Egypt's Al-Mashat discusses economic resilience at Saudi Arabia's AlUla conference
Egypt's Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, is participating in the 'AlUla' Conference for Emerging Market Economies in Saudi Arabia. The conference, organised by the Saudi Ministry of Finance and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), began on Sunday, and will continue for two days under the theme 'Building Resilience in a Changing World.'
The annual high-level conference aims to foster dialogue and cooperation to address the economic challenges facing emerging markets amid structural transformations of the global economy. It brings together high-level decision-makers, economic figures, and experts from around the world.
The conference is attended by economists and decision-makers from governments and international financial institutions. Attendees include Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund; Mohammed Al-Jadaan, Minister of Finance of Saudi Arabia; Ali bin Ahmed Al-Kuwari, Minister of Finance of Qatar; Anton Silvanov, Minister of Finance of Russia; Faisal Al-Ibrahim, Minister of Economy and Planning of Saudi Arabia; Jihad Azour, Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department of the International Monetary Fund; and Jin Li Chun, President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. Other attendees include ministers of economy, planning, and finance, central bank governors of multiple countries, and heads of multilateral development banks.
The 'AlUla' Conference represents a prominent global platform for addressing the impact of global economic changes on growth and development in emerging countries.

Al-Mashat discusses economic and investment ties with UK ambassador
Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat met with British Ambassador to Egypt Gareth Bayley to discuss ways to boost economic and investment relations and diversify financing mechanisms from British financial institutions for the private sector. The meeting focused on ongoing cooperation between the two countries in the field of sustainable green transformation. Mashat highlighted the strong economic ties between Egypt and the United Kingdom, both at the governmental level and in terms of private sector relations with British financial institutions. She emphasized Egypt's commitment to further developing bilateral relations across various sectors. Regarding the Development Policy Financing (DPF) program, Mashat commended the UK's role in supporting Egypt's structural reforms through the program, which is being implemented in partnership with the World Bank. She also discussed cooperation under Egypt's national platform for the 'NWFE' program, which aims to drive climate investments in water, food, energy, and sustainable transport, in addition to preparations for the COP30 climate conference scheduled to be held in Brazil. On empowering the private sector, Mashat noted that the UK has played an active role in launching the 'Hafez' platform, which enhances financial and technical support for both local and foreign private sector entities. The platform offers a range of initiatives and programs, including the Climate Finance Accelerator (CFA) and the A2D program, which supports clean energy research and development. Mashat pointed out that trade relations between Egypt and the UK have grown significantly in recent years, as reflected in trade figures. 'Bilateral trade reached approximately £4.7 billion in 2024, indicating the strength of the economic partnership,' according to her. She highlighted that Egypt is now the 48th largest trading partner of the UK globally and that the UK ranks as one of Egypt's largest foreign investors. On expanding the scope of British financial institutions' programs, the two sides discussed broadening the partnership in developmental cooperation programs and diversifying innovative financing sources for both public and private sectors, including mechanisms to finance small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Mashat invited the British ambassador to participate in an upcoming conference on development financing for private sector empowerment, organized by the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation on Sunday. The Egyptian-British relationship is multifaceted, with many British companies investing in Egypt. In 2020, the Egyptian planning ministry and the UK's Department for International Development issued a joint statement to strengthen economic ties between the two countries as part of the UK-Africa Investment Summit. British financial institutions, including the British International Investment (BII), UK Export Finance, the British-Egyptian Business Association (BEBA) and the Egyptian-British Chamber of Commerce, have previously participated in the ministry's 'Strengthening Engagement with the Business Community for Innovation and Development' meetings, aimed at deepening relations between private sector companies and financial institutions. BII's investments in Egypt currently total $850 million across more than 70 companies.

