British man, 25, goes missing while backpacking in Malaysia - as frantic mother 'just wants him home'

Daily Mail2 days ago

A man on a solo tour of South East Asia has gone missing while backpacking as his family prepares to fly out to Malaysia to search for him.
Jordan Johnson-Doyle, 25, has not been heard from since Tuesday, May 27, with his mother saying she feels 'numb' and 'just wants to bring him home'.
Family and friends spent days frantically trying to get in touch with him by phone, email and social media before his phone went dead in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, May 30.
His last known location was the Healy Mac's Irish Bar in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, at around 8pm on Tuesday, May 27, when he sent his best friend Owen a photograph of the pub's quiz night poster.
His mother Leanne Burnett said: 'I have been been feeling just sick, numb. I just want to get over there, find him and bring him home. I want him to know we're looking for him and we're coming to get him.
'I have no idea what has happened. All I know is something is really wrong for him not to contact anybody. I know what he's like and he knows how worried everyone gets at home, that's why he checks in all the time.
'If he was to lose his phone and laptop, if someone had stolen that off him, he knows my number by heart and he would contact.
'He would go to the nearest hotel to use the phone, or go to an internet café. He'd find a way to get hold of us.'
On Wednesday morning, Leanne said she checked the 'Find My iPhone' tracking service for the location of her son's mobile phone, and saw it was located at a residential flat block near the bar.
She said: 'I speak to Jordan every day and I have him on find my iPhone, so I always have a look before I go to bed and when I wake in the morning.
'But when I woke up on the Wednesday morning, his Find My iPhone had not updated. It just said 'last seen 11 hours ago'.
'It means it's either out of signal or out of range. And this was the last place it had a signal. It was a block of flats in that same area, literally down the road from the bar.
'I carried on tracking him throughout the day, trying to phone him as well. I couldn't get hold of him on Facebook or Instagram. If he does lose his phone, he usually messages me on Facebook or Instagram.
'But it just kept on showing at this location, and the 'time last seen' kept going up and up, and now the phone has gone off completely. It's run out of battery.'
Jordan's phone went dead on Friday, May 30, three days after he was last seen.
Leanne said: 'I'm a really worried mum because he's working away. So he knows if I can't contact him, he will contact me. I did get a bit anxious and started checking Find My iPhone a bit more and checking Instagram, but just nothing.
'I didn't hear from him on Tuesday and by Wednesday I couldn't get his location. Then his phone went off, and that's when I contacted his best friend Owen, and he said he hadn't heard from him since Tuesday and was getting worried himself. I called the police straight away.'
Jordan, a software engineer, had been backpacking around the Mediterranean and South East Asia for around a year and a half while working remotely for an American company.
He arrived in Malaysia on May 17 after previously visiting Vietnam, and is believed to have been staying at the Robertson Residences at Bukit, Kuala Lumpur.
Leanne, 44 said she last spoke to him on Monday, May 26, and their conversation had been the usual chit-chat about their working days.
She said: 'He seemed absolutely fine and normal. Nothing stood out whatsoever. We always end the phone call with 'love long time' and that was the very last thing we said to each other.'
As well as reporting Jordan missing to Merseyside Police, Leanne also contacted the British Consulate and police in Malaysia.
She said the family had also tried to contact the hotel where Jordan is believed to have been staying, but struggled due to the language barrier.
His workplace has also been informed.
She said: 'It has been awful. But all his friends and family have been rallying round.
'We've pieced together the last pictures and memes he's been sanding, we've got his messages, so we're building up a timeline of his movements.
'His dad is travelling out there today, and me, his brother, best friends and his stepdad are going out tomorrow.'
Tearfully, she begged members of the public to share her son's missing persons appeal far and wide.
She said: 'Jordan was really shy in high school, but since he has got his job and turned into a man he's become really outgoing, so funny, very intelligent.
'He's got a massive work ethic and is very loving. He looks after his brother. His brother looks up to him so much and he's loved by everyone, all his friends and family.
'We're very worried. My friends and family are constantly here. We've got a group set up. I've got family posting all over Facebook and whatever Malaysian sites we can find. We've got others contacting our MP. We're just doing everything we can.
'Please share anything. If anybody has seen him, please share it far and wide. If anyone has heard from him, seen him, seen him active on social media - anything. We just need to find him and bring him home.'
Merseyside Police has been approached for comment. Leanne said the police incident reference for anyone reporting a sighting to Merseyside Police was 5198 of May 30, 2025.

