Patriots' Kyle Dugger, Anfernee Jennings reportedly available via trade

With Kyle Dugger lining up with second-teamers and Anfernee Jennings playing in the second half of Saturday's preseason game, the writing has been on the wall that both may not be members of the New England Patriots for long. We're now getting some confirmation the team is looking to move both defensive veterans. The Patriots have brought up both players in trade talks this summer, according to a report by Andrew Callahan of The Boston Herald on Tuesday. Dugger, whom the team discussed in talks more recently, has emerged as the likeliest of the two to move ahead of the regular season. The veteran safety signed a four-year, $58 million contract (which included $32.5 million in guaranteed money) with the Patriots last April, but that was under the Jerod Mayo coaching staff. He's fallen on the team's depth chart this summer and was playing with the scout-team defense during Monday's practice. Dugger has played the second half in both of New England's preseason games, and was on the field through the final play in Saturday's win over the Minnesota Vikings. He intercepted the final throw of the game in the end zone to preserve the New England victory, but also tried to do too much on the play and nearly fumbled away the win. Dugger was lucky officials ruled him down before his fumble, which let the Pats hold on for the 20-12 win. If the Patriots don't see Dugger as a fit in Mike Vrabel and Terrell Williams' defense, the team would be much better off trading him than outright releasing him. The Patriots would be hit with $14.25 million in dead money toward the cap if Dugger is released, compared to the $4.5 million hit (and over $10 million savings off the salary cap) that would come if he's traded. Jennings also played into the second half Saturday, but the edge rusher may have saved his bacon with three sacks on the afternoon. There are still questions about his fit in Vrabel and Williams' defense, though Callahan reported the team's exploratory talks about a Jennings trade happened earlier this summer. Patriots VP of player personnel Eliot Wolf said earlier this week he's had talks with the 31 other teams about potential trades, though many assumed it was to add to the roster via a blockbuster swing. It sounds like some of those calls were gauging interest in Dugger ahead of the season. Second-year receiver Ja'Lynn Polk is another player on a short leash in New England this summer. He hasn't done much to earn his spot, but at least one other team is getting ready to pounce if the Patriots cut ties with Polk. According to Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan, the Pittsburgh Steelers have "done some homework" on Polk, since he'll likely be cut by New England. Fillipponi threw out the possibility of Pittsburgh sending a seventh-round pick to the Patriots in return for Polk before he potentially hits waivers. The Patriots drafted Polk in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but he caught just 12 of the 33 passes that went his way during his rookie season. He was battling for a roster spot this summer, but suffered an injury in New England's preseason opener against the Washington Commanders.

Two of the NFL's worst quarterback situations are resolved … yay

There are few things better in the NFL than a good old-fashioned quarterback battle. Two star signal-callers vying to start at the game's most important position. Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Steve Young and Joe Montana. Two men enter, one man leaves. It's Thunderdome. Unless it's Blunderdome, because the quarterbacks vying to start for that NFL team all stink. Advertisement Sadly, that's the state of the quarterback 'battles' fans have been subjected to in 2025. Three craptastic competitions between signal-callers who have as much chance of leading an NFL team to the postseason as Sid Luckman and Otto Graham. Both have been dead for decades. In New Orleans, fans are still waiting to see if the Saints will lose by 30 with Spencer 'Soon to Be Playing in the CFL' Rattler under center or lose by 30 with 36-year-old rookie Tyler Shough calling the shots. OK, he's 26. Fine. I'm sorry. He also had one season with 2,000 passing yards in seven collegiate seasons. And yes, I said seven. However, in recent days the crapetitions in Cleveland and Indianapolis have been resolved. For the Browns, it was a four-way race between Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. For the Colts, 2023 fourth overall pick Anthony Richardson was trying to hold off free-agent acquisition Daniel Jones. So, what does it mean for the fantasy value of the players on those teams? Got your blanket? Things are about to get dark. The Cleveland Browns essentially had two choices. See what the franchise had in Pickett, Gabriel and Sanders, or trot out Flacco and win just enough games to screw up their draft slot. So, of course, they went with the geezer, because Cleveland. 'He earned it,' head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters. 