It's a move that grinds the gears of most Aussie motorists — when a driver tries to skip a long queue of traffic by sneaking down the shoulder of the road. But one driver's attempt to overtake two full lanes of traffic in Victoria quickly backfired when several strangers united to block his illegal shortcut. The incident occurred outside Melbourne Airport on Thursday, as the M2 merged into Sunbury Road and forced multiple lanes to converge into a single line. The driver of a white Toyota, fed up with the gridlock, pulled into the shoulder lane in a bold attempt to overtake the crawling traffic. But instead of zipping past the queue, they were quickly shut down by three other drivers who tried to block the shoulder lane and force them to wait like everybody else. The entire incident was captured on dashcam, with the dashcam owner at one point telling the driver "Don't be a f**king c***", as he helped block the Toyota. After pulling in front of the Toyota, the dashcam driver made sure to block the shoulder for as long as possible until the white sedan finally merged back into line. The footage has since been shared online — with Aussies commending the actions of the three vehicles. 'Not all heroes wear capes,' several people wrote, while others labelled them "legends". "This is fantastic," one man wrote. But it did make others wonder — what if he was rushing to the hospital or another emergency? What does the law say about driving on the shoulder? While it might feel satisfying to block a rule-breaker, it's worth knowing what the law actually says. In Victoria, it's illegal to drive in the emergency lane or road shoulder unless directed by police or road signage, or in very limited circumstances — such as when entering or leaving the road, avoiding an obstruction or obeying a traffic control device. Under rule 146 of the state's road rules, a driver on a multi-lane road must drive so the driver's vehicle is completely in a marked lane. Failure to do so could result in a $610 fine. Illegal camping continues to wreak havoc in popular tourist spots around the country, with many car parks being inundated with travellers and also Aussies who have been pushed out of their homes due to the housing crisis. Authorities continue to grapple with the social disruption and even lower supply of parking bays, and drivers are now being warned they could be at risk of being towed if they overstay their welcome at Horseshoe Beach in Newcastle, NSW. The decision comes weeks after reports of mounting rubbish, including needles, being found at the location. There have also been reports of vehicles being parked there for days. Transport for NSW, which oversees the car park, warned drivers of the crackdown in an attempt to improve the turnover rate of parking for the community. "Social issues were considered, however the main reason for implementing the new 4P and tow away area parking restrictions is to enable turnover of parking for the community," a spokesperson for Transport for NSW told Yahoo News. "The new parking restrictions may lead to less rubbish in the vicinity, however Transport is arranging a clean-up." Authorities say Horseshoe Beach Road was recently adapted to allow for towing, and any vehicle that stays for longer than four hours in the bays could be towed, with the rules coming into effect from Monday, August 4. However, towing will be enforced by the City of Newcastle Council and police. "Setting up full campsites, taking up two to three normal car spaces and staying there all day is a joke," the resident said. They add that "there is nothing more annoying than not being able to find a park on busy days when these campers are taking up 50+ car spots collectively". Councils continue to introduce parking restrictions and threaten fines in the wake of illegal camping, as more and more are caught sleeping overnight in car parks. The most recent incident occurred at Peregian Esplanade and Victory Park near Noosa Heads last week, with fines of $333 warned. Authorities also issued 31 campers fines during one weekend in Noosa in a one-month period, illustrating just how significant the problem has become. Some councils have even taken it one step further to deter campers from congregating around popular locations by restricting public amenities, like the Town of Cambridge council in Perth, who switched off the hot water in showers at City Beach.
