Shane Steichen hints at preseason plans for Colts' QBs Anthony Richardson, Daniel Jones

USA Today3 days ago
A starter for the Colts' first preseason game hasn't been announced yet, but Shane Steichen hinted at what the preseason plan could look like.
We don't know the full details of the Indianapolis Colts' Week 1 preseason plan at quarterback, but Shane Steichen hinted at what things could look like.
When speaking to the media after Sunday's practice, Steichen wasn't ready to reveal who will be starting against Baltimore on Thursday; he first wants to discuss that with Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson, but he did mention that both would play.
Along with that, from the sounds of it, whoever starts in Week 1 of the preseason will see the majority of the snaps in that game, while in Week 2, the other will then start and take the bulk of the snaps.
"They'll play a good amount," Steichen said of Jones and Richardson's playing time in the preseason. "One will play a good amount this game and the next one will probably play a good amount in the next game."
Richardson had strung together multiple positive performances in practices over the last week before taking a step back on Saturday. However, bad days are going to happen; what's important is being able to rebound, which Richardson did during Sunday's practice.
Overall, Richardson has been much more efficient on the shorter to intermediate throws, which was an area of emphasis for him this offseason.
'Everything's cleaner right now,' Steichen said after Thursday's practice, via Colts.com. 'He's playing at a high level, he's making good decisions with the football, taking the completions when needed, so it's been really good to see.'
Jones has had his ups and downs as well, but was "solid" in Sunday's practice, as Nate Atkins of the Indy Star put it. However, Atkins also added that he would like to see Jones "rip one" as well. Jake Arthur of Horseshoe Huddle echoed similar sentiments, posting that Jones "could use some more flash."
While Jones has been relatively efficient in his career, completing 64% of his throws, he and the Giants' offense struggled to generate explosive plays.
As Steichen has said on numerous occasions, consistency is what he's searching for at the position. That doesn't only revolve around completion percentage, but everything that goes into playing quarterback.
While every practice performance matters, these preseason games are going to carry more weight when it's decision time.
Prior to Thursday's preseason game with Baltimore, the Ravens are hosting the Colts for a joint practice on Tuesday.

Jerry Jones 'Absolutely Not' Confident Micah Parsons Will Play Week 1 Against Eagles

The contract stalemate between Micah Parsons and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones shows no signs of resolution after the All-Pro linebacker requested a trade. Now, it's looking increasingly unlikely that Parsons will suit up for the Cowboys' season opener against defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Speaking to reporters, including ESPN's Todd Archer, Jones indicated he lacks confidence that Parsons will play Week 1. 'No, absolutely not. A big part of that is his decision. How would I know that?' Jones said, adding that he feels 'urgent' to get a deal done. Parsons requested a trade last Friday as contract talks broke down. The four-time Pro Bowler is in the final year of his rookie deal, earning $21.324 million. Since the trade request, Parsons has remained at the facility, participating in walk-throughs but sitting out drills. When asked if Parsons and his representation need to reach out, Jones offered a cryptic response. 'Y'all are getting what's in the mind or what's in the said. This is a good time. He's subject matter. What it is is what it is. We'll work through it, or we will not work through it.' Jones's failure to secure an extension with Parsons will prove costly. Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end T.J. Watt recently became the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league with a three-year, $123 million extension, averaging $41 million annually. That's where negotiations must start if Parsons is to remain in Dallas. 7 Ravens with the most to prove in preseason opener vs. the Colts