What we know about new Madeleine McCann searches in Portugal

Almost two decades since Madeleine McCann disappeared on holiday, new searches have begun in Portugal. The then three-year-old vanished on 3 May 2007 after her parents left her asleep in their holiday apartment in Praia da Luz. Since then, hers has become one of the highest-profile missing person cases in the world, with British, Portuguese and European police forces involved in the investigation. On Tuesday, German police began their latest probe, covering a large patch of land near the home of their prime suspect and the McCanns' holiday apartment. Here is everything we know about the new investigation. Where are police searching? Search teams are scouring more than 20 plots of land east of Praia da Luz, between the Ocean Club holiday resort and the cottage where German authorities' prime suspect Christian B lived. Operational tents have been set up in the nearby village of Atalaia. Sky News' correspondent Dan Whitehead, who is at the scene, described the area as "rough, wild scrubland", which makes it "difficult territory to search". It sits on the edge of the Ocean Club's golf course and a new housing estate, he added, and is a 10-minute drive from where the McCanns' holiday apartment was. Officers at the scene have not given much away but said they will aim to search "multiple areas a day" and intend to continue until at least Friday 6 June. Local media reports claim two wells will be looked at, with others saying groundworks, ruins, and water storage tanks will also be searched. Radar equipment that can search beneath the ground will reportedly be used. Why is it happening now? It is not clear what has prompted the latest search and whether any new evidence has come to light. Authorities are likely to be searching for a body - or any sign that Madeleine McCann was taken there after she was abducted. Speaking from the scene, Sky's Dan Whitehead said police are "running out of time", as Christian B is due to be released from prison in September. Who is in charge of the investigation? The current probe was initiated by German police, who in 2020 identified German sex offender Christian B as a prime suspect in the McCann disappearance. Law enforcement officials in Braunschweig, where he is currently in prison, confirmed the operation had begun early on Tuesday. "Criminal proceedings are currently under way in Portugal as part of the investigation into the Madeleine McCann case," their statement said. "These measures are being implemented through mutual legal assistance by the Portuguese law enforcement authorities with the support of officers from the Federal Criminal Police Office." In line with the German statement, Portuguese police said they are assisting, having been issued with a "European investigation order" by the German authorities. The Metropolitan Police, which as well as being the force that presides over London, manages nationwide and counter-terrorism investigations, said they are "aware" of the searches - but not involved. "We will support our international colleagues if necessary," the force said. Who is Christian B? Christian B, who cannot be fully identified due to German privacy laws, is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for the 2005 rape of an elderly woman in the same resort Madeleine disappeared from two years later. He was arrested in Italy in 2018 and is due to be released from prison in September. He has not been formally indicted or charged with any offence related to the McCann case and denies any involvement. In 2022, Portuguese police also named him an 'arguido' in their investigation into Madeleine's disappearance, which makes him a formal suspect and gives him the right to silence and appropriate legal representation. He moved to Portugal in 1995 after serving a two-year prison sentence in Germany for sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl in 1994. He lived in a cottage in Praia da Luz. Soon after the world's media descended on the resort in 2007, he moved back to Germany. Police have previously claimed he made a 30-minute call from the same area just an hour before Madeleine disappeared. He is alleged to have confessed on two occasions to kidnapping and sexually abusing the toddler - once to a friend in a German bar in 2017 and again to his prison cellmate in 2020. There was no suggestion in either alleged confession that he killed her, and he continues to deny any involvement. When did the last search take place? German police were last in Portugal on the McCann case in 2023. They spent a week searching the Barragem do Arade reservoir, around 30 miles from Praia da Luz, after reports of a "tip-off". Christian B is reported to have visited the reservoir regularly, describing it as "paradise". It was previously scoured by divers in 2008 after Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia ordered them to look into claims Madeleine McCann's body was there. Ultimately, the search came to nothing.

