Health ministry to roll out free measles-rubella jabs for children

(File pic) PUTRAJAYA: The health ministry will roll out a free nationwide Measles‑Rubella Supplementary Immunisation Activity from Aug 4 to Oct 12 for children aged six months to 59 months. The ministry said the campaign targets children born between Aug 1, 2020, and Jan 31, 2025, aiming to strengthen the existing immunisation programme by boosting and restoring herd immunity. The programme also supports the national goal of eliminating measles by 2030, with the primary objective of raising immunisation coverage and providing early protection to prevent wider transmission, it said in a statement. Measles and rubella are highly contagious and can lead to serious complications, including ear infections, pneumonia, encephalitis, seizures, and in some cases, death. The ministry said both diseases are preventable through the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine. Under the national immunisation programme, the MMR vaccine is administered at nine and 12 months, while Sabah administers an extra measles dose at six months. 'Overall, Malaysia's immunisation coverage has exceeded 95% annually, including in 2024. However, only 62% of districts achieved MMR coverage above 95% in 2024,' the ministry said. It said a minimum of 95% coverage is crucial to achieve herd immunity and control the spread of the disease. Official data showed measles cases nearly doubled in 2024, with 3,791 cases recorded compared to 2,002 in 2023. The number of outbreaks rose to 231, from 112 the previous year. Of the reported cases, 44.1% involved children under five years old, while 28.9% were non-citizens, of whom 84.3% had never been vaccinated. Three measles-related deaths were recorded last year, all involving unvaccinated non‑citizen children aged eight months, three years, and 17 years. The ministry urged parents and guardians to promptly bring eligible children for the free supplementary measles‑rubella (MR) vaccination. One of the standout experiences at the event was the 'Jantungku' Walkthrough Exhibit, a multi-sensory journey through the cardiovascular system, which captured the attention of attendees, both young and old, and served as a powerful reminder of how everyday lifestyle choices directly impact long-term well-being. The festival also featured health-themed game stations and hands-on activities for parents and children, while shoppers explored the Vibrant Health Marketplace. Government mulls raising tobacco tax: Anwar

PUTRAJAYA: The government is considering a proposal to raise the tobacco tax rate, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Thursday. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the proposal aligns with the government's commitment to public health and fiscal reform, particularly given the long-standing moratorium on tobacco tax hikes. The country has no formal mechanism for periodic adjustments or revaluation of the rate, which was last increased in September 2014. NCDs, commonly associated with unhealthy lifestyles, include heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer. Anwar said healthcare remains a key government priority, noting that the public system is under growing strain from medical inflation, the dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases, and an ageing population. KPWKM's Mental Health Screening Booth At PMR Kelantan Draws Crowd
KOTA BHARU, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- A brief and interactive stress-level screening service offered at the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) booth at the MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 Kelantan has caught the attention of many visitors. This initiative provides the public an opportunity to assess their mental health status through a simple and quick questionnaire, thereby promoting early awareness of healthy emotional management. Yusra Nayli Mat Yunus, a counsellor with KPWKM's National Welfare Foundation, said nearly 100 visitors had undergone the screening by noon today, representing diverse segments of the community. She said the screening serves as an initial step to gauge individual stress levels, but for accurate results, participants must answer the questions honestly. 'Each screening session is followed by counselling services, which not only benefit the individuals involved but also signal a positive trend in growing public awareness of mental health,' she said. 'I encourage everyone to take advantage of this screening as a first step in safeguarding emotional and mental well-being,' she told Bernama at Stadium Sultan Muhammad IV here, where the programme is being held. Meanwhile, visitor Ahmad Khirul Che Sadom, 32, said the user-friendly and informal approach was highly effective, especially in encouraging the public to begin taking mental health seriously. 'Most people are reluctant to attend formal counselling sessions unless they are already under serious stress. So this kind of early screening is very helpful – it's easily accessible and not intimidating,' he said. He also praised the referral system in place, whereby individuals found to have moderate to severe stress levels are immediately referred to on-site counsellors at the booth.
