No construction in 20-km radius of Noida airport without NOC

Indian Express4 days ago
No constructions or tree planting is allowed within a 20-km radius of the Noida International Airport (NIA) without a Height Clearance No Objection Certificate (NOC) received from the Airport Authority of India (AAI), the NIA has informed builders and local authorities on Friday.
In a statement, the Noida airport said that the directives have been issued based on rules laid down by the Ministry of Civil Aviation in 2015 and enforced under the Aircraft (Demolition of Obstructions caused by Buildings and Trees) Rules, 2023.
'It requires all stakeholders, including builders, landowners, and government bodies, to obtain a Height No Objection Certificate from the AAI before initiating any vertical development within the prescribed limit,' read the statement.
'No construction activity, erection of structures, or tree plantation is permitted without a valid Height Clearance NOC from AAI,' Noida airport's chief operating officer (COO) Kiran Jain said in the statement.
'This is not merely a procedural requirement but a critical safeguard for aircraft operations and navigation systems,' she added.
She further said that any kind of unauthorised construction or vegetation growth within the restricted airspace could breach Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS), posing threat to flight safety and air traffic control systems. 'The enforcement framework includes legal provisions for demolition and penalties.'
Jain said that all concerned parties must approach local bodies before initiating any vertical development within the 20-km perimeter. These bodies will consult the Colour-Coded Zoning Map (CCZM) issued by AAI to assess permissible height limits. Based on the proposed construction height, the applicant may be directed to apply for a Height NOC via AAI's NOCAS portal.
Officials said the safety and efficiency of aircraft operations take precedence as NIA prepares to become a major aviation hub for the National Capital Region. 'Stakeholders are strongly advised to halt any unapproved development activities in the safeguarded zone immediately… Timely compliance is essential to avoid legal consequences and ensure smooth commissioning of the airport,' Jain said.
Earlier this week, The Indian Express had reported that over 90% of the work at the airport has been completed, and the remaining tasks will likely be completed by September 30.

Gold imports in June fall to two-year low as record price dents demand

India's gold imports in June fell 40 per cent from a year ago to their lowest level in more than two years, as a price rally to a record high sapped demand, a government and two industry officials told Reuters. Imports to India, the world's second-largest gold consumer, fell to 21 tons, the lowest since April 2023, said a government official, who declined to be named as he was not authorised to talk to the media. In value terms, gold imports fell to $1.84 billion in June from $2.48 billion a year ago, the official said. In the past decade, on average, India imported 52.4 tons of gold in June. In the first half of 2025, India's gold imports fell 30 per cent from a year ago to 204.1 tons, the lowest since the first half of 2020, when the Covid-19 outbreak led to lockdown, the trade ministry data showed. The rapid surge in prices has been discouraging retail buyers from making jewellery purchases, said Ashok Jain, proprietor of Mumbai-based gold wholesaler Chenaji Narsinghji. Domestic prices hit an all-time high of 101,078 rupees per 10 grams in June. Gold prices have risen 27 per cent so far this year after rising 21 per cent in 2024. Gold imports would remain subdued even in July, as demand is still tepid because of higher prices, Jain said. Silver imports in June nearly doubled from a year ago to 197 tons, but were significantly lower than the 544 tons imported in May, the government official said. In recent months, Indian investors, traditionally obsessed with stockpiling gold, are increasingly turning to silver, as its returns this year outpaced those of gold.

Jane Street deposits ₹4,843 cr ‘unlawful gains'. But its path back to trading is not easy

