Aaron Rodgers has a lot more to lose with the Steelers than he did with the Jets
LATROBE, Pa. — It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood in the hometown of Fred Rogers, American TV icon, as the Pittsburgh Steelers opened camp amid rolling hills and old brick buildings and towering steeples that rose toward the sky. Only on this summer afternoon, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood officially became Mister Rodgers' Neighborhood. Aaron Rodgers came bouncing down one of those hills at Saint Vincent College, holding his helmet in one hand and reaching out and touching fan after fan with the other as men, women and children in their Big Ben and Jerome Bettis and T.J. Watt jerseys shouted his name. Aaron Rodgers walking down to first camp practice at SVC #Steelers #NFL — Steelers Depot 7⃣ (@Steelersdepot) July 24, 2025 It's early — as in really early — but an interception thrown on his very first pass in his very first team period of camp did not wreck a fun and hopeful opening act for what could be Rodgers' 21st and final NFL season. Nor did it dump a bucket of ice water on the notion that Rodgers and the Steelers represent an ideal match of a quarterback in dire need of a happy ending and a dead-serious coach inside a dead-serious franchise with six Super Bowl trophies stuffed in its case. Advertisement Mike Tomlin is exactly what Rodgers needs to finish his career. After a season defined by signature Jets buffoonery, Rodgers needed a coach who doesn't suffer fools easily. He needed Tomlin, a partner who can cut all the fat out of Rodgers' professional life (or most of it anyway) and bring him back to his roots in the game. Make him a football player again, nothing more or less. As former Super Bowl foes in the quarterback's early Green Bay days, Tomlin and Rodgers have been flirting with each other for a long time. This marriage was destined to happen. If Rodgers can make Tomlin a playoff winner again after the quarterback turns 42 in December, it's going to be one helluva story. Aaron Rodgers spoke to the media following Thursday's #SteelersCamp practice Full Media Availability ⬇️ — Steelers Live (@SteelersLive) July 24, 2025 But there is a potential downside to this union that could have considerable long-term consequences. Rodgers has a lot more to lose here than he ever had with the Jets, because if he posts another 5-12 record or a 6-11 or a 7-10 or an 8-9 before calling it quits, that record will stick to the quarterback and his historical standing in the sport. The Steelers are not in the business of sub-.500 seasons. Ever. Tomlin has strung together 18 consecutive non-losing years, 15 of them winning years. He has made a dozen trips to the playoffs, two trips to the Super Bowl, and one trip to the ultimate victory stand. Tomlin has won 63 percent of his games while starting Ben Roethlisberger and the likes of Charlie Batch, Dennis Dixon, Landry Jones, Michael Vick, Mason Rudolph, Devlin 'Duck' Hodges, Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Even Duck Hodges went 3-3 with the Steelers. As he waves goodbye, Rodgers can't be the face of Tomlin's first losing season. There will be a price to be paid for that. Coach Tomlin spoke to the media following the first #SteelersCamp practice. Full Media Availability ⬇️ — Steelers Live (@SteelersLive) July 24, 2025 Rodgers' last employer amounted to an entirely different story. Long a dysfunctional operation, the Jets were the anti-Steelers. The last time they even appeared in a Super Bowl, Richard Nixon had yet to be inaugurated for his first presidential term. The Jets recruited Rodgers as a savior, and they didn't even try to hide it. In fact, they promoted this truth every hour on the hour and allowed the Packers legend to hand-pick his teammates, his coaches and his plays. Advertisement On arrival, Rodgers spoke openly of finding a companion for a lonely-looking Super Bowl III trophy, and the beaten-down fan base ate it up. All the way until the fourth snap of the 2023 season, when Rodgers went down with a ruptured Achilles. The injury stole Year 1 in New York and all but ruined Year 2 in New York, and that was that. The Hail Mary king took a Hail Mary gamble on the Jets, thinking a championship with them in the big city would almost be worth two or three rings, and it was a Hollywood-sized flop. And yet ultimately that would've been OK. In assessing where, exactly, the four-time MVP stood as an all-time great, many would have dismissed 2023 and 2024 as just another extension of the Jets being the Jets. Of Woody Johnson being Woody Johnson. But Pittsburgh offers no such sanctuary, no alternative place for the haters to go. The Steelers don't know how to lose. Their miserable years come in the form of first-round postseason exits. Pittsburgh is growing tired of Tomlin and his inability to advance in the playoffs? Hey, there are about 25 fan bases in the NFL that would be thrilled to have him. Tomlin is betting on Rodgers to help make this seminal season special, and to honor Omar Khan's stated Super Bowl aims after the Steelers' general manager made a series of loud offseason moves. Was it a smart bet? After getting fired by the Jets, Rodgers seems awfully content in the hands of competent people. The receiver he shares a suite with in their dorm, DK Metcalf, said his quarterback is equally skilled at communicating with one and all, making fun of the young guys and commanding the huddle. Rookie quarterback Will Howard described Rodgers in similar terms, saying he 'just looks happy' when around his teammates. 'I didn't really know what to expect from him,' Howard said, 'and that was the biggest thing when he came in and he said, 'Give me a clean slate. Get to know me for me.' 'And I wanted to do that. I didn't want to come in with any expectations of who he was, and in getting to know him, he's such a down-to-earth good guy. He likes to joke around and have fun … but also, you can just tell it's pure and he loves the game. He wants to be here because he loves football. He wants to end his career the right way.' Advertisement Steelers fans want the same thing. So they packed the bleachers at Chuck Noll Field and sat in lawn chairs under umbrellas to hide from the sun. Rodgers had some good throws and some bad throws and reminded reporters afterward that he's been 'pretty stellar taking care of the football' throughout his career. 'I'm going to throw some picks,' Rodgers said, 'but I'm going to throw some touchdowns too.' He needs six more to hurdle Brett Favre (508 touchdown passes) and land in fourth place on the all-time list, and anyone who knows Aaron Rodgers knows that nugget was somewhere on his Reasons to Play One More Year list. But the biggest reason was to chase a second championship ring one last time. That pursuit started Thursday in Latrobe, also the hometown of Arnold Palmer, the ultimate go-for-broke golfer. In his old age, Aaron Rodgers is still capable of putting his ball in the fairway. But his career scorecard is going to take a hit if he hooks this Steelers season into the trees.

