Qualcomm to buy chip firm Alphawave for US$2.4 billion, targeting AI growth

Qualcomm has agreed to buy London-listed semiconductor company Alphawave IP Group for about US$2.4 billion in cash to expand its technology for artificial intelligence (AI)
The offer equates to about 183 pence per share for Alphawave, the companies said in a statement on Monday. That's a 96 per cent premium to the company's share price on March 31, the last trading day before Alphawave and Qualcomm disclosed the talks. The deal, which is still subject to regulatory and shareholder approval, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026.
Qualcomm chief executive officer Cristiano Amon is looking to lessen the company's reliance on the smartphone market, where growth has slowed, and push into new areas. Alphawave makes high-speed semiconductor and connectivity technology that can be used for data centres and AI applications, two growth areas in the chip industry that are being driven by demand for products like OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Alphawave's board has unanimously recommended the cash offer. Investors representing 75 per cent of shares must vote in favour of the deal for it to go through. Alphawave shareholders and directors representing about 50 per cent of shares have agreed to vote in favour of the deal, the company said.
Alphawave shares rose 23 per cent to 183.60 pence at 8.53am in London. The shares have risen about 117 per cent this year.
Alphawave, which held an initial public offering in 2021 at 410 pence per share, has consistently traded below that level. The company had struggled with a reliance on large customers and navigating geopolitical tensions between the US and China, where Alphawave decided to cut back its business last year.

US and China begin crunch trade talks in London amid simmering tensions

Top economic officials from China and the United States have kick-started a crucial round of trade talks in London, as the world watches closely to see if the two sides can agree to roll back their 'chokehold' controls over critical minerals and advanced technologies. The Chinese and American delegations – led by China's vice-premier, He Lifeng, alongside US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer – met Monday morning, local time, according to Xinhua. The meeting was scheduled after a phone call between President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump last week, during which the two leaders agreed to push forward negotiations to resolve their ongoing trade disputes. Since the deal in Geneva – which saw both sides agree to drastically scale back tariffs on each other's goods for 90 days – Washington has banned the use of advanced Chinese-made microchips and placed new restrictions on the sale of chip design technologies to China. US sales of some jet engine-related technologies to China have also been suspended, according to media reports.

Hong Kong backs start-ups at VivaTech in Paris amid push to promote city as ‘springboard'

Hong Kong is making its presence known at a major tech conference in Paris this week, as the city looks to forge closer business ties with Europe amid its efforts to become an innovation hub. The government-funded Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) will support 18 of its start-ups at the VivaTech trade show in Paris this week, aiming to find partnerships and investments, and to help their market expansion in Europe, HKSTP chief marketing officer Hilda Chan said in an interview last week. 'We want to showcase the diversity and the strength of our start-ups from Hong Kong to develop on a global stage,' Chan said. In total, the city will feature 20 local start-ups, including 18 from HKSTP and two from Cyberport, at the Hong Kong Tech Pavilion at VivaTech, which runs from June 11 to 14. The HKSTP delegation includes wearable start-up PointFit, which offers a sweat-sensing skin patch that monitors a person's fatigue level for fitness training purposes. The company, founded in Hong Kong in 2020, counts Hong Kong and Singapore as its biggest markets in Asia, but is aiming to find more clients in Europe, especially among sports teams, according to its co-founder and CEO Kenny Oktavious.
