Do you ever find yourself trying to catch your breath after walking up the stairs? If so, you definitely aren't alone. It's a phenomenon that frequently spawns questions on Reddit, with people wondering whether it's normal. Even those who are in good health and exercise regularly can find themselves winded when using the stairs. That's because, contrary to belief, struggling for breath when stair-climbing isn't always a sign that you're out of shape. In fact, it can happen to everyone -- even athletes who have dedicated their lives to fitness.
So, now we know that this isn't a fitness issue, how can you make it easier for you to walk up your stairs? There are a few options, starting with some exercises that you can do and lifestyle changes you can make to improve your endurance.
Why do I get winded when going upstairs?

The fancy medical term for what's happening when you get winded climbing stairs is "exertional intolerance." While approaching stairs, you're not warmed up -- your muscles are cold, your heart rate is low and your body is not ready to move suddenly. When you start climbing, you're essentially doing single-leg squats with some cardio mixed in, and your heart rate quickly skyrockets. Your body suddenly needs more oxygen -- hence the feeling of being winded.
Another reason why it affects you so strongly is that walking upstairs uses your fast-twitch muscles, which are used for explosive movements, and muscles like your glutes that you may not commonly train. If you're an endurance cardio nut like me, you're in great shape, but sustained exercise like this uses slow-twitch muscles. So, it won't transfer over super well to exercises like stair climbing.
If you've been hitting the gym regularly but the stairs are still giving you trouble, don't fret that you're not in good shape. There are plenty of other ways to measure your overall health and fitness, including your heart rate or other metrics like body composition and strength.

How to make going up the stairs easier

If getting out of breath while climbing stairs is really putting a damper on your life, there are steps you can take to lessen the annoyance. I'm not going to suggest that you jog in place for a moment to warm up before ascending a short staircase with your boss, but here are a few ways you can prepare yourself ahead of time.
First, incorporate stair-specific exercises into your workout routine to train your body for the stimulus. Exercises such as sprints, jumps or other explosive movements will help with the sudden exertion. To train your glutes and legs, try bodyweight exercises like squats and lunges.
If you're looking for exercises to do to improve endurance, consider the following:
Biking
Hiking
Brisk walking or running
Rowing
Swimming laps
If you smoke cigarettes, it's almost certainly contributing to your windedness. Although e-cigarettes are touted as a healthy alternative, preliminary studies suggest that vaping also damages your lungs.
What is VO2 max?
Used to test aerobic endurance or cardiovascular fitness, VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen you can utilize during exercise. It is measured in milliliters of oxygen consumed in 1 minute, per kilogram of body weight (mL/kg/min).
VO2 max is measured with a mask and heart rate monitor that are hooked up to a treadmill or stationary bike. Because of this, you will need proper equipment to get an accurate measure of your VO2 max. If you think this is a measurement you can benefit from, especially if you're working on your endurance while climbing stairs, consult your doctor for their opinion. There may be VO2 max testing at a health center or gym near you.
When to call your doctor
If you think your windedness is out of the range of normal, call your doctor.

If you're debating whether or not to call a medical professional, you're better safe than sorry. One major warning sign to look out for is chest pain that comes on when you get winded -- it could be a sign of heart disease or a coronary blockage. The doctor will do a stress test, and if you do have a blockage, there's a simple procedure to fix it. Swollen feet and ankles or coughing are other signs there may be something wrong with your heart.
Another reason to seek medical help is if getting winded from basic activities is affecting your daily life -- for example, if you avoid walking short distances. Or, if the situation doesn't get better once you start exercising more, it may be time to consult a doctor or physical therapist.

