Matthew McConaughey's forgotten thriller with a 'sense of mystery' is now streaming for free

Daily Mirror18-07-2025
Matthew McConaughey is one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation, but you may have missed his leading role in this coming-of-age drama
This weekend, you can stream a critically lauded dramatic thriller featuring Matthew McConaughey for free.

Available on BBC iPlayer from Saturday, 19th July, it's a must-see for fans of the Oscar-winning Hollywood heavyweight.

McConaughey, renowned for his performances in Interstellar and True Detective, initially rose to fame as a charming lead in romantic comedies, sharing the screen with stars like Kate Hudson and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Before clinching an Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club and venturing into the cosmos with Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, McConaughey starred in a lesser-known but highly praised coming-of-age drama directed by Jeff Nichols.
In Mud, McConaughey plays a fugitive on the run who forms an unlikely pact with two young lads while concealed on a secluded island, reports the Express.

The film features Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One) and Jacob Lofland (Landman) as the duo who stumble upon Mud hiding in a derelict boat and decide to aid him in reuniting with his beloved, Juniper (played by Reese Witherspoon).
Despite receiving glowing reviews and boasting a stellar 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this 2012 gem has often been eclipsed by McConaughey's more prominent roles. Now, it's getting another shot at recognition among UK viewers via BBC iPlayer.
A fervent five-star Google review exclaimed: "Loved this movie-watched it with my teenage son-a rich spiritual universe is contained within this well crafted and brilliantly acted film.

"There is a depth, authenticity and mystery here not often found-there aren't enough intelligent soulful movies that so artfully speak to adults and (older) teens at the same time. Mysterious and simply entertaining; easy as a snack but as (ful)filling as a thick, juicy steak. Watch it with someone you care about."
Another viewer raved: "Dreamy with a touch of poetic licence - I found it quite captivating. Keeps you guessing to the end.
"The views on the river are stunning," a different enthusiast wrote: "I would strongly recommend for older kids and young adults.

"It maintains the sense of mystery and adventure, while dealing with many of the issues young people struggle to understand. It is both harrowing and warm hearted. i personally loved it. The fact that McConaughey is gorgeous does not hurt."
The acclaim carries on over on Letterboxd, where another five-star critique states: "Jeff Nichols' Mud is a beautiful coming of age film. Not only is it beautiful but also, compelling, thrilling, heartily emotional and a well-rounded film."

Meanwhile, a final supporter declared: "The last half hour of this is some of the greatest filmmaking I've seen in a while. Goddamn, I loved it.
"McConaughey kills it once again and this kid Tye Sheridan, man, he is great."
Don't miss your opportunity to discover Mud as it arrives on the free streaming platform this weekend.
Mud is available on BBC iPlayer from Saturday, 19th July.

Top WWE SummerSlam match at risk with top star 'blocked from entering US'

A major WWE match announced for SummerSlam 2025 is in serious jeopardy after a top superstar wasn't allowed to travel back to the United States. On the first night of the August 2 and 3 double header, Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul are set to face Randy Orton and Grammy Award-winning singer Jelly Roll in a tag team match. McIntyre, known as the Scottish Warrior, has been back in the UK for a friend's wedding in England over the weekend, but he's now claimed he was stopped from boarding his flight back to the US where he has lived for a number of years. 'There's now a good chance I don't make #SummerSlam,' he captioned a video on X as he talking into his phone camera from a field. 'It's quite a week I've had. You wanna know how it's been capped off? i can't get back into America, They wouldn't let me board my flight,' he said in the video. 'I'm in England still, at my buddy's wedding – what a wedding it was. Planning to go back, train for SummerSlam, but no, no, no, no, I got blocked. **Warning – the below video includes strong language** 'Wife and I walked up to the gate, trying to check in, always goes perfectly fine. Not this time.' McIntyre noted that there was an issue with his documentation, despite never having a problem any of the other times he's been travelling. He continued: ''Drew, you don't have your US passport. I know who you are. I know you've lived there for a long time, I know you're showing me pictures of your US passport, and your global entry. ''I know exactly who you are, your property and the likes. But no, we can't let you in the country buddy. 'So my wife and I panic, we say we've got a sick animal at home, we're good people, we care about our animals, we care about people. In the end, his wife travelled back alone 'against her will' to see their pet cat, while McIntyre had to turn around and leave the airport. Ever the professional, the former world champion used the real life incident to continue his on-screen feud with Jelly Roll. 'Here I am. So what happened, what changed this trip? Jelly Roll. You know somebody, got some connections? You've got your 15 minutes of fame right now, can get away with some stuff? You're hot, soon you will not be, so you're getting it in when you can,' he quipped. 'You realised when I took off my shirt on SmackDown, you went , 'Oh my God! All that aura, I'm screwed!' So you screw up my training for SummerSlam week. More Trending 'Why am I in a field? I don't know what I'm in a field but I can tell you one thing! When this is all over, I'm gonna get back, and I'm gonna drop you Jelly Roll. 'I'm gonna make you pay. And eventually, you're gonna gain all that weight back and you're gonna look like one of these f***ers.' It remains to be seen whether McIntyre will make it back by the the weekend, or if a replacement will need to be found for the match. Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya's absence from spotlight fuels wild rumours

