Madhya Pradesh Police form SIT to investigate alleged ‘love jihad' cases
State minister Vishwas Sarang said that 'no such case will be tolerated, and the strictest action will be taken'.
'Love jihad' is a Hindutva conspiracy theory that accuses Muslim men of being part of an organised plot to trick unsuspecting Hindu women into romantic relationships to ultimately convert them to Islam. The Union home ministry has told Parliament that Indian law has no provision defining such a term.

The state government's decision to set up a special investigation team comes in the backdrop of a case in Bhopal in which three female students alleged that they were raped and blackmailed with videos of the sexual assault in April.
According to the police, the complainants said that the persons accused in the matter had raped them after hiding their religious identities.
The case sparked protests in Bhopal by Hindutva groups, who claimed that the crime was an instance of 'love jihad", PTI reported.
In the context of this case, the Madhya Pradesh Police headquarters said that it had intelligence inputs that girls and women from socially-vulnerable backgrounds had been 'systematically targeted through tactics such as romantic entrapment, deception, threats or other inducements, leading to their mental, physical and social exploitation,' The Indian Express reported.
The police claimed that girls and women were being coerced into converting their religion through fear, pressure or deceit. 'Such incidents are not only criminal in nature, but also pose a serious challenge to the dignity, freedom and social harmony of women,' The Indian Express quoted the police as saying.
The special investigation team has been tasked with identifying and investigating incidents of alleged forced conversion, tracing the individuals and groups who may be involved and ensuring strict action against the accused persons.
The team will also investigate interstate or international networks allegedly involved in forced religious conversion, and will recommend preventive measures.
The Bhopal (Rural) inspector general of police will head the special investigation team, The Indian Express reported. The team will also include officials such as the additional commissioner of police (crime and headquarters), the assistant inspector general of police, women safety branch, and the superintendent of police, state cyber cell.

Ratcheting up pressure on India, another Trump administration official has criticised the country for its ties with Russia. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC in an interview that 'Indian arbitrage of Russian oil is unacceptable,' underlining Washington's stand that New Delhi was fuelling Moscow's 'war machine,' Reuters reported. 'This … Indian arbitrage – buying cheap Russian oil, reselling it as product has just sprung during the war – which is unacceptable,' he said. The US earlier this month slapped 50 per cent tariffs on India, half of them for buying Russian oil, catapulting the country to one facing the highest import duties among Washington's trade partners. New Delhi called the tariff action 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable', and said it would take 'all actions necessary' to 'protect its national interests'. India is the world's third-largest consumer of crude oil and meets 88 per cent of its oil demand from imports. Before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Moscow's share in New Delhi's oil imports was less than 2 per cent. That has now risen to nearly 40 per cent. Higher tariff revenue to be used to pay down federal debt Bessent said that he expected a substantial increase in tariff revenues from the $300 billion he forecast earlier this year, with the money to be used to start paying down the US federal debt, Reuters reported. He declined to give a specific new revenue forecast, but said he and President Donald Trump were 'laser-focused' on paying down the debt. 'I've been saying that tariff revenue could be $300 billion this year. I'm going to have to revise that up substantially,' he said. India should start 'acting' like strategic partner: Trump aide Bessent's comments came close on the heels of White House trade advisor Peter Navarro saying that India needed to start acting like a strategic partner of the US if it wanted to be treated like one. 'India acts as a global clearinghouse for Russian oil, converting embargoed crude into high-value exports while giving Moscow the dollars it needs,' he wrote. Navarro also claimed in an opinion piece in the Financial Times that India was 'now cozying up to both Russia and China'. Navarro wrote: 'Here's how the India-Russia oil mathematics works. American consumers buy Indian goods. India uses those dollars to buy discounted Russian crude. That Russian crude is refined and resold around the world by Indian profiteers in league with silent Russian partners — while Russia pockets hard currency to fund its war machine in Ukraine. As Russia continues to hammer Ukraine, helped by India's financial support, American (and European) taxpayers are then forced to spend tens of billions more to help Ukraine's defence.'

Dharmasthala's Veerendra Heggade rejects allegations, supports SIT probe into Soujanya case: Report
Veerendra Heggade, the Dharmadhikari of the Dharmasthala Manjunatha Swamy Temple, has firmly denied recent allegations linking the temple and its trust to the 2012 rape and murder of 17-year-old Soujanya, as well as to broader claims of multiple crimes allegedly covered up over the past two decades. He has welcomed the state government's decision to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to get to the bottom of the issue. He said the portrayal of Dharmasthala in social media has been misleading and unfair. 'We welcomed the SIT the same day. It's good that the state has formed it and once and for all the truth should come out. It's not good that allegations are made and they remain that way,' he said. He expressed concern about what he called a 14-year-long smear campaign aimed at tarnishing the image of Dharmasthala and its charitable institutions. Heggade alleged that some groups, upset with the positive work done by the temple trust, were behind the misinformation. He pointed out that deaths in the area are always recorded by local authorities and carried out with proper procedure. Heggade also criticized the influence of social media, suggesting it is being used to turn young minds against faith. Addressing persistent rumours involving his family, Heggade clarified that when the Soujanya incident occurred, they immediately informed the authorities and cooperated fully with earlier investigations, including by the CBI. Allegations that family members were involved, he said, are baseless - some of the accused relatives weren't even in the country at the time, and documents have been submitted to prove it. 'Our family owns very little personally. Everything is transparently managed by the trust, and there is documentation for all acquisitions,' he added. He further explained the distribution of responsibilities within the family: one brother oversees educational institutions in Bengaluru, another manages temple affairs and social work, and a third is involved in university administration. The institutions, he said, are all officially registered under the trust's name. When asked about a Jain family managing a Hindu temple, Heggade dismissed the controversy, pointing out that several temples in India are maintained by Jains and follow proper rituals. He also denied that the controversy had become politicized. "Congress leaders have also come here and so do the JDS leaders. Some people want to defame the temple and all parties have come in support of the temple," Heggade said, welcoming Deputy CM DK Shivakumar's remarks suggesting there could be a conspiracy at play. Heggade also appreciated Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's neutral stance that any wrongdoing would be investigated and the guilty punished. Despite the storm, Heggade maintained that faith in Dharmasthala remains strong and that public turnout has not declined. 'We carry out the puja, rituals as usual and there is no change in the crowd or customs,' he stated.
