"PM Modi's target of net zero by 2070 needs to achieved by collective efforts of all": CM Yogi Adityanath

India Gazette22-05-2025
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 22 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday inaugurated the National Seminar-2025 on 'Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development'.
The CM stated that the task of achieving the country's goal of net zero by 2070 could not just be fulfilled at the government level but required the collective efforts of everyone.
'Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured the world that India will achieve the target of net zero by 2070. But the task of achieving this target is not just at the government level but through the collective efforts of all of us... Today, a national seminar has also been organised here regarding this program, after which the vision is how we can create harmony with nature and ensure sustainable development...' Yogi said addressing the people.
Meanwhile, earlier today, the CM directed officials of concerned districts to carry out relief work with full promptness in view of storms, rain, and hailstorms, as per a release.
The CM has stated that officials should visit the affected areas, conduct surveys, and closely monitor the relief efforts.
In cases of loss of human or animal life due to lightning, storms, or rain-related disasters, immediate distribution of relief funds should be ensured to the affected families. Proper medical treatment should be provided to the injured.
Instructions have also been sent to officials to assess crop damage through surveys and send reports to the government so that further action can be taken. He further directed that in case of waterlogging, proper arrangements for drainage should be made on a priority basis.
Earlier on May 21, Yogi Adityanath reviewed the current status of COVID-19 in Uttar Pradesh in light of the emerging global and national concerns surrounding the latest JN.1 subvariant.
The Chief Minister reassured the public that there is no immediate cause for concern in the state; however, he emphasised that, given the global context, vigilance and precaution remain essential.
According to the official release, Chief Minister Adityanath noted that the Central government has issued no new advisory regarding COVID-19. Still, considering the rising number of JN.1 cases in Thailand, Singapore, and Hong Kong, he stressed the need for continued surveillance in Uttar Pradesh. He instructed all medical colleges, district hospitals, and health units across the state to remain on high alert and be fully prepared to handle any potential emergency. (ANI)

MEA rejects Nepal's claims over Lipulekh after India, China restart trade through border points

India on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) rejected Nepal's objection to resumption of India-China border trade through the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, stating that Kathmandu's arguments are not based on 'historical facts'. 'Our position in this regard has been consistent and clear. Border trade between India and China through Lipulekh Pass had commenced in 1954 and has been going on for decades. This trade had been disrupted in recent years due to COVID and other developments, and both sides have now agreed to resume it,' said Randhir Jaiswal, Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs. 'As regards territorial claims, our position remains that such claims are neither justified nor based on historical facts and evidence. Any unilateral artificial enlargement of territorial claims is untenable,' he said. 'India remains open to constructive interaction with Nepal on resolving agreed outstanding boundary issues through dialogue and diplomacy,' Mr. Jaiswal added. Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday objected to the resumption of border trade between India and China that was announced during the India visit of Wang Yi, China's Foreign Minister on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). The development acquires diplomatic significance as Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri earlier this week (August 17-18, 2025) visited Nepal and invited Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli to visit India in September . 'The Nepalese government is clear that the official map of Nepal has been included in the constitution of Nepal and that the map shows Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani east of the Mahakali River as integral parts of Nepal,' said the press statement from MoFA of Nepal after India in a bid to improve ties with China announced that border trade with China would resume through Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh, and Nathu La Pass in Sikkim.

Rajya Sabha passes IIM Amendment Bill 2025 amid Opposition walkout

New Delhi, Aug 20 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha today passed the IIM (Amendment) Bill, 2025 by voice vote amid a walkout by the Opposition. The bill pertains to the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam. With this, the bill has received the approval of both Houses of Parliament, as the Lok Sabha had already passed it earlier. The Opposition staged a walkout over their demand for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, which was not accepted. Due to the uproar by the Opposition, the House was adjourned twice. When proceedings resumed at 2 PM, presiding Deputy Chairman Bhubaneswar Kalita called upon Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to introduce and move the bill for discussion and passage. As soon as Pradhan stood up to speak, Opposition members began demanding a discussion on the electoral roll issue and started raising slogans near the Chair. Kalita allowed Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge to speak, but when Kharge attempted to raise the electoral roll issue, the Chair disallowed it, stating that no discussion on matters other than the bill would be permitted. In protest, the Opposition members raised slogans and walked out of the House. Following a brief discussion and the Minister's reply, the bill was passed by voice vote. Some amendments to the bill had been proposed by Opposition members, but due to their absence from the House, these could not be moved. The bill provides for the establishment of an IIM in Guwahati. Until the first Board of Governors is formed, the institute will be run by a person appointed by the central government. The estimated cost for this institute is Rs 5,500 crore. The bill also includes amendments to the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017, declaring IIMs as institutions of national importance and providing for regulation of their functioning. Responding to the discussion, Pradhan said the bill fulfils a long-standing demand of Assam and that academic sessions would begin from this term itself. He added that student admissions and faculty recruitment would be done accordingly. He noted that this would be the 22nd IIM in the country, with a total cost of Rs 555 crore. Pradhan highlighted that India has become the world's fourth-largest economy and is on its way to becoming the third largest, attributing this progress to the skills of its youth and the contribution of national institutions. He accused previous governments of neglecting the Northeast. He said that while only 13 IIMs were established in the first 53 years since the inception of IIMs in 1961, the number has increased to 22 in the last 11 years under the Narendra Modi government. The Education Minister also mentioned that the UAE had requested India to establish IITs and IIMs there, in recognition of their achievements. As a result, such institutes have now been established in Abu Dhabi and Africa. Earlier, BJP's Geeta alias Chandraprabha initiated the discussion by saying that the pace of opening educational institutions has doubled since the Modi government came to power. She claimed that two new colleges and one new ITI are being opened every day in the country. YSRCP's Golla Babu Rao demanded that vacant faculty positions at the Visakhapatnam IIM be filled. Biju Janata Dal's Niranjan Bishi supported the bill and also raised the issue of filling vacancies in these institutions. AIADMK's M. Thambidurai raised the issue of student suicides in management institutes. NCP's Praful Patel welcomed the move to open an IIM in Assam and supported the bill. BSP's Ramji raised the issue of SC/ST students not receiving their PhD fellowships on time. He demanded that 50 percent of seats at the new institute be reserved for students from the Northeast. BJP's Kanad Purkayastha called the bill historic for the Northeast, stating that the people of Assam have been deprived of premier institutions for decades. UNI RBE SS
