TOKYO -- A Netflix series featuring mischievous imp-like character Kuromi created by Japan's Sanrio will launch later this month, in the latest push by the company behind Hello Kitty to build up its brands' international following.
The animated series titled "My Melody & Kuromi" is the Japanese entertainment company's latest collaboration with the streaming service as it tries to extend and deepen its characters' global fan base.

Kayokyoku Bar Spotlight Shimbashi; Bring the Spotlight Back to When We Were Young
As the voice of popular J-pop singer Momoe Yamaguchi plays in the bar, customers with glasses in their hands hum along and sway their shoulders to the music. At Kayokyoku Bar Spotlight Shimbashi in Tokyo's Shimbashi district, visitors can listen to Showa-era songs from the '70s and '80s on vinyl, and fans are enjoying a reunion with their favorite songs. The shelves are lined with 2,100 extended play and long-playing records, and if a customer hands in a record he or she wants to listen to or writes a request on a card, the DJ will drop the needle on each one in turn. A man in his early 60s who works at a nearby company requested 'Soleil,' an album by Takako Okamura. 'This is the song that soothed me after coming home exhausted as a rookie,' he monthly request rankings are posted on the wall up to No. 10, in the style of 'The Best Ten,' a famous Japanese music TV program of yesteryear. After Ando's best friend died suddenly about 25 years ago, his friend's wife told Ando that 'listening to the tapes Ando-kun dubbed for him when he was in junior high and high school and talking about the old days was a source of emotional healing for him.' Ando opened the bar in 2011 with the hope of creating a place where he could play nostalgic songs to ease people's minds during difficult times, and where people could talk about their problems on a daily basis. 'I want to provide a space where people can talk about the old days without worrying about others,' said Ando. 'Demon Slayer' tops ¥10 bil at Japan box office in record 8 days
The latest animated film adaptation of the popular manga "Demon Slayer" surpassed 10 billion yen ($67.7 million) at the Japanese box office in eight days, setting a domestic record, its distributor said Monday. The latest film, "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba 'Infinity Castle -- Part 1: Akaza Returns'" sold more than 9.10 million tickets and earned 12.87 billion yen in box office revenue in the 10 days since its release on July 18, Aniplex Inc. said. The film had already set a record by earning 5.52 billion yen in its first three days, eclipsing the 4.62 billion yen recorded by the previous Demon Slayer film released in 2020. The manga, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2016 to 2020, tells the story of Tanjiro Kamado, an adolescent boy who battles human-eating demons while searching for a cure for his sister, who has turned into one. © KYODO

‘Secrets of the Kimono' Showcased in Kyoto; Museum Exhibit Features Early Modern Pieces, Related Items
KYOTO — An exhibition featuring about 260 kimono and related materials recently opened at the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, in the city's Sakyo Ward. Titled 'Secrets of the Kimono: The Advent of Yuzen Dyeing,' the exhibition focuses on the beauty of the traditional Japanese garb. Kimono masterpieces from the early modern period onward will be showcased through Sept. 15, featuring pieces from the collection of Chiso Holdings Co., a renowned kimono firm known for its Kyo-yuzen, a Kyoto-style dyeing technique. Chiso is providing special support to the exhibition, which is organized in part by The Yomiuri Shimbun. Visitors can observe masterpieces such as elegant kosode short-sleeved kimono patterned all over the cloth and 'Yuzen Kimono, 'Glorious Blossoms'' (1985) by Kako Moriguchi, housed in the museum. Moriguchi is a Yuzen-dyeing artist designated as a living national treasure. Also on display are kimono pattern books, believed to have set past kimono trends, dyeing and weaving designs as well as various scraps of Yuzen-dyed fabric, highlighting the creativity of the artisans. The exhibited items are periodically replaced. 'I was amazed at how much time and energy went into making a single kimono. It's truly art,' said a 77-year-old woman from Kawasaki. Admission is ¥2,000 for adults, ¥1,300 for university students and ¥600 for high school students.
