HONG KONG, May 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Today marked the opening of the 2025 edition of Global Prosperity Summit (GPS2025), Hong Kong's first-ever conference designed to address the most important geopolitical issues facing the world. Following the success of last year's inaugural event, GPS2025 is reinforcing the city's position as a super-connector by bringing together renowned academic and international experts from across the globe to exchange views on subjects that are impacting global prosperity. The co-organisers said they are honoured that Mr Wu Hailong, President of The China Public Diplomacy Association, delivered the keynote address to kick off GPS2025.
Speaking during the keynote address, "China's Worldview", Mr Wu said:
"There are mainly four trends on the international landscape: the rise of China, the fault line in U.S.-West relations, the rise of the Global South and the shift of the world's centre of gravity to Asia."
"On Sino-US relations, China will continue to adhere to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation. At the same time, we hope the United States can recognise the broader trajectory of historical progress and view China's growth objectively."
"On Sino-EU relations, this year marks the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations. China retains its confidence in Europe and believes Europe can be a cooperation partner. The two sides have the capability and wisdom to address existing issues properly and pave the way together for another promising 50 years."
"Amid the current global transformation, a new force is emerging, and that is the Global South. Today, the Global South accounts for over 40 percent of global economic output and contributes 80 percent of global growth. It is a pivotal force in safeguarding peace, driving development and advancing global governance. It is reshaping the global political and economic landscapes while causing a historical shift in the global balance of power. A trend is taking shape with the 'rise of the South and decline of the North'. Increasingly, Global South countries are gaining voice and influence in international affairs."
"As long as we uphold the vision of a shared home, remain committed to building a community with a shared future for mankind and approach issues through equal-footed consultation and mutual accommodation, no problem is unsolvable."
Following the keynote address were three panel discussions: "The Promise of Space – Breakthroughs and Potential", "AI and the Future of Work", and "Trade War, Hot Wars and the Global Economy".
During the panel on trade war, speakers said they consider communications and cooperation to be important in managing the issue going forward. (Highlights of the panel discussions are enclosed in the Annex.)
Mrs Regina Ip, Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the Savantas Policy Institute, said, "Global Prosperity Summit is a joint effort by the government, think tanks and chambers of commerce to tell the true story of Hong Kong and help the world recognise the unique role Hong Kong can play in bridging divides and reducing differences."
In addition to the Savantas Policy Institute and Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, the European Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong has joined as a co-organiser this year. GPS2025 is being held from 19 May to 21 May 2025 at The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel Hong Kong. Participants include renowned scholars and experts from mainland China, Europe, North America and Asia, who have arrived in Hong Kong to exchange views and share suggestions on the critical issues that are affecting global development the most.
GPS2025 continues tomorrow with two more panel discussions, "Climate Change and Sustainable Development" and "Hong Kong's Bridging Role in a Changing World".

Dollar steadies as hot wholesale inflation data tempers rate cut fervour

By Jaspreet Kalra Singapore (Reuters) -The dollar held on to previous session gains on Friday after hotter than expected inflation data prompted traders to trim wagers on rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve. The euro and sterling were steady against the dollar after falling 0.5% and 0.3% on Thursday, respectively, while the Japanese yen rose 0.3% to 147.395 following stronger-than-expected GDP data for the second quarter. Overnight, markets had to contend with U.S. producer prices showing the quickest rise in three years in July amid a surge in the costs of goods and services, pointing to a broad pick up in inflationary pressures which analysts say could pose a dilemma for the Fed. The hot measure of producer price inflation followed a comforting consumer inflation outcome earlier in the week which had boosted expectations of policy easing in the world's largest economy and helped lift risk assets across the board. Odds of a 25-basis-point cut by the U.S. central bank retreated slightly after the producer price figures, per CME's FedWatch tool. A combination of supportive data and remarks from the U.S. Treasury Secretary had also given rise to the possibility of an outsized 50-basis-point rate cut in September but those expectations were wiped out entirely after Thursday's data. The wholesale U.S. inflation data "warranted a move in front-end rates and firmer dollar ... but a 25-basis-point cut at the Fed's September meeting remains the default setting," said Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone. The 2-year U.S. Treasury yield was steady in early Asia trading at 3.7262% after rising by as much as 5 basis points on Thursday. On the far end of the curve, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield was at 4.2849% after rising by a similar degree overnight. "The combination of elevated inflation and weak growth in jobs is a conundrum for the Fed," Joseph Carpuso, head of international economics at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, said in a note to clients. Carpuso expects Fed Chair Jerome Powell to address that dilemma at his upcoming speech next week at the Kansas City Fed's annual central banking conference in Jackson Hole. The remarks will be delivered amid the backdrop of data showing some impact of tariffs on U.S. inflation at a time when the job market is also slowing. "We're all waiting for something to give in terms of volatility," said Alex Hill, managing director at Electus Financial Ltd in Auckland. Hill expects "a slow deterioration in the U.S. data," citing weakening underlying trends in the labour market and the pickup in inflation. A key factor to watch for the greenback would be how the bond market digests increased amounts of government debt issuance in September and October, he said. More immediately, the focus will also be on a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin scheduled for Friday in Alaska. Trump said on Thursday that he believes Putin is ready to end his war in Ukraine, but peace would likely require at least a second meeting involving Ukraine's leader. Bitcoin and ether nudged up after dropping about 4% each on Thursday. Bitcoin had at one point touched a record high on Thursday on shifting Fed rate-cut expectations. China New-Home Prices Drop as Stimulus Fails to Halt Slide

China's new-home prices fell at a faster pace in July, in a further sign that a series of stimulus measures has failed to revive the moribund market. New-home prices in 70 cities, excluding state-subsidized housing, dropped 0.31% from June, the biggest decline in nine months, National Bureau of Statistics figures showed Friday. Resale home-value slump surprisingly narrowed to 0.55%, compared with 0.61% in June.
