WATCH: MLB's first female umpire Jen Pawol checks Braves' Hurston Waldrep for illegal substances in 1st inning
Jen Pawol made baseball history on Saturday by becoming the first woman to umpire an MLB regular-season game, taking the post at first base during Saturday's matchup between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves. The game is the first of a doubleheader the two teams will play. After the top of the first inning, Braves rookie Hurston Waldrep became a part of the story as the first pitcher to be checked for illegal substances when he came off the field and walked toward the Atlanta dugout. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Waldrep retired the Marlins in order in the first, striking out Xavier Edwards and Kyle Stowers with his splitter before getting Agustín Ramírez to ground out. He got through the frame with 13 pitches, eight of them thrown for strikes. As he walked toward the dugout, Pawol stopped Waldrep for a routine check of his glove and right hand for anything extra that may have aided in grip on the baseball. Nothing was amiss, and Waldrep went to the bench while Pawol returned to her position at first base. Pawol, 48, is set to umpire in all three games of the Marlins-Braves series this weekend. After umpiring first base for the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, she'll be at third base for the nightcap. And on Sunday, Pawol will call balls and strikes behind home plate. Previously, she has called MLB spring training games during the past two seasons, the first woman to do so since Ria Cortesio in 2007. Pawol is MLB's first female umpire following the NBA breaking that gender barrier with Violet Palmer in 1997 and Sarah Thomas officiating an NFL game in 2015. In 2022, Stéphanie Frappart became the first woman to referee a men's World Cup game between Germany and Costa Rica. Pawol became the seventh woman to officiate a minor-league game after graduating from Minor League Baseball's umpire camp in 2016. Her cap and mask from that game are in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In 2023, she was promoted to Triple-A games. Altogether, she umpired over 1,200 minor-league games before making her MLB debut.

Pawol becomes first woman to umpire in MLB
Jen Pawol became the first woman to umpire in Major League Baseball on Saturday when she worked at first base during a game between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves. The 48-year-old, who has worked in more than 1,200 minor league games before getting her promotion this week, achieved the historic milestone at Truist Park in Atlanta in the first game of a double-header. "I'm aware of the gravity. I'm aware of the magnitude," Pawol said. Pawol was set to work at third base later in the second game of the twin bill on Saturday before calling balls and strikes behind home plate in Sunday's contest. "Once I started umpiring, I was like, 'This is for me,'" Pawol recalled before the game. "I can't explain it. It's just in my DNA. "This is a viable career, to become a professional umpire, for men and women, girls and boys. I'm able to make a living doing it and I'm passionate about it. I just work harder every day and get better before tomorrow." js/jc

Why RB Ray Davis just kicked an extra point for the Buffalo Bills in preseason game
Why RB Ray Davis just kicked an extra point for the Buffalo Bills in preseason game originally appeared on The Sporting News Ray Davis is a running back. For that matter, he's a super promising RB. He shone when given the opportunity as a Buffalo Bills rookie. But he has another skill, and it showed up Saturday. In the Bills' preseason opener, they got into the end zone on a Dawson Knox touchdown in the second quarter. And there was Davis, kicking a low line drive for the extra point. MORE: Shedeur Sanders shows his NFL Draft slide might've been a mistake Why is Ray Davis kicking for the Bills? Ray Davis is the Bills' emergency kicker. On the initial depth chart, he was listed as kicker No. 2 behind Tyler Bass. Bass is injured (pelvis) and didn't play in the preseason opener. The Bills signed Caden Davis to fill in as the kicker, but Buffalo doesn't gain a lot from letting Davis kick an extra point. And while it was a little low, Davis made it. He once kicked a 57-yard field goal in high school, so those muscular legs have some strength in them. This might not be the last time Bills fans get to watch their young running back kick the ball between the uprights.
