East Bengal soak in derby joy
As Oscar Bruzon made his way to the Mohun Bagan SG bench for a customary handshake with his opposite Jose Molina, the table was turned by then, and how.
East Bengal rode a brace from Dimitrios Diamantakos to down Mohun Bagan 2-1 here on Sunday, storming into the Durand Cup semifinals and ending the green-and-maroon brigade's long reign at the venue.
Coming off the bench in the 19th minute following in-form striker Hamid Ahadad's early injury, Diamantakos set the tempo by converting a penalty in the 38th minute.
The Greek forward made it 2-0 seven minutes after the break, providing finish to a sumptuous move originating in the centre circle.

Anirudh Thapa reduced the margin to 1-2 in the 68th minute as Mohun Bagan's gameplan suddenly gained a sense of structure, forcing East Bengal to roll with the punches. But Bruzon's side eventually weathered that storm and emerged triumphant, handing Bagan their first defeat at the venue in 19 matches.
The win — which came 22 days after a 3-2 win in the CFL Premier Division — was also East Bengal's first in a 'senior' derby in six matches since they had got the better of the arch-rivals, also in the Durand Cup on Aug 12 in 2023.
In the Durand Cup semifinal on Wednesday, East Bengal will take on another city side Diamond Harbour FC, who defeated Jamshedpur FC 2-0 in the day's earlier quarterfinal.
With influential Palestinian midfielder Mohammad Rashid back home owing to a family tragedy, East Bengal suffered another jolt early on in the match when Hamid was forced to leave the field with a muscle pull, thus paving the way for Diamantakos to enter the stage and steal the show.
With the arrival of new foreigners like Hamid and Miguel Fereira, the Greek forward's role in Bruzon's scheme of things has been subject of various speculations. But when an opportunity presented itself, he grasped it in a game-changing manner.
With Mohamad Rakip keeping a constant vigil on Liston Colaco's movements and a brilliant Kevin Sibille covering Jamie Maclaren, Bagan's attacking aspirations were somewhat subdued in the first half.
With such worries once taken care of at the back, East Bengal looked more pro-active and adventurous.
Still, the Bagan stands at their happy hunting ground brought their thunder, just as Molina expected, but East Bengal soon produced a silencer.
Edmund Lalrindika's appeal for a penalty was ignored by the referee Venkatesh R, but when Bipin Singh came calling from the other end, Bagan full-back Asish Rai Singh was guilty of tripping him from behind inside the box and Diamantakos made no mistake in beating Vishal Kaith from the resultant spot-kick.
Molina introduced Jason Cumimngs in place of Tamang and moved Sahal Abdul Samad to the right wing. Samad almost struck but Bagan woke up to more concerns when East Bengal swelled the lead. In a swift move, Miguel started in the middle and Naorem Mahesh Singh released the ball for Diamanatkos to pounce on the opportunity and, with Alberto Rodriguez attempting a desperate block, the ball took a slight deflection off the Bagan centre-back and settled into the net.
The Bagan fortress suddenly appeared to be getting reduced to rubble. And they reacted with their trademark fighting spirit. Colaco's shot ricocheted off the crosspiece and Thapa found the target in the following move. Sibille then effected a goalline save, denying Maclaren and Gill had to deal with a Rai threat with utmost alacrity.
Eventually, East Bengal defence stood firm and sealed the deal.