Aaron Rodgers-DK Metcalf chemistry a work in progress as Steelers open camp
LATROBE, Pa. — Pittsburgh Steelers offseason addition DK Metcalf was settling into his dorm room at Saint Vincent College on Wednesday when he heard a knock on his door. The Pro Bowl receiver walked to his front door to answer, only to realize the sound was coming from the bathroom. He opened it to find 41-year-old, four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers. '(Rodgers) was like, 'Oh man, I was hoping it was you,'' Metcalf recalled. 'I was like 'Ehhhh, 'I did not think I was going to have a roommate … but glad to see you, too.'' DK Metcalf on how he found out that Aaron Rodgers would be his suitemate at Saint Vincent College: Rodgers: 'I was hoping it was you.' Metcalf: 'Ehhh, I did not think I'd have a roommate.' 😂 — Mike DeFabo (@MikeDeFabo) July 24, 2025 Making Rodgers and Metcalf suitemates is a signature play out of coach Mike Tomlin's playbook. Tomlin often talks about how the destination training camp in Latrobe provides an opportunity to build a team and capture 'what cannot be measured.' For the new-look offense to thrive, perhaps the most important element will be a strong connection between Rodgers and Metcalf. Advertisement That process began in the offseason when Rodgers and Metcalf took part in informal throwing sessions in California. Now in camp, it includes sharing a bathroom that connects the two rooms. 'I love this idea, this opportunity to be out here in Latrobe and to stay here and connect with the guys,' Rodgers said. 'When I got in the room (on Tuesday), I realized we were sharing something. I was secretly kind of hoping it wasn't a big lineman or something. Maybe someone that cared about their hygiene a little bit. So when I walked in and saw a standard suitcase, I said, 'Oh, I think this is going to be good. It's probably DK.'' Aaron Rodgers on his new teammate (and suitemate) DK Metcalf: — Mike DeFabo (@MikeDeFabo) July 24, 2025 And on the field? Well, that connection remains a bit of a work in progress. Because Rodgers participated only in individual drills during minicamp, Wednesday was his first chance to compete in team drills. With his very first pass as a Steeler, Rodgers targeted Metcalf on a quick, 5-yard hitch. Inside linebacker Patrick Queen undercut the route for an interception. The crowd reacted loudly, partly in excitement and partly in disbelief at the inauspicious start to training camp. 'It's good to get that out of the way,' Rodgers said. 'Anybody who has watched me practice over the years — you like to try certain throws at certain times. Anybody that's watched me in games knows I've been pretty stellar at taking care of the football over the years.' To Rodgers' point, through 20 NFL seasons, he's thrown 503 touchdowns and 116 interceptions. According to Pro Football Reference, Rodgers' interception rate of 1.4 percent is tied for the NFL lead among players with a significant number of attempts. That said, Rodgers has thrown double-digit interceptions just four times in his career: his first season as a starter in 2008 (13), his third in 2010 (11) … and then the last two full seasons in which he's played 2022 (12) and 2024 (11). He also produced a career-low 90.5 passer rating last year and had the fourth-lowest completion percentage (63 percent) of his career as a starter. 'I'm going to throw some picks,' Rodgers said. 'But I'm going to throw some touchdowns, too.' Now look: Any play or stat this early in camp — with this small of a sample size, and in an unpadded environment — should be taken with a massive grain of salt. With that necessary disclaimer out of the way, Rodgers unofficially completed 6 of 12 passes over three 11-on-11 periods and one seven-on-seven segment, mostly finding success on underneath routes and checkdowns. He looked relatively mobile for his age and did have plenty of zip on the ball. Advertisement He also targeted Metcalf early and often. In addition to the interception, Rodgers threw out of Metcalf's reach on a vertical route during seven-on-seven, with Joey Porter Jr. in good coverage. A few plays later during the same period, Rodgers targeted Metcalf on a quick slant. The receiver outstretched his nearly 35-inch arms and got his fingers on the ball but couldn't reel it in. 'His release is unique,' Metcalf said of Rodgers' signature quick trigger. 'If it comes my way, I've got to catch it.' The first Aaron Rodgers-to-DK Metcalf completion of training camp — Mike DeFabo (@MikeDeFabo) July 24, 2025 Eventually, in the seven-on-seven segment, Rodgers did connect with Metcalf over the middle on a stab route, during which the receiver settled down over the middle. Both the QB and the receiver recognized that Wednesday was just Day 1 of a long process. Though they aren't reading too much into one practice, they acknowledged there's work to be done. 'It's going to be tough in the beginning, just like everything,' Metcalf said when asked about building chemistry. 