Greg Wood's selections for Thursday, with full previews of each race to follow.
While the Gold Cup on Friday revolves around the odds-on Galopin Des Champs and his bid for a third consecutive success, the Ryanair Chase over two and a half miles on Thursday is much more open, with live contenders from Britain, Ireland and France, and the prospect of seeing the bold front‑runner Il Est Francais tackling Cheltenham for the first time, with top-class opponents including Fact To File and Protektorat in hot pursuit, is one to savour.
Il Est Francais (3.20) was a clear leader for much of the way in the King George VI Chase at Kempton at Christmas before Banbridge reeled him in on the run to the last, and his devastating front-running success in the Kauto Star Novices Chase at the same meeting in 2023 was one of the best performances by a novice in recent years.
The fact that his best form outside France has come at a flat track is a slight concern, but the drop back on Thursday to an intermediate trip on decent ground should suit and Noel George and Amanda Zetterholm's seven-year-old has a big chance to become only the second French‑trained winner at the festival meeting since 2005. Further news, via PA Media: Gordon Elliott has issued a positive update on Galvin, who was taken away in a horse ambulance for assessment after being pulled up in the Cross Country Chase. Elliott said on ITV's Opening Show: 'Galvin had a haematomma on his knee but he was x-rayed and everything was good. He's on his way home now.' Share
Weather report: sunny spells expected between 12pm and 5pm today's conditions should be ideal. Share
Going news: good to soft ground, no longer soft in places. A dry night in Cheltenham, in one sense at least. Share
Some news ahead of the third day. Langer Dan is out of the feature race, the Stayers' Hurdle. Dan Skelton took to X to announce the sad news the Cheltenham specialist will be out.
Unfortunately it's not great news for Langer Dan this morning,' said Skelton on X. 'He had a slightly dirty nose and we've had the vet have a look at him. We did a tracheal wash and there's a bit of mucus and it was too much.
I've made him a non-runner which is very disappointing. He's been a horse who has turned up there every year since he was a four-year-old. I'm absolutely gutted for Colm [Donlon] who owns him.
We always trust him to come alive at this time of year. He will, however, go to Aintree with a bit of luck. It shouldn't take long to clear up, it's just bad timing. These things happen and I'm sure he'll be cheered on in the Aintree Hurdle, one of the great races of the meeting. Share Greg Wood
Good morning from Cheltenham on day three of the 2025 festival meeting – effectively the day that was added to the schedule 20 years ago to expand it from three to four. It still feels a little uncertain of itself, with two Grade Ones in the middle of the card rather than a standout feature, but one or other of the Ryanair Chase or the Stayers' Hurdle generally throws up a decent yarn, and sometimes – as was the case on a memorable afternoon in 2019 – it is both.
This year, perhaps – it is always risky to be too dogmatic at Cheltenham – it will be the Ryanair, which is a vanishingly rare meeting of top-class chasers trained in the three major jumping nations. The Irish team is led by Fact To File, who was quoted at fairly short odds for the Gold Cup after winning the three-mile novice here last year but is leaving that to his stable companion, Galopin Des Champs. The British challenge is headed by Protektorat, last year's winner, while France fields the hugely exciting Il Est Francais.
He is, admittedly, trained in France by an Englishman and a Swede (Noel George and Amanda Zetterholm) but having had just a single winner at this meeting since 2005, the French will celebrate long and hard all the same if the front-running Il Est Francais can stamp his authority on Cheltenham at the first attempt. He announced himself as a major talent with a devastating display in the Grade One novice at Kempton's Boxing Day meeting in 2023, and put up a similarly spectacular display for much of the way in the King George VI Chase at Christmas. Something similar over this very different course this afternoon will be quite the sight to see.
It is a bright, clear morning in the west country, with a chill in the air but no sign of any of yesterday's snow as the action switches to the New Course for the final two days of the meeting.
The going is good-to-soft (from good-to-soft, soft in places), while the news from the weighing room is that Jack Kennedy, Gordon Elliott's number one, will have to pass the doctor to ride today after slightly aggravating the leg injury that ruled him out of much of the earlier part of the season. Since Sam Ewing, who had been filling very successfully for Kennedy earlier in the year, is also ruled out today, it could be a real headache for Elliott.
My picks for the afternoon – full disclosure: currently showing a slight loss of £2.18 to level stakes – are here, and you can get the latest news on Kennedy, his potential replacements and much, much more here on the blog as the day unfolds. Share