NEUFC face Shillong Lajong for a place in final
Kolkata: "These are the kind of games we live for," NorthEast United FC skipper Michel Zabaco said ahead of the encore of last edition's semifinal that awaits them at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on Tuesday. Shillong Lajong will once again be their last hurdle as the defending champions look to make back-to back finals of the Durand Cup. Although NEUFC came out 3-1 winners in their previous last-four clash and also got the better of Lajong in the group-stage fixture of this edition, the Juan Pedro Benali-led side is aware of the task at and. "It's a derby and it will be difficult for both teams. We know each other very well. Last year's game and even the group-stage match are in the past. Now it's a semifinal, a door to the final. Both teams will approach it differently, and both will fight to win," Benali said at the press-match interaction in Shillong on Monday. Star striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie has begun the season in prolific form — with seven goals in four matches of the tournament. While he has led the line with distinction, he has also got the support of fellow attackers Jithin MS, Lalrinzuala, Parthib Gogoi, Lalbiakdika, Thoi Singh, Chema Nunez and Jairo Samperio. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo In midfield, Andy Rodriguez, Mayakkannan and Macarton Nickson have provided control and balance, while at the back, Zabaco has marshalled the defence with authority. Goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh will enter the clash high on confidence after registering his first clean sheet in the quarterfinal against Bodoland FC. But the NEUFC defence will be faced by the youthful firepower of the local side, who are also expected to have the majority of the crowd support on the day. The Birendra Thapa-coached Lajong will also be boosted in the presence of the trio of Phrangki Buam, Everbrightson Sana and Figo Syndai, who have scored nine of Lajong's 12 goals so far. Skipper Kenstar Kharshong has also maturity and swiftness of mind in holding a youthful defence together. "The team is more confident compared to last year," Thapa said on Monday. "We have lost to them twice, but our approach will be different in tomorrow's match. It will be a tough contest." No one involved with the much-anticipated knockout fixture will beg to differ with the coach. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Giannis Antetokounmpo and Mariah Riddlesprigger celebrate son's birthday amid Greece team dispute
Giannis Antetokounmpo and Mariah Riddlesprigger celebrate son's birthday Amid Greece team dispute (Image Source: Getty Images) In Athens, Greece, Giannis Antetokounmpo 's family had a quiet little celebration. His wife, Mariah Riddlesprigger, posted a heartfelt message. Their son, Maverick Shai, turned four. But it wasn't all happy moments. Giannis was getting ready for EuroBasket 2025. At the same time, his NBA team, the Milwaukee Bucks, was in a clash with the Greek federation. The family is caught between joy and worry. Mariah Riddlesprigger's special message for Maverick Shai Antetokounmpo On August 18, Mariah Riddlesprigger shared a loving birthday message and family photos on Instagram from Athens. Maverick, her second child with Giannis Antetokounmpo, turned four. She wrote, 'I pray that you continue asking questions, pushing boundaries, loving hard and driving me insane because these moments are short and I love every ounce of your craziness! To the best brother and mama's boy, we love you dearly! Happy 4th Birthday to my little best friend!' Mariah and Giannis have four children: Liam, Maverick, Eva, and Aria. All of them are with their parents in Greece, supporting Giannis during practice. The photos Mariah posted showed Maverick with both parents, on vacation and playing basketball. The moment was warm and real. Mariah's words gave people a peek into their lives away from basketball games and busy schedules. Even when there is tension and big decisions, special family moments shine through. Giannis Antetokounmpo's EuroBasket 2025 challenge with the Milwaukee Bucks Giannis Antetokounmpo had a serious issue off the court, even as the family celebrated. The Greek national basketball team hoped Giannis would compete in the EuroBasket 2025 event. On August 20, the team will compete against Latvia, and then they will have to take on France and Italy. Greece needs Giannis for these big games. But his NBA team, the Milwaukee Bucks, slowed things down. Giannis's contract is huge, $54million per year. FIBA only offers limited insurance in case a player gets injured. The Bucks wanted more protection before letting him play for Greece. They waited for a written agreement from the Greek federation. This insurance dispute left Giannis stuck. He practiced with the team but could not play in exhibition matches until the paperwork was ready. Recently, Bucks officials agreed to let Giannis play, but only after tough talks. On August 16, Coach Vassilis Spanoulis said Giannis could finally join team activities. Basketball fans hope to see him play on August 20 at the Acropolis Tournament. Greece last won a medal at EuroBasket back in 2009. The national team needs Giannis to boost their chances this year.