'And I understand with the injuries how that may look. That's really not the case here. Joe performed really well both in practice, in the joint practices, in the meeting room — you name it — in the walk-through. … We have a standard for that position regardless of who's in there. Practice, games, how we operate, what we believe in — we have a very, very high standard. Obviously, Joe having done it at a high level, has done it here as well, that lends itself to confidence in himself and confidence in his teammates.' Advertisement Cleveland has standards? Since when? It's short-sighted, wrong-headed dumba**ery — so, standard operating procedure at the Factory of Sadness. To be completely (whatever) fair, on some level, the decision may have been inevitable, if only because Flacco is the only quarterback who has stayed healthy throughout the summer — largely because he spent the whole time knitting a sweater on the sidelines. It has kittens on it. It may also be temporary — at some point, the Browns will have to see what the young quarterbacks who remain on the roster can do ahead of a 2026 draft in which the team has two first-rounders. But to open the year, it will be Flacco time. Goodie. Pass the vodka. To be clear, Cleveland's offensive line isn't the strength it once was. PFF's Zoltán Buday ranked the unit 27th in the league — a problem for a quarterback who was last mobile approximately never. The Cleveland run game is also a question mark, with second-round rookie Quinshon Judkins still unsigned. This team will face negative game scripts as regularly as the lady in a Metamucil commercial hits the head. Fitting that it's orange and brown. Get it? Orange and brown? You're welcome. And as much as it pains me to say it, if the Browns are going to be playing catch-up and throwing it all over the field, then Flacco is the best option from a fantasy perspective. I feel so dirty now. Pickett has an arm of al dente fettuccine. Gabriel is four and a half feet tall. And, at this point, Mel Kiper Jr. is the only person confident that Sanders is the real deal. Flacco wasn't good last year in Indianapolis — he threw for 103 fewer yards per game than during Cleveland's surprise playoff run in 2023. But the 40-year-old has started 191 games, won a Super Bowl and (gag) is the best arm talent on the team — even at 57. Advertisement Jerry Jeudy did most of the damage during his career year in 2024 with Jameis Winston under center. Locked in as Cleveland's No. 1 wide receiver, Jeudy's WR32 ADP and seventh-round price tag remain a solid fantasy value now. Cedric Tillman is still the same late-round dart throw he always was, but the chances he pays off weren't hurt by Flacco winning the job — Tillman's a vertical receiver. He needed a gunslinger to hit his fantasy ceiling. The biggest winner is tight end David Njoku. From Week 9 on in 2023 (partly with Flacco starting in Cleveland), there wasn't a higher-scoring tight end in fantasy football than the 29-year-old. Njoku is a value at ADP — at least until the Browns make a change under center and ruin everything (again). Remember when the Colts used that top-five pick on Anthony Richardson two years ago? Pepperidge Farm remembers — although Colts general manager Chris Ballard sure as hell wishes he could forget. Hope he rented. May be moving soon. As was already mentioned, the Colts brought in Jones this offseason to compete for the starting job, and on Tuesday, head coach Shane Steichen (who also should freshen up his résumé) told reporters that the seventh-year veteran had won the job — for the entire year. 'He's our starting quarterback for the season,' Steichen said. 'I don't want to have a quick leash on that. I feel confident in his abilities. When they both came in, I made it very clear that this is going to be a battle, and they're going to compete for the job. And like I said, I'm going to make the decision I feel is best for the football team. I think it's everything, right? The operation, the communication in the huddle, the checks, getting guys on the same page. The consistency of all that, obviously, is going to play a big factor in this.' Advertisement It's not exactly surprising. Athletic and strong-armed as Richardson may be, he has one small flaw — the inability to throw a forward pass accurately. He can rip a ball 70 yards on a rope, but he has no earthly idea where it will land. He's a Jugs machine on a trampoline. A completion percentage of 47% isn't getting it done in the Arena League, let alone the NFL. Still, it's a damning indictment that this was never really a competition — because 'Danny Nickels' (he's half-price now) isn't good either. Jones' playoff run as a rookie seems like a mirage — a fever dream born of late-night White Castles and Rumple Minze. He has completed 64.1% of his career passes and has a plus-23 touchdown to interception ratio, but he's also 20 games under .500 as a starter and has a career passer rating under 85. There's a reason why every dynasty manager with a share of a Colts player not named Anthony Richardson was rooting for Jones here — and it rhymes with 'Richardson no throw ball good.' Of course, Jones ain't Dan Marino. Or Dan Fouts. Or Dan Conner. There were 16 quarterbacks in the NFL last year who averaged over 7.0 air yards per attempt — including Derek freaking Carr. Care to guess how many times Jones has hit that benchmark? Zero. Nada. Never. That lack of downfield passing isn't great news for Alec Pierce — he's not averaging 22-plus yards a catch again in 2025. It's also not ideal for Josh Downs, although his ability to rack up yards after the catch might help mitigate things somewhat. It's also not exactly party time for Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, who should see no shortage of eight-man fronts until Jones shows he can make opponents pay for stacking the box. That's not really news, though. We knew the Colts would have bad quarterback play in 2025. We just didn't know if it would be Jones' wormburners or Richardson throwing to 18-foot-tall targets. Advertisement Gonna be a fun year. Wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and rookie tight end Tyler Warren are the biggest beneficiaries. Both have an ADP outside the top 100. Both should see plenty of short and intermediate routes over the middle of the field. And if Jones has any success this season, that's where it will happen. 