Train firing case: Trial resumes against sacked RPF constable after five months

Mumbai, Aug 4 (PTI) After a five-month gap, the trial against sacked RPF constable Chetansinh Chaudhary, accused of shooting dead four people on a moving express train in 2023, recommenced on Monday, with a sessions court deeming the accused mentally fit.
Chaudhary had earlier claimed that he was mentally unfit to stand trial.
The sessions court on Monday resumed trial with the deposition of the sixth witness, a former RPF head constable, in the case.
On July 31, 2023, Chaudhary allegedly shot dead four persons — three passengers and one of his senior colleagues, an RPF Assistant Sub-Inspector, Tikaram Meena — on the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express near Palghar station in Maharashtra.
Eyewitness and dismissed RPF head constable Narendra Parmar (60) told the court that one of the victims, Asghar Shaikh, pleaded for mercy with Chaudhary moments before he was shot twice in the chest in S6 compartment of the Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express in 2023.
'Shaikh said Mai aam mulazim hoon. Main bhi bhagwan ko manta hoon'¦ Bhagwan and Allah ek hai'¦" (I am just an ordinary employee. I also believe in God. God and Allah are one)", Parmar said.
Parmar was dismissed along with RPF constable Amey Acharya for failure to discharge their duties.
Parmar told the court that Chaudhary was visibly stressed.
He wanted to stop Chaudhary but feared that the attempt to restrain him could result in more passengers getting shot.
Chaudhary has been charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 302 (murder), 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc) and others, as well as relevant provisions of the Railways Act. PTI SP NSK

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Allegations of atrocities towards PTI supporters Zufiqar Bukhari, an adviser to Khan, condemned the Punjab government's response to the planned protests, alleging that authorities have already begun targeting PTI workers. 'Fearing protest by PTI, the Punjab Government has started arresting party workers, descending into madness by barging into their residences last night, without warrant or providing any arrestable offence,' Bukhari stated. He noted that arrests have occurred in Lahore and Rawalpindi, though he did not provide specific numbers. Bukhari criticised the preemptive crackdown, saying, 'Their crime? Dare to state a protest, which is yet to happen. That's not lawful, that's tyranny.' The Express Tribune reported that the PTI, under the TTAP banner, is preparing to launch a significant protest movement. At an emergency press conference on Sunday at the PTI District Secretariat in Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), TTAP Secretary General Asad Qaiser outlined the plans. 'On August 5, a nationwide protest will be held under the flags of Pakistan, the PTI, and the white flag of peace,' Qaiser announced, stressing that the protests would remain peaceful and within the bounds of Pakistan's constitution and laws. Qaiser highlighted the significance of the date, marking two years since Khan's 'illegal' arrest, and called for transparent legal proceedings. 'If there is any evidence against Khan, then it should be presented in an open court,' he urged. He praised Khan as a transformative leader, stating, 'Imran Khan is the most popular and dignified leader of this nation, who not only elevated Pakistan's image internationally but also gave the nation a vision.' Qaiser added that Khan's detention represents a 'direct attack on democracy, the Constitution, and the rule of law.' PTI planning district-level protests Rather than organising a centralised rally in Islamabad, the PTI has opted for district-level protests across the country, following Khan's instructions. In Peshawar and Khyber districts, a rally led by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur will commence at 3:30 pm from Hayatabad Toll Plaza on Ring Road and proceed to Qila Bala Hisar. In Swabi, protesters will gather at the Ambar Interchange for a day-long demonstration starting at 3:30 pm and continuing until Isha (evening) prayers. In Nowshera, a protest is planned at Khairabad, also beginning at 3:30 pm. From August 2, 2024, to date, at least 637 individuals, including 41 police officers, were lynched in acts of vigilante justice as Yunus presented a reformist face to the world. On August 5, 2024 — exactly a year ago — the streets of Dhaka witnessed a chaotic scene as Bangladesh navigated a tumultuous period. There were traffic snarls, blockades, high-decibel honkings, student volunteers taking over the streets, and scattered remains of human bodies punished for their affiliation with Sheikh Hasina's Awami League. Eyewitnesses recounted that some people were so brutally attacked that their faces were indistinguishable. Hasina managed to escape to Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad, near New Delhi, leaving Bangladesh in disarray, soon to be taken over by Nobel Laureate Md Yunus. Despite Yunus's international image as an inclusive liberal change-maker, attacks on Hindus continued unabated, and their places of worship were desecrated in Bangladesh with impunity. This article, however, is not focused on the minorities of Bangladesh. The political transition following the August 2024 uprising, which forced then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from office after 15 years in power, has seen a disturbing escalation in mob violence in Bangladesh. From August 2, 2024, to date, at least 637 individuals, including 41 police officers, were lynched in acts of vigilante justice as Muhammad Yunus presented a reformist face to the world. This number is likely to rise, as the data collected is up to July 2025. It marks one of the deadliest waves of extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh's recent history. At The Zabeer Jashore Hotel in Jashore, 24 people were burnt to death on August 4 last year — a day before Hasina fled for her life. Among the 637 deaths, a staggering 182 people were burnt in the Gaji Tyres area of Rupganj in Narayanganj on August 25 last year, when the sense of retribution was still high. Canada's Global Centre for Democratic Governance painstakingly created a list of 637 victims and shared it with News18 in India, indicating a breakdown in law and order. 'With police forces overstretched, court systems paralysed, and local leaders either targeted or in hiding, citizens increasingly took justice into their own hands. Public spaces, once protected by law, have become flashpoints for mob killings, often triggered by nothing more than suspicion, rumour, or political resentment," said GCDG to News18. Local human rights organisations reported that over 70 per cent of lynching victims since August 2024 had ties to the former ruling Bangladesh Awami League or its affiliated student and labour wings. Minorities — Hindus and Ahmadiyas — were also common targets of mob lynchings. One of the most horrific incidents involved the public lynching of Lal Chand Sohag, a Hindu social worker, outside Mitford Hospital on July 9 this year. His death was, believe it or not, live-streamed across platforms. In the age of smartphones, rumours travel faster than facts. Misinformation and inflammatory content have played key roles in mobilising mobs within minutes. In a case in Chattogram, a Facebook post falsely claiming that a local Hindu man had desecrated the Quran led to a mob attack that left two dead and several homes burned. The post was proven false hours later. A recent survey by the South Asian Network on Economic Modelling (SANEM) found that 71 per cent of Bangladeshi youth believe that mob violence is now a way of public life, while 47 per cent fear becoming a target of politically motivated attacks. In Bangladesh, the last year has brought significant changes. Beyond the statistics and hashtags, Bangladesh is a living reality that not just its minorities have to come to terms with.
