1 killed after being struck by semi while changing tire on shoulder of I-80 in Poweshiek County
POWESHIEK COUNTY, Iowa — A North Carolina man was killed after he was struck by a semi while he was changing a tire on a semi-trailer on the shoulder of Interstate 80.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, at around 7 a.m. Thursday a semi hauling a section of a wind turbine eastbound on I-80 experienced a tire issue and pulled over near the 184-mile marker near Grinnell. The driver of the semi's pilot vehicle, identified as 55-year-old Brenton Fergia from North Carolina, also pulled over and parked his vehicle behind the semi-trailer.
The ISP said that Fergia got out of his vehicle and began to work on changing the semi's problem tire when another eastbound semi crashed into the pilot vehicle, which subsequently struck Fergia. According to a crash report, Fergia was transported to a hospital but later died from his injuries.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing, the ISP said.

Cocaine seized, man arrested after traffic stop
A Monday traffic stop led to the seizure of cocaine and the arrest of a local man. Lee County Sheriff's Office narcotics agents conducted a traffic stop in the 600 block of San-Lee Drive and a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of approximately 145 grams of crack cocaine, a release states. Raheem Tyvon Johnson, 30, of 624 Scott Ave., was arrested and charged with cocaine trafficking, five other drug-relates charges and driving with a revoked license. Johnson was held on a $250,000 secured bond. On Tuesday, June 17, Johnson posted bond by paying $12,500 with the help of two people whose names were illegible in eCourts. Johnson has numerous pending charges in other cases. He was charged with driving with a revoked license, failure to wear a seat belt and failure to secure a passenger under 16 in Harnett County on Nov. 13, 2022. He failed to appear in court five times in 2023 and 2024, but no arrest warrant was issued, according to eCourts. He faces a charge in Chatham County from June 5, 2024 for driving with a revoked license. He failed to appear in court on March 11. He faces charges in Harnett County from Feb. 17 for driving with a revoked license, no insurance, fictitious/altered tag, no registration and speeding. He failed to appear in court on April 9 and May 1. Johnson faces charges in Lee County stemming from March 17 for driving with a revoked license, speeding, no inspection, expired tag, no registration, no insurance and failure to stop at a stop sign/red light. He failed to appear in court on May 1 and 12.

Two women charged with financial fraud
In two unrelated cases, two area women are charged with felonies in relation to financial fraud. Peggy Riddle, 73, of 226 Charles Riddle Road, north of Sanford, was arrested Feb. 21 for allegedly exploiting the trust of an elderly or disabled person by obtaining $200,000 from Dorothy Hayes with intent to deprive. The offense allegedly occurred on Dec. 7, 2018, according to eCourts. Riddle was released on a $200,000 unsecured bond. Danielle Pickard Cockrum, 49, of 2099 Plainfield Church Road, northeast of Siler City, was charged with obtaining property by false pretense. The offense allegedly occurred Jan. 11, 2023. Cockrum was arrested June 6, 2023 and released on a promise to appear in court. She was indicted May 13, 2024 for allegedly opening an account with Dogwood State Bank and transferring $26,849 knowing that she did not have the funds. A Dogwood State Bank is located at 2222 Jefferson Davis Highway in Tramway. Both women have administrative hearings set for June 30 in Lee County Superior Court.