2026 college football national title odds: Texas enters season as favorite, but field appears wide open

Five of the six national champions from the 2018-23 seasons went undefeated, marking an era filled with dominant teams. Last year's debut of the 12-team College Football Playoff featured a two-loss Ohio State team as national champion, which could signal that being a dominant champion is now more difficult. Advertisement The volume and ease of transfers, NIL spending and a playoff format that is more forgiving of regular-season blemishes appear to have balanced the playing field just enough compared to the recent juggernauts of 2019 LSU and 2020 Alabama. That balance is playing out in the betting odds to win the national title this season. Texas is favored on BetMGM with +450 odds. The Longhorns are No. 1 in both major preseason polls, so their position at the top of the odds board lines up, but those odds do not display much confidence in Texas as the favorite. The +450 odds imply the Longhorns have roughly an 18 percent chance of winning the national title. That's the betting way of saying this appears to be a wide-open season. Seven teams have odds of +1000 (1o-to-1) or shorter. That means the gap between Texas at the top and Alabama in the seventh spot on the odds board is relatively small. Beyond the fact that 12 teams get into the Playoff, lowering the bar to get into the postseason and giving more teams (like Ohio State last year) a chance to win it all, a lot of top programs enter this season with major question marks, especially at quarterback. Texas is getting some love for having Arch Manning, but his recruiting profile and famous last name are still carrying a lot of weight for a quarterback with only 95 pass attempts at the college level, and barely half of those came against power conference opponents. Manning is also the preseason favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, but that doesn't mean there isn't some level of uncertainty about how he will perform. Other premier programs like Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia and Notre Dame are also going with first-year starters at quarterback. Despite that, those teams are all in the top eight of the preseason AP Top 25. Inexperience at quarterback isn't necessarily a detriment to winning a national title. In recent years, Mac Jones (2020 Alabama), Trevor Lawrence (2018 Clemson), Jake Coker (2015 Alabama), J.T. Barrett/Cardale Jones (2014 Ohio State), Jameis Winston (2013 Florida State), A.J. McCarron (2011 Alabama) and Cam Newton (2010 Auburn) were first-year Division I starters to win national titles (and you can include Tua Tagovailoa on that list, even though he didn't start most of the season). Teams can win it all with a first-year starter, but having a lot of top programs with new faces at quarterback does make the season harder to project. That's why the betting odds are relatively balanced among the top contenders. Advertisement Defending champion Ohio State just named Julian Sayin, a redshirt freshman and a five-star recruit out of high school, its starter for the season opener against Texas. Headline writers who like puns will be thrilled to be able to play around with QBs named Arch and Sayin, but that game should have an early impact on national title odds with the Buckeyes just below Texas at +525. Georgia and Penn State follow OSU at +700. The Nittany Lions made the semifinals last year and return quarterback Drew Allar, while Georgia will break in Gunner Stockton. Next up are Oregon and Clemson at +900. Clemson is more in the Penn State category with Cade Klubnik back at quarterback. Oregon has UCLA transfer Dante Moore stepping in after he backed up Dillon Gabriel last season. Alabama also has a relative unknown at quarterback in Ty Simpson, who was named the starter a week ago. Simpson will be tasked with getting Alabama back into national title contention after the Crimson Tide missed the 12-team playoff last season. Last year's championship game loser Notre Dame is +1200. The Fighting Irish haven't even named a starting QB yet, but remain in the top 10 of both the preseason polls and in the betting odds. The Irish are a bit lower in the betting odds than the polls. ND is fifth in the Coaches' Poll and sixth in the AP Top 25, but only eighth on BetMGM's odds board to win the national title. LSU is the last team before a solid dropoff in the odds. The Tigers are +1400 with returning quarterback Garrett Nussmeier guiding the optimism around Brian Kelly's team. Betting/odds links in this article are provided by partners of The Athletic.
