5 mouthwatering moments from the Wienie 500
The inaugural Wienie 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was one for the history books. It had all the ingredients of an iconic race: fast cars, dramatic twists, mechanical difficulties and, of course, hot dogs. While the race was jam-packed with fun from the start all the way through to the photo-finish, here were the five best moments from the Wienie 500: 5. The Oscar Meyer Anthem "We ask that you rise and place your hand over your stomach," the crowd was advised over the Speedway speakers, "and feel free to sing along as he performs the Oscar Meyer Wienie Song." The crowd happily obliged as the singer belted out the famous tune, with Friday's hot-doggers looking on from behind him with pride. The audience is just as much a part of the fun as the race itself, and the Wienie 500 fans did not disappoint. But one fan stole the show: Granny Smith, who had the best sign of the day and was chosen to be the honorary engine-starter. "Wienies, start your engines," she proclaimed — and the crowd, naturally, went wild. What is a race without a few unexpected hiccups? After starting the race strong, the Sonoran Dog Wienermobile started overheating and was passed by not one, but two of the Wienermobiles trailing it. "That is an over-grilled dog!" Will Buxton said on the broadcast. Indeed, it was. 2. Sonoran Dog strikes back Down but not out, the Sonoran Dog Wienermobile came back with a vengeance at the first turn, passing Chi Dog to take a commanding lead. A historic race deserves a historic finish, and it got the one it deserved. Despite trailing by the length of two whole Wienermobiles, Slaw Dog made a late push to take the lead and never looked back. Chi Dog was left in the dust for the second time in the race, and Slaw Dog went home with the trophy, a moment the team is sure to relish forever. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? A moment to relish: Unpacking a historic day at the Wienie 500
Bruce Martin Special to INDIANAPOLIS — The Oscar Mayer Wienie 500 was more than a race; it was a chance for one of the six Wienermobiles to earn the title of "Top Dog." Three rows of two Wienermobiles lined up at the iconic "Yard of Bricks" at the most famous racecourse in the world, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, during Friday's Carb Day for the 109th Indianapolis 500. The New York Dog team was co-driven by Sarah Kraut on the outside of the front row. Chi Dog started on the pole. "We were born ready for this day," said "Corndog Kate," who was one of the two "hot-doggers" driving the Chi Dog Wienermobile. Slaw Dog started on the inside of Row 2 alongside Sonoran Dog on the outside. Row 3 included Chili Dog on the outside with Seattle Dog on the inside of the third row. Each of these teams were hoping to win the "Borg-Weiner Trophy." [Wienie 500 highlights: Slaw Dog wins it with photo-finish over Chi Dog] The race began with the traditional singing of the Oscar Mayer song, "I wish I were an Oscar Mayer Weiner," sung by "Lucky Dog." Each Wienermobile was equipped with a six-speed transmission, making shifting important around the flat, 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. Granny Smith gave the command, "Wienies, start your engines." A few moments later, the green flag waved, but the pole-winning Wienermobile had a dog of a start. That allowed New York Dog to get a great jump at the lead and the Wieners rolled into Turn 1. New York Dog held the edge before Chicago Dog got a great run out of Turn 2. It was able to "ketchup" to the lead and take over the top dog position. It was, frankly, a great move. New York Dog and Seattle Dog tried to "ketchup" at the Yard of Bricks to complete the first lap and begin the final lap of this bun-to-bun contest. Slaw Dog overcooked its engine as smoke began to come out of the grill. It dropped to the rear of the field as this cooker was out of gas. Chi Dog continued to have the lead coming out of Turn 4 before Slaw Dog made a tremendous run down the backstretch to win by a "Wienie" at the start finish line to go down in Indy history as the "Top Dog." Just like one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball, the Chicago White Sox, Chi Dog couldn't hold onto a lead. Victory slipped through the buns for Chi Dog as Slaw Dog had the right topping in a battle as hot as a charcoal grill. "People remember where they were when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon," former IndyCar Series driver and FOX Sports analyst James Hinchcliffe said. "Today, people are going to remember who won the inaugural Wienie 500. Slaw Dog took a victory lap around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, cheered by fans in mustard-stained shirts. Afterwards, the winning team was awarded with the "Borg-Wiener Trophy" and presented with a "Wienie Wreath." This was truly a moment to relish. Oscar Mayer's Wienermobiles plan race ahead of Indy 500

Dive Brief: Oscar Mayer will pit all six of its Wienermobiles against one another in a race on May 23 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in advance of the Indianapolis 500, per details shared with Marketing Dive. The Wienie 500 will be streamed live on the Fox Sports App and across @IndyCarOnFox social accounts. A partnership with DraftKings will enable fans to enter a pool to win $10,000 by predicting the race's outcome and answering related questions. The race kicks off a new campaign, 'Summer of Wieners,' with more elements to come this summer. The stunt looks to tie the Kraft Heinz brand to a sporting event that helps mark the start of summer. Dive Insight: The Wienie 500 will take place two days before the Indianapolis 500, a race where fans consume nearly 30,000 hot dogs, per press materials, and is intended to mark the official kick-off of summer. The partnership speaks to growing importance of marketing around live sports, including motor sports, as a way to engage with ad-wary consumers. Advertisement 'As a brand known for sparking smiles in disarmingly delightful ways, it's only fitting that we bring a race of epic proportions to the Speedway and celebrate a timeless tradition: delicious meats and a little friendly competition to kick off a summer of wieners,' said Kelsey Rice, brand communications director at Oscar Mayer, in a statement. The event also represents the first time all six of the brand's hot-dog-shaped vehicles will be in the same place at the same time in over a decade and will be the first competitive race for the fleet. Each of the six vehicles will be decorated to represent a different regional area of the country, including Chi Dog (Midwest), New York Dog (East), Sonoran Dog (Southwest), Slaw Dog (Southeast), Chili Dog (South) and Seattle Dog (Northwest). The drivers (a.k.a. 'hotdoggers') will also be equipped with custom racing suits and the winner will be treated to a trophy ceremony in the 'Wiener's Circle' complete with a spray of mustard instead of champagne. The Wienie 500 is part of a partnership between Oscar Mayer and Indianapolis Motor Speedway that names the brand the official hot dog' of both the speedway and the Indianapolis 500. The effort is a partnership led by Johannes Leonardo, with content and social by The Kitchen, paid media by Carat and public relations by Zeno. Advertisement The race is the latest in a string of promotional stunts from the company involving its iconic vehicle. Past activations have included turning the hot-dog-and-bun-shaped vehicle into an ersatz wedding chapel, briefly rebranding it as the 'Frankmobile' to promote a line of all-beef frankfurters and using the vehicles as mobile billboards to draw attention to gender disparity in Hollywood during the Oscars. Parent company Kraft Heinz has put Oscar Mayer on an internal platform that looks to balance performance and profitability. The brand achieved a 10% increase in gross profit dollars in 2024, CEO Carlos Abrams-Rivera said at the Consumer Analyst Group of New York Conference in February.
