US marine jailed in Japan for attempted rape, choking woman in Okinawa
James Clayton, 22, who pleaded not guilty, was accused of choking and attempting to rape a woman in her 20s last year in Okinawa, according to Kyodo News and other local media.
The Naha District Court on Tuesday sentenced Clayton to seven years in jail for 'the crime of causing injury by attempting to have non-consensual sexual intercourse', a spokesman for the court told AFP.
Presiding judge Kazuhiko Obata described Clayton's behaviour as 'so dangerous that it could have threatened her life, and highly malicious,' Jiji Press reported.
Prosecutors had sought a 10-year prison term.
Clayton's lawyers argued that he had not used physical force against the woman but 'only hugged her and left', the Yomiuri Shimbun daily reported.
The defence is considering appealing the ruling, the reports said, citing Clayton's lawyer.
Relations between the US military personnel stationed in Okinawa and the local community have long been fraught.
Last year, 80 people connected to the US military were charged for various crimes committed on the subtropical Japanese island.
This included eight serious cases, such as robbery and non-consensual sexual acts, a police officer told AFP. The number is reportedly the highest in 30 years.
The 1995 gang-rape of a 12-year-old girl by three US soldiers prompted calls for a rethink of the 1960 pact allowing the United States to station its troops in Japan. — AFP

Fatal bullying of children has come into public spotlight recently following the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir in Sabah and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officers Training Unit (Palapes) trainee cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin. The family of tahfiz student Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman who was found dead in Kok Lanas, Kelantan in 2013 has also called for the case to be reopened. Five teenage girls are scheduled to be charged in the Children's Court in Kota Kinabalu this morning in connection with the bullying case of student Zara Qairina.

Umno Youth chief to face court charge this Friday over Facebook post allegedly disturbing public order
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) said yesterday that it would charge Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh over a Facebook post on his account, along with two other individuals. In a statement, the AGC said the decision followed an examination of investigation papers submitted by the police. 'Based on the testimony and evidence obtained, this department has decided to bring charges under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code against Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, Muhammad Hilman Idham and Siti Hajar Aflah Sharuddin,' it said. 'The statements made by these individuals were found to have disturbed public order or constituted improper use of network facilities or network services.' The AGC said all charges will be filed at the Magistrates' Court with the relevant local jurisdiction soon. It added that the statements in question were found to have disturbed public order or constituted improper use of network facilities or services. Section 505(b) handles those causing fear or alarm to the public, and to induce them to commit an offence against public order. If convicted, a person can be punished with a prison term up to two years, a fine, or both. Hilman is the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Youth chief, with his charge is believed to be over a video of him speaking at a July 29 protest in which he allegedly claimed the arrest of some Bersatu members was politically motivated. It is unsure which Facebook post is responsible for Dr Akmal's charge. Meanwhile, Chandrasegaran a/l Subramaniam will be charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988. Last week, Dr Akmal said he was called by the federal police to give his statement over the protest he led on the display of Jalur Gemilang in Kepala Batas, Penang. The AGC had previously warned Malaysians against vigilantism in cases involving the improper display of the Jalur Gemilang, amid furore over the Umno Youth protest. Dr Akmal has since posted on Facebook that he is abroad performing umrah, or the Muslim minor pilgrimage to Mecca, and will return early to face the charge at the Magistrate's Court in Bukit Mertajam this Friday.

AGC defends charge decision in Zara Qairina case
The Attorney-General's Chambers said an inquest would still be needed to determine the actual cause of Zara Qairina Mahathir's death. PETALING JAYA : The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has defended its decision on the charge against the five minors linked to the Zara Qairina Mahathir case. The AGC said the decision to prosecute the teenagers under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code, which covers harassment, was based on the evidence and facts gathered during investigations. 'This charge refers specifically to acts of bullying and is not linked to Zara's death,' it said in a statement today. The AGC also dismissed a suggestion by lawyers representing Zara's family that further probes or an inquest could later justify a more serious charge under Section 507D(2), saying this was 'speculative and not supported by accurate facts'. An inquest, it added, would still be needed to determine the actual cause of Zara's death. Lawyers acting for Zara's family had urged the AGC to postpone the charges against the five minors for purportedly bullying the Form 1 student. They said that the five minors should be charged under Section 507D(2), which criminalises causing someone to believe they would suffer harm. The offence carries up to 10 years in jail, a fine, or both. In contrast, Section 507C(1) provides for a maximum one year in jail, a fine, or both. The lawyers also argued that further investigations should be held, if needed, to uncover more evidence for the charges to be framed under Section 507D(2). Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu the following day. Her body was exhumed on Aug 9 to allow for a post-mortem amid allegations of bullying.
