Two more suspects have been nabbed in an ongoing corruption probe linked to the fraudulent issuing of South African passports at the Department of Home Affairs (DHA).
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has confirmed the arrest of two additional suspects after five suspects were initially arrested at the weekend in the Home Affairs-led law enforcement operation.
According to a media statement issued by the Hawks, the arrests of the two suspects were made on Monday as part of a larger investigation that began in September 2022.
The Hawks said the investigation was linked to the issuance of fraudulent passports to undocumented foreign nationals. The crimes reportedly took place between February 2020 and July 2023, at the DHA's Durban Commercial Street and uMngeni Road branches.
Preliminary investigations found that South African citizens were allegedly paid between R300 and R1 000 to enable foreign nationals to fraudulently acquire passports. The bribes were paid at various DHA offices including Isipingo, Durban Central and Eshowe.
It is alleged that a group of South African citizens collaborated with DHA officials to facilitate the illegal transactions.

'These unlawful activities took place outside of regular business hours, including evenings, weekends and public holidays, when the DHA offices were officially closed,' the Hawks statement added.
Since 2022, a total of 38 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, including seven DHA officials and 31 private citizens. Of those arrested, 'twenty-four individuals of whom four are DHA officials have been convicted and sentenced to a combined sentence of three hundred and ten years imprisonment.'
All seven suspects are expected to face charges of corruption, fraud, and violations of the Immigration and Identification Acts. They are scheduled to appear on Tuesday at the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.

Foreign couple arrested for forcing SA women into online porn

Authorities in Tshwane have arrested a Zimbabwean woman and her Nigerian husband for allegedly trafficking women and forcing them to perform in online porn. The Tshwane Metro Police Department's Tactical Response Team, working with the South African Police Service, carried out the arrests on Monday 16 June after receiving a tip-off. According to TMPD senior superintendent Isaac Mahamba, the officers traced the female suspect to a property in Gezina, Pretoria North. 'She was suspected of luring young women and coercing them into filming online pornography,' Mahamba said. Officers followed the woman to a second location in Pretoria North, where they found four women. Three were South African citizens and one a Malawian national, allegedly forced to perform online sex acts using recording equipment and large screens. The women, aged between 18 and 38, told officers the suspect was holding them against their will. They also said she had taken their identification documents. Police arrested the Zimbabwean woman on the scene. Further investigation led police to a separate address where they arrested her Nigerian husband. Both suspects face charges of human trafficking and forcing the production of online porn. Police have not ruled out further arrests as the investigation continues. 4 women freed in Tshwane human trafficking and online pornography bust, 2 arrested

Four women were rescued from the clutches of alleged human traffickers in the north of Pretoria this week. Pretoria Rekord reports that police conducted an operation on Monday after receiving a tip-off about a woman suspected of trafficking young women and coercing them into pornography, says Superintendent Isaac Mahamba, spokesperson for the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD). The operation, by the TMPD's Tactical Response Team in collaboration with SAPS, led to the arrest of two suspects for alleged human trafficking and online sexual exploitation. Mahamba says police successfully traced the suspect to a property in Gezina. The suspect then led the officers to another residence where the four victims were allegedly found producing online sexual content against their will. 'The suspect led the officers to a residence in Pretoria North where they discovered four female victims, aged between 18 and 38, actively engaged in online sexual performances using large screens and recording equipment.' Mahamba says the victims were three South African citizens and a Malawian national. 'During interviews, the women revealed that their IDs were being withheld by the female suspect, who claimed to be their employer.' The woman was immediately arrested, Mahamba says. Further investigation led officers to a separate address, where the suspect's husband, a Nigerian national, was arrested. 'Both suspects were formally charged with human trafficking and the forced production of online pornography, and they are detained at a local SAPS station. 'As the investigation progresses, additional charges may follow.' He says the TMPD remains committed to combating human trafficking and all forms of exploitation. 'The chief of police, Commissioner Yolanda Faro, commends all the members for their swift response and hard work,' he adds. Home Affairs scandal: Seven arrested amid backlog issues

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has landed in hot water following investigations. The Serious Corruption Investigation component of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation arrested two more suspects. Authorities arrested seven people during an ongoing operation in KwaZulu-Natal. The matter is regarding issuing fraudulent passports to undocumented foreign nationals. The DHA is allegedly involved in corruption, fraud, and contraventions of the Identification Act and Immigration Act. Police spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale, said preliminary investigations found citizens offered the DHA employees between R300 to R1000 in exchange for the unlawful services. He said the unlawful activities happened when the offices were closed. The crimes were prevalent at Home Affairs offices in Isipingo, Durban Central and Eshowe. The Serious Corruption Investigation is probing the matter. Meanwhile, seven of the accused appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes court. Philani Mmeli Zaca, Fumani 'Guru' Hlayisi, Zime Anita Shange, Bongiwe Kubheka, Thandiwe Pretty Khwela, Lungisani Siyanda Mzobe, and Lindokuhle Bongumusa Mpanza made their appearance. The court postponed the case to Friday, 20 June, for legal aid and a formal bail application. The court also remanded the accused in custody. National Prosecuting Authority Regional Spokesperson for KZN Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says the accused face numerous charges. They face charges of fraud, Contraventions of the Identification Act, 68 of 1997, diverse Contraventions of the Immigration Act, 13 of 2002 (as amended), and Corruption (accepting gratification). The arrests follow allegations that at least a quarter of a million people are still waiting Home Affairs to process their late birth registration applications. The Children's Institute has filed a court application with the Western Cape High Court. This seeks to compel the DHA to act on the backlog. The institute says the Home Affairs Department has affected the fundamental rights of children and their parents, and caregivers. As a result, it wants the court to order the DHA to develop a clear plan to deal with the backlog. HOW CAN THE DEPARTMENT OF HOME AFFAIRS RESTORE PUBLIC TRUST?