Coco Gauff wins French Open as Aryna Sabalenka makes bitter admission

Coco Gauff beat Aryna Sabalenka to win her first French Open singles title, with the American forced to come from behind to be at the world number one at Roland Garros Coco Gauff produced a remarkable comeback win to beat Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-4 in the French Open final and quoted Tyler, the Creator as she celebrated becoming the new queen of clay. The victory saw Gauff claim her second Grand Slam singles title and become the first American woman to lift the trophy since Serena Williams in 2015. The 21-year-old had previously reached the final in 2022, but was thrashed 6-1 6-3 by Iga Swiatek and had to come from behind to triumph over Sabalenka. ‌ "I don't know what I've done to deserve such support from the French crowd but I really appreciate it," Gauff said after the game. "I'm gonna quote Tyler, the Creator, who said 'If I ever told you I had a doubt inside me, I think I was lying'. I'll leave that with you guys." ‌ Sabalenka, meanwhile, apologised to her team after the match for a "terrible final" and vowed to "come back stronger". The world number one said: "This will hurt so much, especially after such a tough two weeks playing great tennis in terrible conditions. "Thank you my team for the support, I'm sorry for this terrible final. As always I will come back stronger. Anyway, Coco congrats. In these tough conditions, you were a better player than me. "Well done on a great two weeks. Congrats on the second slam. You're a fighter. Hard worker. Congrats to you and your team. "Honestly sometimes it felt like she was hitting the ball from the frame. Somehow magically the ball lands in the court, and you are on the back foot. "It felt like a joke, honestly, like somebody from above was just staying there laughing, like, let's see if you can handle this. ‌ "It's another tough final in a Grand Slam against Coco. Another terrible performance from me against Coco in the final. "I have to just kind of, like, step back and look at this from the perspective and try to finally learn the lesson, because I cannot go out there every time against her in the finals of the Grand Slam and play such terrible tennis and give those wins, not easily, but like, emotionally, you know?" The men's final will be contested on Sunday, with Jannik Sinner set to take on Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets on Friday to book his place in the final, while Alcaraz defeated Lorenzo Musetti after he retired in the fourth set of their match.

Coco Gauff claims a three-set victory in French Open, beating top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka

Coco Gauff won the French Open for the first time by defeating top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4 in Saturday's final. The American tennis player, who is ranked second in the world, came from a set down to beat Sabalenka and take home her second major trophy after the 2023 US Open. The match between Gauff and Sabalenka was the first time since 2013 the world number one and number two fought for the French Open title and just the second in 30 years. The match came to its conclusion on Gauff's second match point, when opponent Sabalenka sent a backhand wide. The 21-year-old American fell onto her back, covering her face with both hands as she started to sob, then got up and held her hand over her mouth. After greeting Sabalenka at the net with a warm hug and thanking the umpire, Gauff screamed out with joy and relief. Speaking on court after her win, Gauff said her defeat in the same stadium in 2022 at the age of 18 put her in a 'dark place,' as she thanked her fans. 'The crowd really helped me today, you guys were cheering for me so hard and I don't know what I did to deserve so much love from the French crowd. 'But I appreciate you, guys.' Her opponent, who fought back tears, praised her for being a "fighter" and said she deserved the win, but added that the windy conditions made for an error-strewn contest. 'This will hurt so much. Coco, congrats, in the tough conditions you were a better player than me,' Sabalenka said. 'Well done, great two weeks, and congrats on the second Grand Slam, it's well deserved.' Whilst her first French Open singles' trophy, Saturday's win marks her second trophy from the Parisian tournament after winning last year's women's doubles title with Katerina Siniakova.

Wales international left heartbroken amid wild promotion celebrations

Wales international left heartbroken amid wild promotion celebrations Sam Davies and Grenoble were hoping to make it third time lucky in the Pro D2 play-off final, but underdogs Montauban spoiled their day Sam Davies looks crestfallen as Montauban fans celebrate their promotion to the Top 14 (Image: FR-UK YouTube ) Wales fly-half Sam Davies once again suffered Top 14 heartbreak as Pro D2 leaders Grenoble were beaten in a dramatic promotion play-off by Montauban in Toulouse. For the third year in a row, Grenoble were once again beaten in the Pro D2 play-off match - with Montauban sealing their place in the top flight of France ahead of next season. Davies' Grenoble had finished the season top of the Pro D2 with a dominant 98 points - 21 more than sixth-placed Montauban. ‌ However, as was the case in 2023 and 2024, Grenoble were unable to win - as Montauban continued their remarkable play-off run with a spirited 24-19 victory. ‌ All is not lost for Grenoble and Davies though, with the Top 14 access match still to come. That will see them face the second-to-last team in the Top 14 from this season, with the winner playing in the top flight next season. Having signed a new three-year deal with Grenoble this season, the hope for Davies would have been that the French club could finally make the step back up to the Top 14. Article continues below Ultimately, despite 11 points from the boot of the 10-cap Wales international, that wasn't to be. The Welshman was forced off injured after just six minutes of the match, using his jersey as a makeshift sling for his arm as he left the pitch. However, his absence was short-lived - returning to the field 10 minutes later with Grenoble leading 3-0. ‌ Soon after, he extended their lead from the tee with a penalty of his own. However, underdogs Montauban rallied back - taking a 21-6 lead in the early stages of the second-half. The boot of Davies - as well as a try from Wilfried Hulleu - dragged Grenoble back to within two points. Article continues below With 13 minutes left on the clock, Davies had a penalty out wide to nudge Grenoble ahead, but his effort was agonisingly wide. Thomas Fortunel knocked over a long-range penalty six minutes from time to extend Montauban's lead. Desperately needing a try, Grenoble couldn't find a score late on - leading to wild celebrations from the Montauban fans.
