India bans imports of certain jute, other items from Bangladesh through land routes
The goods under these curbs include jute products, flax tow and waste, jute and other bast fibres, jute, single flax yarn, single yarn of jute, multiple folded, woven fabrics or flex, and unbleached woven fabrics of jute.
However, imports are allowed only through Nhava Sheva seaport in Maharashtra, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification.
New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI) India on Friday banned imports of certain jute products and woven fabrics from Bangladesh through all land routes amid strained relations between the two countries.
Such port restrictions will not apply to Bangladeshi goods transiting through India to Nepal and Bhutan, it added.
It further said re-exports of these products from Bangladesh to India through Nepal and Bhutan will not be allowed.
'Import from Bangladesh shall not be allowed from any land port on the India-Bangladesh border. However, it is allowed only through Nhava Sheva seaport,' the DGFT said, adding that 'imports of certain goods from Bangladesh to India are regulated with immediate effect'.
Earlier in April and May, India announced similar curbs on imports from Bangladesh.
On May 17, India imposed port restrictions on the import of certain goods like readymade garments and processed food items, from the neighbouring country.
On April 9, India withdrew the transhipment facility it had granted to Bangladesh for exporting various items to the Middle East, Europe and various other countries except Nepal and Bhutan.
These measures were announced against the backdrop of the controversial statements made by the head of Bangladesh's interim government Muhammad Yunus in China.
The comments did not go down well in New Delhi. It also drew sharp reactions from political leaders in India across party lines.
India-Bangladesh relations have nosedived dramatically after Yunus failed to contain attacks on minorities, especially Hindus.
Bangladesh is a big competitor of India in the textile sector. The India-Bangladesh trade stood at USD 12.9 billion in 2023-24.
In 2024-25, India's exports stood at USD 11.46 billion, while imports were USD 2 billion.
Bangladesh's perceived growing proximity with Pakistan and China and the implications of India's strained ties with its eastern neighbour were also discussed at a parliamentary committee meeting on Friday, according to sources. PTI RR CS BAL BAL

Hindu Woman Allegedly Raped In Bangladesh's Comilla, BNP Leader Arrested Amid Protests

A 27-year-old Hindu woman was allegedly raped at her residence at a village of Muradnagar upazila in Bangladesh's Comilla district on Saturday night, sparking protests by students of Dhaka University. The incident took place on June 26 and came to light after a video of the naked woman being brutally assaulted and pleading with her attackers went viral on social media. Police have arrested five individuals, including Fazor Ali, 36, a local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader, in connection with the incident. According to Bangladesh's New Age outlet, Ali forcibly entered the house of the victim at around 11 pm and raped the woman before locals intervened and thrashed him, but Ali managed to flee. Muradnagar police station officer-in-charge Jahidur Rahman said the woman was the mother of two children and belonged to the Hindu community. 'On June 26, Fazor Ali (36), father – Shahid Mia, of Ramchadrapur Panchkitta village under Muradnagar police station of Comilla district, was detained and beaten by the people of the area on charges of raping the wife of an expatriate from the same village," Police said in a statement. Awami League supporters claimed a Hindu woman was gang-raped by BNP members. Students of Dhaka University took to the streets in the early hours of Sunday, demanding justice for the victim and asking the administration why she was assaulted. Police arrested Fazor Ali in Dhaka's Saydabad area at approximately 5 am on Sunday, and also arrested other individuals for allegedly circulating the video on social media. Signature Global to invest ₹2,200 cr on new housing project in Gurugram
New Delhi, Jun 29 (PTI) Realty firm Signature Global will invest around ₹ 2,200 crore to develop a new housing project in Gurugram to expand business and achieve over 20 per cent growth in its pre-sales this fiscal year. Signature Global said on June 30 that it has sold premium flats worth more than ₹ 2700 crore in its new project in Gurugram on the back of strong housing demand (Representational Image)(File Photo ) The company has recently launched a premium residential project, 'Cloverdale', comprising 770 apartments, on Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), Sector 71, Gurugram. Signature Global emerged as the fifth largest listed real estate developer last fiscal in terms of sales bookings by achieving record pre-sales of ₹ 10,290 crore. The Gurugram-based company has given a guidance of posting ₹ 12,500 crore worth pre-sales in the current fiscal. "We have launched a new housing project in Gurugram. Housing demand continues to be strong in this city, especially for reputed builders," Signature Global Chairman Pradeep Kumar Aggarwal told PTI. The company is selling homes in a price range of ₹ 4 crore to ₹ 7 crore in this project, which is spread over 8 acres and is part of an overall 22-acre development. We will be investing around ₹ 1,200-1,500 crore on the acquisition of land parcels," he had said. Aggarwal said the investment in construction activities would be around ₹ 2,500 crore in 2025-26 against ₹ 1,900 crore in the preceding fiscal. Last week, Signature Global announced plans to raise ₹ 875 crore through issue of non-convertible debentures to refinance debt and expand business. "We have taken the approval of board to raise funds. We will also seek shareholders approvals," Aggarwal said. He said the company will use ₹ 450 crore to refinance its existing debt while the remaining amount will be for business growth. Aggarwal said the company is targeting to raise funds by end of August, subject to shareholders' approval. Its total income grew to ₹ 2,637.99 crore in the last fiscal from ₹ 1,324.55 crore in 2023-24. Since inception, Signature Global has delivered 13.5 million square feet of housing projects and has a strong pipeline of about 21.6 million sq ft of saleable area in upcoming projects, along with 46.38 million sq ft of ongoing projects, targeted for completion within the next 2-3 years.