'But just knowing I got his back and he has my back, we're always trying to work toward the same goal, and that's to win football games.' At his best, Rodgers has been one of the NFL's greats at throwing with timing and anticipation. Especially if the Steelers are going to lean into a quick passing game, as teams often do with older quarterbacks whose mobility might be in decline, it's imperative that receivers run routes exactly the way Rodgers expects. Metcalf said he's open to the collaborative process. 'I'm going to try to soak up as much knowledge as I can,' he said. 'I'm going to listen to everything that he says. Even the critiques he has on my game. I'm going to be willing and open to go searching for those answers from him, because he's had great receivers in his past. I'm just trying to be another one.' Advertisement Zooming out, Rodgers and Metcalf were two of the biggest pieces of general manager Omar Khan's headline-grabbing offseason of trades, transactions and maneuvers. Though the defense has been bolstered by the additions of Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey, the offense needs to take a larger step forward for the Steelers to achieve their objectives. Khan said Tuesday that while it's his job to look at the big picture and not mortgage the future, he's also 'building this team to win the Super Bowl this year.' 'I think most of the 32 teams would say something to that accord at this time of the year,' Rodgers said about the Steelers' chances of contending. 'But I think that there's really only six to eight that have a legitimate chance. Sometimes, it's 10 to 12, and there are teams that surprise you. But obviously, on paper, we're probably one of those 10 to 12.' (Photo of Aaron Rodgers, 8, and DK Metcalf: Gene J. Puskar / Associated Press)

49 Of The Tackiest Weddings I've Ever Seen
What's the point of this? Yeah, this ain't cute. Guns have no place at a wedding, IMO. Neither do bullets. Who wants a bullet wedding favor??? What would you even use this for? What is it with weddings and guns??? Seriously. It's weirdly common. That's one interesting Best Man invite. ...Whatever floats your boat, I guess. Trumpers are so unhinged. Why does he need to be a part of your wedding? I think I just threw up in my mouth a little. I like beer as much as the next person, but did you really have to advertise that on your wedding cake? I can't decide if this is about sexual domination or the husband being controlled by his wife, but either way, I hate it. Please don't make your wedding cake toppers sexual. I shouldn't have to say this. We get it, you smoke weed. But do you really need to incorporate weed into your wedding? There's really no "cute" way to ask for money, and TBH, it's cringey when people try. Because nothing says romance like a cake topper that suggests your hubby wants to run! Why would anyone want your garter??? Does the Confederate flag really belong at your wedding? I get wanting to save money, but seriously, it's the bare minimum to feed your guests. I hate this!!! If I saw this at a wedding, I would leave. It's not all about you! Camo has no place at a wedding. What kind of couple thinks a quote from Lolita is a romantic thing to include in their wedding favors? It really doesn't get more tacky than a 9/11 themed wedding. Though throwing JUUL PODS at the happy couple in place of rice is a close second. Trying to shame your guests into just giving you random cash is one thing, but doing it via a cute fake fish in a fish bowl is a whole new level of cringey. These may be the worst wedding shoes I have ever seen. What even is a "buck and doe-themed wedding"??? This couple also had a hunting-themed wedding, with bridesmaids pretending to be shot deer and being dragged into the venue by the groomsmen. Imagine being this obsessed with yourself. These are NOT appropriate cake toppers. Can't you take one day off from advertising your multiple MLMs? I can get past the monster truck, but I don't understand why anyone would want to get married in mud. This is just disgusting. This "bathroom" wasn't much better. Honestly, I'd be glad I didn't receive an invite. It doesn't get much more tacky than being too lazy to write real thank-you cards. It's okay if you can't afford elaborate displays, but this decor was pretty crappy (see what I did there?). Sorry, but I'm hardcore judging this bride who had the groomsmen walk down the aisle with signs of things her groom-to-be had called her in the past, including "Fiery Fox" and "Sexy Raspy." I hope this is a joke. Why would you want serial killer-themed centerpieces??? If you thought Kylie Jenner's Handmaid's Tale-themed birthday was bad, get ready for this wedding theme. Even worse? This couple literally had a COVID-themed wedding. If you're going to reuse decor from your first wedding, at least don't make it obvious. A wedding is not a place to put your fetish on display! And finally, I have no idea what the couple was going for with this cake.