Jane Street has met a key requirement to resume operations in Indian markets by depositing over ₹4,843 crore to comply with the regulator's interim order against alleged market manipulation. Yet, the firm's immediate return to trading isn't certain amid multiple regulatory hurdles and unprecedented scrutiny. The quantitative trading firm has fulfilled the primary condition outlined in paragraph 62.1 of the Securities and Exchange Board of India's (Sebi's) interim order, directing it to deposit 'unlawful gains" from alleged index manipulation in an escrow account with a lien marked in Sebi's favour. 'As per the order's own terms, specifically clause 62.11, this action should pave the way for the temporary ban on their market access to be lifted," said Abhiraj Arora, partner at Saraf & Partners. However, he cautioned, 'The investigation is still ongoing, and Sebi has put specific, forward-looking restrictions in place." Read more: Jane Street hires Khaitan in index manipulation case Jane Street will continue to contest the regulator's order, according to a person familiar with the matter. Jane Street and Sebi did not respond to Mint's emailed queries till press time. Clause 62.11 explicitly states that the directions stipulated in the interim order under paragraphs 62.2 to 62.10, which include the ban on trading, shall 'cease to apply upon compliance with directions in clause 62.1". This means that once the escrow deposit is verified, the trading ban imposed restraining Jane Street Group from accessing the securities market should automatically be lifted. 'Typically, the exchanges make a press release informing about the compliance of the Sebi directions with regard to the deposit of unlawful gains, and subsequently, the ban is lifted," said Akshaya Bhansali, partner at Mindspright Legal. 'The whole process is completed in a day so that the entity does not suffer from its continuing ban post-compliance." Citing the interim order, Asish Philip, partner at LKS law firm, 'on payment of deposit, all other restrictions will be waived". Jane Street 'requested for relaxation of conditions and Sebi is examining the same", he said. However, Rohit Jain, managing partner at Singhania & Co., said, 'Lifting of the trading restrictions was automatic but not instantaneous. Sebi must first verify and confirm the compliance." The regulator certifies this compliance and communicates it to stock exchanges and intermediaries, who then restore market access for Jane Street, according to Jain. 'There is no fixed timeline prescribed, but this process typically takes a few days to weeks, depending on administrative and verification procedures." Read more: Jane Street's troubles may have only just begun. Sebi is now checking Sensex options. Moreover, according to Jain, the deposit only serves as a safeguard so the suspected funds don't leave the Indian jurisdiction or get dissipated while the investigation continues. Scrutiny persists The quant firm will continue to be under scrutiny. The Sebi order includes clause 62.13, which directs stock exchanges to monitor future dealings and positions of JS Group on an ongoing basis to ensure that these entities do not directly or indirectly indulge in manipulative activity. Such directions 'are one of a kind and not a general practice by Sebi", calling it a departure from standard regulatory protocol, according to Bhansali. Arora said the specific instruction to the stock exchanges to 'closely monitor" Jane Street is a 'heightened supervisory measure. This isn't just business-as-usual monitoring; it's a clear signal that the regulator remains deeply concerned and has put the entity on a short leash." Since it was an interim measure and not a final verdict, the order preserves Sebi's right to continue its investigation and take further action, he said. Special treatment Bhansali said Sebi appears to be giving special treatment to the matter. Trading restrictions and de-freezing of the bank accounts, in compliance with Sebi's own interim order, would have been listed automatically once Jane Street complied with the deposit of the 'unlawful gain", she said. 'However, the Sebi press release states that the request of Jane Street to lift the restrictions is under examination. This is not in line with the direction in the ex-parte ad-interim order," Bhansali said. 'Any delay in lifting the restrictions by Sebi will give an upper hand to Jane Street and will make it difficult for Sebi to answer before the Securities Appellate Tribunal." Work set to begin on 1.7-km underground leg of Yellow Line

1 2 Kolkata: The second phase of the underground Yellow Line beyond the airport to Birati is set to begin with the engineering firm—which built the underground packages for the East-West Metro—securing a Rs 1,330-crore contract. ITD Cementation's job includes construction of twin tunnels, each 1.7 km long, the underground Birati station and subways for Birati and Michael Nagar stations on this stretch of the 11.2-km Noapara-Barasat Metro corridor. The Yellow Line's first phase— the 7-km section from Noapara to Jai Hind (airport) stations—is complete and ready for safety inspections by the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS), which grants the approval for revenue operations. For the second phase, ITD Cementation recently emerged as the lowest bidder for the civil construction contract. The bid was invited weeks after the Airports Authority of India (AAI) allowed the use of 18-m-tall cranes for the work on the airport-New Barrackpore stretch. "The contractor (ITD Cementation) will be responsible for the construction of 3.5-km Metro tunnels (1.7 km each), the underground Birati station and subway work for Birati and Michael Nagar stations," a Metro official said. The tunnel next to the airport's wall will be built, using the RCC box pushing method (without the deployment of tunnel boring machines), as specified by the AAI, while the Birati station will be constructed using the cut-and-cover method. The cut-and-cover method is a shallow, tunnelling technique, in which a trench is excavated, the tunnel structure is built, and the trench is then covered and restored to the original surface. The method is used when the tunnel's depth is relatively shallow and the surface disruption is acceptable. "The contractor will also be responsible for the architectural finishing, firefighting, water supply, sanitary installation, power supply system and aluminium third rail among other facilities," a Metro official said. "We hope the rest of the Yellow Line issues will be resolved and funds will flow accordingly."