Woman left with glass in her face after jealous ex smashed window pane

More info A jealous ex smashed a window at the home of his former partner, leaving her with glass in her face and a nasty cut. Andrew Owen couldn't accept the break-up of his relationship, which had been ended by his former partner after two and a half years, Caernarfon Crown Court heard. Owen, of Maes Llewelyn, Aberffraw, wrongly believed she had a man at her home and was phoning and making threats to her, said Oliver King, acting for the prosecution. He then followed that up by going round to her home in Llangefni, Anglesey, on January 25 this year, where he banged on the front door and smashed a glass pane, which left his ex with a nasty cut. "Because of her proximity to the door, when the glass shattered, fragments made contact with her face and a fragment became embedded in her face," said Mr King. The police were called and Owen, who appeared from prison via video-link today (Tuesday), was arrested. The 41-year-old admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and damaging property. The victim told how the incident had scared her and her son, for whom it had a lasting impact on. She said she didn't want to see Owen again. The court heard Owen had eight convictions for 13 offences including disorderly behaviour, damaging property, threatening behaviour and ABH. Defending, Dafydd Parry, said the defendant had already been in custody for a significant time following the incident and suggested a suspended sentence for Owen, with requirements, because there was a realistic chance of rehabilitation. Judge Timothy Petts said he agreed on balance, imposing a 12 month sentence, suspended for 18 months, a six months alcohol treatment requirement, 20 rehabilitation activity days, six months GPs trail monitoring and a 10 year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim. He must also pay a statutory surcharge. Judge Timothy Petts said: "It was not only a very scary incident for her, but for her son who saw what was going on." Portuguese and German police renew search for Madeleine McCann

A new search for Madeleine McCann is under way in Portugal with police officers gathering a few miles from where the British toddler was last seen in 2007. Portuguese and German police are carrying out the search 18 years after the three-year-old disappeared from the resort of Praia da Luz while her parents were having dinner out, leaving her sleeping in a nearby room with her toddler twin siblings. Police vehicles were seen about 3.5 miles (5.5km) from the resort on Tuesday, in the Atalaia area, where the Sun newspaper reported that search teams were expected to use radar equipment that could scan beneath the ground. The BBC said four vans carrying German officers were seen driving down a road leading to the sea, along with Portuguese police and a fire engine. Journalists were being kept away from the search site amid intense international media scrutiny of the operation. TV footage showed two Portuguese police officers guarding the end to a narrow lane that leads through an area of fields and scrubland with a few houses and a vineyard. The search is being carried out at the request of the German federal police as they look for evidence that could implicate the prime suspect, Christian Brueckner, who is in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005. He is due to be released from jail in September if no further charges are brought. Investigators will reportedly look where trenches were dug near the resort at the time of Madeleine's disappearance, at wells, ruins and water tanks. There are plans to examine 21 pieces of land. Brueckner was cleared by a German court in October last year of unrelated sexual offences alleged to have taken place in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. About 30 German police officers, including forensic experts, are expected to take part in the search along with Portuguese officers, with the activity due to last until Friday. The Metropolitan police, while aware of the operation, will not be present. German investigators and Portuguese officers last carried out searches in the country in 2023, near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, about 30 miles from Praia da Luz. Brueckner, who spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017, had photographs and videos of himself near the reservoir. Ulrich Oppold, a journalist from German broadcaster RTL, visited Brueckner in prison in Germany. Brueckner told him that if he got out of jail the thing he was most looking forward to was a steak with a beer. However, he refused to answer any questions relating to Madeleine after discussions with his lawyers. Brueckner told the journalist that if he did get out of jail he would have to lie low as he was so well known, describing himself as 'bekannt wie ein bunter Hund' – which literally translated is 'as well known as a colourful dog'. The Barragem do Arade reservoir was previously searched in 2008, when Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia paid for specialist divers to search it after he claimed to have been tipped off by criminal contacts that Madeleine's body was there. British police were later given permission to examine scrubland near where she vanished in 2014. Last month, Madeleine's family, from Rothley in Leicestershire, marked the 18th anniversary of her disappearance, describing her as 'beautiful and unique' before her 22nd birthday, and expressing their determination to keep searching. A statement from her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, and the family said: 'The years appear to be passing even more quickly and whilst we have no significant news to share, our determination to 'leave no stone unturned' is unwavering. We will do our utmost to achieve this.' In April, UK ministers approved more than £100,000 in additional funding for Scotland Yard detectives investigating Madeleine's disappearance.