Sometimes, it feels like science is on a mission to upset me. Not only does it turn out that upper body workouts (which I hate) might be key to better running, but apparently, cardio should be done after weights if you want to build muscle, pivotal to healthy ageing. Until about seven weeks ago, I was trying (and failing) to adopt the advice. I had previously been running before my strength training sessions every time I hit the gym – but the prospect of even a five-minute jog after Bulgarian split squats felt impossible. To be honest, though, the issues began long before that attempted change. Even when I was cramming cardio first in my hour-long, pre-work gym sessions, I didn't feel I was jogging for long enough to really improve my pace or endurance. And my lifts struggled, despite my (beloved) creatine supplementation. So, I stopped doing them in the same session altogether, in favour of separate sessions on the same day – and even though it doubles the amount of workouts on some days, I've been absolutely amazed by how much better I perform both at the squat rack and on the road. I split my running from my lifting altogether Rather than puffing desperately away on a treadmill after lifting (before giving up at the two-minute mark), I decided to try weightlifting before work and then jogging after it. Most days I only do one or the other, but I've been amazed to discover that even on the days when I do both, although it's double the load, I find both far easier – and it ends up taking about the same amount of time. My PBs for both have improved, too (not to mention the fact that my step count skyrocketed). According to Dr Suzanne Wylie, GP and medical adviser for IQdoctor, I'm not alone in my experience. 'It is quite common for people to notice better results when they separate strength training and cardiovascular exercise, rather than performing both in the same session,' she shared. 'By splitting your training into different times of day or alternating days entirely, you allow each type of workout to be performed when your body and nervous system are fresh, which can lead to greater strength gains, improved cardiovascular endurance, and less risk of injury.' Alex Kirkup-Lee, a personal trainer and writer at Gymshark, agrees. 'Ideally, you should split your cardio and weight training sessions, leaving four to six hours between workouts,' she explained, though she wouldn't recommend doing two intense sessions in a day. 'Balance your sessions with one higher intensity workout and one lower intensity, such as an interval run, and then light accessory work later, for example, core training... This allows for better recovery between each exercise type and maximises performance during both disciplines,' she recommended. So... is it ever OK to do cardio and weights in the same session? In short, yes. Kirkup-Lee explained that 'there might be a lot of reasons you want to do cardio and weights in one session, and it's important to note that it's also OK to do this'. Bear in mind, too, that I don't have kids and work from home – as the PT points out, 'many of us don't have time to train twice or even once a day, so it's best to not get too caught up in these finer details'. If you are going to try fitting both into a single session, either opt for a group class (which sometimes combines both) or, Kirkup-Lee said, go for weights before cardio. 'Lifting carries a higher risk of injury, and you don't want to pre-fatigue your muscles with cardio. Numerous studies have also proven that resistance training before cardio improves muscle strength and power,' she said. But if, like me, you find combining the two exhausting, try splitting them (ensuring you don't do two very hardcore sessions in one day) and see how you feel. For me, it's been life-changing. Slowly rotate the kettlebell in a circle around your head, moving clockwise for six to eight reps. Switch directions and perform the same number of counterclockwise rotations. When I'm consistent with this move, I can feel my shoulders loosen up and notice it's easier to maintain good posture at my desk. Sitting upright for long stretches feels more comfortable, and I'm less likely to slump or hunch by mid-afternoon. It also makes simple daily tasks, like reaching for items on a shelf or carrying a laptop bag, feel easier on my shoulders. As it's a low-impact move, halos are also perfect for warming up the upper body before a larger strength session or as an easy recovery exercise. Doing a few controlled rotations before a press, a row, or even a casual household task helps prevent tension from building up throughout the day. What I especially like about the kettlebell halo is that it's not about heavy lifting or building a certain physique. I use it purely to support my upper body strength and shoulder mobility, rather than chasing aesthetics. That means I don't worry about gradually increasing the weight or lifting heavier each week. The focus is on control, range of motion, and keeping my shoulders healthy, which makes it low-pressure and easy to fit into my daily routine. New study finds coffee is good for you, but there's a catch

Coffee drinking has been studied for decades as researchers have aimed to answer one burning question: Is it good for you? Or is it better to stick to joyless drinks like, you know, tap water and mint tea? While there have been cases for just about every argument, one recently published study in The Journal of Nutrition just added another check in the 'healthy' column. Of course, there's a catch. You have to drink your coffee in a specific way. For the study, researchers at Tufts University analyzed the coffee-drinking habits of 46,332 Americans from 1999 to 2018. They found that drinking a cup of coffee each day has some major effects in terms of lowering mortality rates. One cup of joe per day was linked to a 16% lower risk of death, not just related to cardiovascular disease, which has been well-documented, but from any cause. More coffee is better, too—but not too much more. Drinking two to three cups per day showed a 17% lower risk of mortality. More coffee than that didn't offer any additional health benefits. However, these benefits didn't apply to all coffee drinkers across the board. The benefits were most pronounced in those who drank theirs sans cream and sugar (or with a very little amount of sugar). The ones who added cream and sugar had the same rates of all-cause mortality as those who tended toward non-coffee drinks. Essentially, the more cream and sugar added, the lower the benefits. 'Coffee is among the most-consumed beverages in the world, and with nearly half of American adults reporting drinking at least one cup per day, it's important for us to know what it might mean for health,' said Fang Fang Zhang, senior author of the study and a professor at Tufts. 'The health benefits of coffee might be attributable to its bioactive compounds, but our results suggest that the addition of sugar and saturated fat may reduce the mortality benefits.' Given that there is so much research around coffee, we always have to take findings with a grain of salt (and sans sweetener), but the good news does seem to be adding up for regular coffee drinkers. A study earlier this year similarly found lower rates of premature death for morning coffee drinkers. Another published in June 2025 found that coffee drinking is linked to healthy aging, particularly in women.
