Prime Minister Modi has not delivered on his major promises and "has merely completed eleven years in power". Siddaramaiah criticised the media for giving the Prime Minister excessive publicity, which he claimed helps spread false narratives. He pointed out that when the Karnataka government announced its guarantee schemes, critics claimed they couldn't be implemented and that the state would go bankrupt. Yet, these same schemes were later duplicated and implemented in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. He also questioned PM Modi's actions, contrasting them with his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, where he advocated for a 50 per cent tax share. Siddaramaiah stated that while Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced Rs 5,300 crore for the state, it was never provided. CM Siddaramaiah further added that despite the 15th Finance Commission recommending Rs 11,495 crore in funds to Karnataka, it was also withheld. He accused the BJP of spreading misinformation instead of questioning the injustice being done to Karnataka.