After winning an Oscar for Judas and the Black Messiah, Daniel Kaluuya has retreated from the spotlight, which has led some fans to believe that the star now leads a secret life outside of Hollywood Daniel Kaluuya's career has recently become the subject of wild speculation following his absence from the screen. ‌ Since winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2021 for Judas and the Black Messiah, the British star has kept a surprisingly low profile in Hollywood blockbusters. When he bagged his Oscar, Kaluuya was reportedly flooded with movie offers - but he has since stayed clear from appearing on screen. However, this had ultimately led to wild rumours emerging online, particularly after a social media post claimed he'd 'joined a cult.' ‌ The post blew up with over 24 million views before being pulled, which had ignited an old story dating back to the filming of Nope. At that time, US media outlets linked Kaluuya to a New Age figure named Vanylla Salimah Mahmoud, also known as Heir Holiness, who described herself as his spiritual adviser and once said she was his manager. ‌ Reports said Kaluuya had ended his relationship with his previous agency and publicists amid concerns about Mahmoud's influence. However, a Hollywood executive close to the actor said Kaluuya hasn't disappeared but is simply following his own path, focusing on smaller films, writing, and producing rather than mainstream blockbusters. ‌ Currently, Kaluuya is involved in the upcoming Spider-Verse animated film and is developing a live-action movie based on the children's character Barney. He is now represented by the William Morris Endeavor agency and has several projects underway through his production company, 59%. Raised on a council estate in north London by his Ugandan single mother, Kaluuya began his career in British television before gaining international recognition with Jordan Peele's 2017 film Get Out, which earned him Oscar and BAFTA nominations. ‌ When asked about the cult rumours in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kaluuya said: 'It showed me that I was in a paradigm of fame. An unnamed, unverified source has more credibility than what is actually said and the truth of the situation... That's not what happened.' Heir Holiness also denied the cult allegations, calling Kaluuya 'family' and saying, 'They made it up. It was very shocking... My main thing was to make sure he's safe and able to do his work. All of it is fake.' Born in London in 1989 to Ugandan parents, the actor grew up on a Camden council estate. He attended Torriano Primary School, St Aloysius' College, and Camden School for Girls in its co-educational sixth-form for his A-levels. From a young age, he had a passion for acting, writing his first play at nine and studying the art at the Anna Scher Theatre School. Kaluuya began acting professionally in 2006, gaining early fame for his role as Posh Kenneth in Skins and appearing in shows like Doctor Who and Silent Witness before breaking into film.

World War II series based on 'one of the greatest books ever' is now available to stream

The 2019 drama series features a stellar cast and is a 'wonderful rendering of the classic satirical novel' A "must-watch" World War II series is currently available to stream. The gripping drama features an ensemble cast and is based on "one of the greatest books ever written". Telly fans are being urged to make sure to catch the mini-series while it is readily available, with viewers hailing the "amazing" cast and "wonderful" retelling of the book. Hulu series Catch-22 first appeared on the small screen in 2019, as an adaptation of Joseph Heller's celebrated 1961 novel of the same name. The series follows the journey of Captain John Yossarian (played by Christopher Abbott) and his comrades during World War II as they carry out their duties for their country. Their freedom depends on finishing a set number of operations. Yet, precisely when they approach their liberation, the mission tally is consistently raised, throwing them back into danger, reports the Express. The ensemble cast also features George Clooney as Scheisskopf, Emmy-winning Argo star Kyle Chandler as Colonel Cathcart, Godfather of Harlem's Rafi Gavron as Aarfy, Reacher's Daniel David Stewart as Milo, and Major Crimes' Graham Patrick Martin as Orr, amongst others. One TV fan gave the show a 10/10 rating on IMDb. They said: "Fantastic. The entire cast of this series is amazing. "It has all the drama and humor but not as slapstick as the movie. I've been glued to the TV since it was released. You will fall in love with these characters and the actors who portray them." A second viewer commented: "Wonderful rendering of the classic satirical novel. This is a very enjoyable watch, especially if you read the book and saw the movie. "The acting is superb and the battle scenes are realistic but not too graphically violent. I appreciate a director and writer who do not feel they must gross us out at every turn. It has a nice subtlety and that was lacking in the original movie." Another reviewer praised it as: "One of the greatest books ever written, certainly as an anti-war film." Speaking about Abbott's performance as John Yossarian, they added: "His face is so emotive and he captured the complexity of his character." Wrapping up, they wrote: "For those of you who totally missed the point and were expecting a regular war movie, did you get what the title means?" A fourth viewer hailed it as "a must watch" and said: "Perfect mix of comedy and drama. Made me laugh one second and get emotional the next." Apple TV+ free trial £8.99 £0 Apple Buy Now on Apple Product Description The phrase Catch-22 represents Captain Yossarian's hopeless efforts to escape the battlefield by pretending to be mad, only to discover that those who are truly mentally unstable will continue with their assignments. Beyond his acting role in Catch-22, Clooney worked as an executive producer on the series and directed two of the six episodes. This 2019 version of Catch-22 comes after a 1970 cinema adaptation, with the latest television series securing an 84 per cent fresh score from critics and an 82 per cent approval rating from viewers. Catch-22 is currently available for streaming on Prime Video and Apple TV+.