Baltimore will be without Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. With kickoff fast approaching, we're looking at 7 Ravens players with the most to prove in the preseason opener. After weeks of waiting, the Baltimore Ravens will play a preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts at M&T Bank Stadium. With the two teams partaking in a spirited joint practice session on Tuesday, the Ravens are expected to rest key starters and contributors. Baltimore will be without Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. With kickoff fast approaching, we're looking at 7 Ravens players with the most to prove in the preseason opener. WR Devontez Walker After contributing primarily on special teams as a rookie, Walker has flashed speed and big-play abilities all summer long. With the big three of Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman, and DeAndre Hopkins likely to sit, Thursday night offers a massive opportunity for Walker to carve out his role with Cooper Rush throwing the passes. K Tyler Loop Loop has performed so well that Baltimore waived undrafted rookie kicker John Hoyland. During this past Sunday's open practice, Loop was 12-for-12 and made a 60-yard field goal. Now he'll need to do it under the lights on a bigger stage. RB Keaton Mitchell The Ravens have been high on Mitchell since they brought him in as an undrafted free agent in 2023, and he's regained his rookie burst. With Derrick Henry out for Thursday night, Mitchell has a chance to solidify his role in Todd Monken's offense. DB Sanoussi Kane Kyle Hamilton's absence will create more reps for second-year safety Sanoussi Kane, who has been solid in the competition to be the No. 3 safety behind Hamilton and Malaki Starks. WR Dayton Wade Wade spent the entire 2024 season on Baltimore's practice squad, but he offers big-play ability and will look to build on what he displayed last summer, including a 56-yard touchdown catch against the Falcons. DB T.J. Tampa Tampa spent most of last season injured and saw action in just seven games due to an ankle injury, but offers size and has had a strong training camp. QB Devin Leary Baltimore didn't select a quarterback in the NFL draft and signed no signal callers in the undrafted free agent class. The Ravens have an MVP as QB1 and a solid backup in Cooper Rush. Baltimore did select a quarterback in last year's NFL Draft, Devin Leary, out of Kentucky in the sixth round, but it didn't work out too well. Leary was cut in the preseason and then signed to the practice squad. If the Ravens carry two quarterbacks on the roster, Leary could be released and signed to the practice squad again.

Indianapolis Colts' 2024 draft pick continues to make plays in training camp

A Colts' 2024 early round draft pick continues to make plays in training camp and did so in the team's joint practice vs. the Ravens. We are now past the point of saying that Indianapolis Colts' second-year wide receiver AD Mitchell has put together some nice practices. Given Mitchell's performance over the last week-plus, making plays in practice has now become the norm for him. The dropped passes that plagued him during the first few training camp practices are now a distant memory. The high-level play from Mitchell continued during the Colts' joint practice with Baltimore. As noted by the Indy Star's Nate Atkins in his practice takeaways article, Mitchell won both of his one-on-one drills, the first coming against Nate Wiggins and the second reps against Chidobe Awuzie. During the team portion of the practice, Mitchell provided the Colts' quarterbacks with a consistent target both on short-area throws and on plays down the sidelines. 'It's great," Shane Steichen said of Mitchell's play, via Horseshoe Huddle. "You want to see that growth, like I've been saying. His playmaking ability and his route running ability is phenomenal. And to see the plays he's been making over the last few weeks is really good for us, really good for him. You want to see that jump from last year, and he continues to grow and make strides. We got to continue that consistency there.' With Mitchell's combination of speed and route running, the ability to create separation has been evident since he arrived in Indianapolis. However, during his rookie season, Mitchell was far too inconsistent, working through drops and mistimed or off routes. But in Year 2, after having a full season in Steichen's offense and a full offseason to work on his craft, Mitchell is playing with a newfound confidence, and with that, the results are following. "Now we in Year 2 now, and I just feel more comfortable," Mitchell said after Saturday's practice via the Indy Star. Whether it's in the meeting rooms, walkthroughs. I'm not focused on what the play is, what do I have to do? I'm focused on how I'm doing it and why I'm doing it, and what I'm doing." It's a crowded receiver room around Mitchell, with the Colts also having Michael Pittman, Josh Downs, and Alec Pierce. But Mitchell adds a different element to that room and is someone who can impact all levels of the field, which then further opens up the playbook for Steichen. As Mitchell continues to make opportunities in practice, more opportunities in games will come with that.
