A moment to relish: Unpacking a historic day at the Wienie 500

INDIANAPOLIS — The Oscar Mayer Wienie 500 was more than a race; it was a chance for one of the six Wienermobiles to earn the title of "Top Dog."
Three rows of two Wienermobiles lined up at the iconic "Yard of Bricks" at the most famous racecourse in the world, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, during Friday's Carb Day for the 109th Indianapolis 500.
The New York Dog team was co-driven by Sarah Kraut on the outside of the front row. Chi Dog started on the pole.
"We were born ready for this day," said "Corndog Kate," who was one of the two "hot-doggers" driving the Chi Dog Wienermobile.
Slaw Dog started on the inside of Row 2 alongside Sonoran Dog on the outside. Row 3 included Chili Dog on the outside with Seattle Dog on the inside of the third row.
Each of these teams were hoping to win the "Borg-Weiner Trophy."

The race began with the traditional singing of the Oscar Mayer song, "I wish I were an Oscar Mayer Weiner," sung by "Lucky Dog."
Each Wienermobile was equipped with a six-speed transmission, making shifting important around the flat, 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval.
Granny Smith gave the command, "Wienies, start your engines." A few moments later, the green flag waved, but the pole-winning Wienermobile had a dog of a start. That allowed New York Dog to get a great jump at the lead and the Wieners rolled into Turn 1.
New York Dog held the edge before Chicago Dog got a great run out of Turn 2. It was able to "ketchup" to the lead and take over the top dog position.
It was, frankly, a great move.
New York Dog and Seattle Dog tried to "ketchup" at the Yard of Bricks to complete the first lap and begin the final lap of this bun-to-bun contest.
Slaw Dog overcooked its engine as smoke began to come out of the grill. It dropped to the rear of the field as this cooker was out of gas.
Chi Dog continued to have the lead coming out of Turn 4 before Slaw Dog made a tremendous run down the backstretch to win by a "Wienie" at the start finish line to go down in Indy history as the "Top Dog."
Just like one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball, the Chicago White Sox, Chi Dog couldn't hold onto a lead.
Victory slipped through the buns for Chi Dog as Slaw Dog had the right topping in a battle as hot as a charcoal grill.
"People remember where they were when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon," former IndyCar Series driver and FOX Sports analyst James Hinchcliffe said. "Today, people are going to remember who won the inaugural Wienie 500.
Slaw Dog took a victory lap around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, cheered by fans in mustard-stained shirts.
Afterwards, the winning team was awarded with the "Borg-Wiener Trophy" and presented with a "Wienie Wreath."
This was truly a moment to relish.

"A fat bitch," I announced, licking the juice of a wood-grilled lamb sausage from my fingers, "is never an easy whelper." I was reading from the breeding section of a book called The Golden Retriever: 47Exciting Full-Color Photos. Sky King listened intently but said nothing, and not simply because he had not yet learned to talk. I have found that young males of all species have a limited attention span when it comes to discussions of whelping and obesity. But, as always, Sky King's gaze was eloquent—as it had been earlier that evening when I dumped a plastic cupful of upscale dry dog-food pellets into his bowl and turned away to take care of my own dinner, a half-dozen fat little sausages crackling over a smoldering fire of oak and mesquite on the grill just outside the kitchen door. "I know that you are a fair-minded human," he seemed to be saying, "and that you have only my best interests at heart. But are you absolutely sure that I should be eating this pile of dead and desiccated pellets while you experience the feral delights of sizzling flesh? Who's the carnivore here anyway?" I glanced back at Sky as if to say, "Cats are carnivores, dogs are not." But I had gotten his message. Dogs did not evolve eating dry dog food, and they do not prefer it now. Apart from the caution concerning obese females, its culinary advice was sketchy: Dry dog food is the easiest, served four times a day and moistened with hot water for the youngest puppies, less of- ten and with less water as the puppy matures, and dry as a bone for adults. (The reasons: nutritional balance, total convenience, and minuscule stools.) This was the advice we had followed thus far with Sky King, whom my wife had named after a popular serial hero of radio and black-and-white TV in the forties and fifties, a fictional and fearless rancher-pilot who performed daring rescue and law-enforcement missions in his small private propeller plane. "Out of the clear blue of the Western sky comes Skyyyy Kiiiing!" each episode began. Kate probably expected a little mischief when she got a Goldendoodle puppy. But alas, her new dog is definitely a 'menace to society' and now she has people cracking up online. There are things about puppyhood that they don't warn you about. And this was one of them! All Kate wanted to do was clean up after her kids took a bath, but boy did she get a surprise instead. You could tell the dog was up to no good even before the woman turned into the bathroom. 'This dog is an absolute menace to society,' the woman said in the footage. Poor Kate hadn't drained her kids' bathtub yet and the Goldendoodle took advantage of it. She'd made her own personal splash pad in the bathroom! Which was fun for her but was probably not exactly thrilling for Kate.'What are you doing?' the woman asked from behind the camera. 'Oh, just playing around in the tub. Do you want to join?' we can imagine the pup saying. 'Are you living your best life?' the woman teased. Yep, you could certainly say that for sure. 'Oh Stormi Jean, you're such a goober,' she kidded. The comments section absolutely loved Kate's little troublemaker Goldendoodle. What a little sneak! 'Once she realized she wasn't in trouble she went for it!' joked one person. 'I love that you're letting it enjoy the moment,' someone else praised. 'God forbid a girl wants to practice her spelling whilst getting clean,' joked a third person. 'Where did you get a self washing dog? They got that on Amazon?' kidded another commenter. Do Dogs Like Baths? You may have noticed that some dogs love their tub time (or maybe they just like making a mess!), but some dogs really don't like taking baths. Even dogs that like other bodies of water might not love baths. It really depends on the dog and the breed. Some dogs might even get totally spooked from the bath!