Following Iranian-Israeli military escalation in the region, Egypt will increase strategic stockpile of key commodities
File- Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly PM CAIRO – 13 June 2025: Following the Israeli military strikes against Iran on Friday, Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly affirmed that the situation is being closely monitored. The Prime Minister added that coordination is underway between Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt Hassan Abdullah and Minister of Finance and Ahmed Kouchouk to increase the strategic stockpile of key commodities. Madbouly also said that a meeting will be held with the Ministers of Electricity and Petroleum to assess potential scenarios and implications resulting from the military developments in the region. Egypt strongly condemned the military strikes carried out by the Israeli army against Iran in the early hours of June 13, 2025. 'These attacks represent a blatant and extremely dangerous escalation in the region, a clear violation of international law and the United Nations Charter, and a direct threat to both regional and international peace and security,' the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated. 'Egypt is following these rapid developments with deep concern and firmly denounces this unjustified act, which will only exacerbate the crisis and risks triggering a broader regional conflict. Such escalation could have unprecedented consequences for the region's security and stability, endangering its peoples and threatening to plunge the entire Middle East into widespread chaos,' the statement continued. Egypt reiterated its position that the crises facing the region cannot be resolved through military means, but rather through political and peaceful solutions. The Ministry stressed that the use of force will not bring security to any country, including Israel. True security, it emphasized, can only be achieved by respecting state sovereignty, preserving the unity and territorial integrity of nations, delivering justice, and ending the Israeli occupation of Arab lands. Israel has just carried out airstrikes on several Iranian cities, inclduing nuclear sites, in the early hours of June 13, 2025, killing dozens of Iranian nuclear scientists and military leaders. The Israeli army said in a statement on Friday that it luanhced a 'preemptive strike against Iran's Nuclear Program' with more than 200 Israeli Air Force fighter jets, operating with precise intelligence from the IDF Intelligence Directorate, conducted coordinated strikes on over 100 targets across Iran. Israeli media outlets reported that the Israeli operation against Iran could last for weeks amid Iranian threat of a severe retaliation. Iranian military leaders killed in the Israeli airstrikes include Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Commander of the Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters of the Iranian General Staff, Major General Gholam Ali Rashid. The Khatam al Anbiya Headquarters is a Unified Combatant Command Headquarters of the Iranian Armed Forces, operating under the direct command of the General Staff, is responsible for planning and coordinating joint military operations across all branches of Iran's armed forces. Also, Hossein Salami, the commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was killed in the airstrikes. Besides killing civilians inlcuding women and children, six nuclear sceintists were killed in the israeli airstrike; Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Friday that the scientists killed included Fereydoun Abbasi, former head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, a prominent physicist and president of Islamic Azad University. Several world countries, inlcuding, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanon, and Oman- the broker of the US/Iranian talks on the Iranian nucleary program- condemned the Israeli attacks, saying these blatant attacks violate the interntaional laws. Additionally, several countries suspended their flights to and from Iran and Israel.

African Development Bank greenlights $184.1M to back Africa's largest solar power facility in Egypt
Cairo – June 12, 2025: The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group has approved a financing package of up to $184.1 million to back the development of the Obelisk solar project in southern Egypt. Once completed, the project will stand as Africa's largest solar power facility, with a capacity of 1 gigawatt. It will also feature a 200 MWh battery energy storage system to enhance grid stability and ensure a more consistent flow of renewable energy. To be located in Qena Governorate, the Obelisk project involves the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of a large-scale solar plant integrated with energy storage. The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company will act as the sole off-taker under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement. The total development cost exceeds $590 million, with the African Development Bank contributing $125.5 million from its ordinary capital resources. An additional $20 million will come from the Bank-managed Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA), $18.6 million from the Canada-African Development Bank Climate Fund, and $20 million from the Clean Technology Fund under the Climate Investment Funds umbrella. Further funding is expected from a consortium of development finance institutions. The project has been awarded a "Golden License" under Egypt's Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy (NWFE) initiative, reflecting its strategic significance to the country's energy goals. It is part of a broader energy transition effort to install 10 GW of renewable capacity and phase out 5 GW of fossil fuel generation by 2030. 'The Obelisk solar project is another important milestone for Egypt under the energy pillar of the NWFE program which has since its launch in November 2022 at COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh delivered 4.2 GW of privately financed renewable energy investments, worth about $4 billion, with the support of partners such as the Africa Development Bank,' said Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation. Once operational—targeted for the third quarter of 2026—the plant will generate approximately 2,772 GWh of clean energy annually. The integrated battery system will enable the grid to meet peak evening demand using solar power, while also mitigating fluctuations in generation. Environmental benefits include an estimated annual reduction of one million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Employment impact is also a key feature, with the construction phase expected to create around 4,000 jobs and 50 permanent positions during operations. Special emphasis will be placed on the inclusion of women and youth in the workforce. 'Obelisk is another landmark development under NWFE that leverages on Egypt's and the African Development Bank's leadership as well as commitment to harnessing the country's renewable energy to enhance the resilience of the country's energy supply to meet its fast-growing energy demand sustainably,' said Kevin Kariuki, AfDB Vice President for Power, Energy, Climate, and Green Growth. The initiative also received strong endorsement from international partners. 'Canada is proud to support solar energy development in Egypt. This initiative is a meaningful step toward enhancing energy security and stability, with direct benefits for the Egyptian people,' said Ulric Shannon, Ambassador of Canada to Egypt. The project is closely aligned with the African Development Bank's Ten-Year Strategy, the New Deal on Energy for Africa, and Egypt's Country Strategy Paper. It also supports SEFA's mission to catalyze renewable energy investment and help African nations transition toward low-carbon power systems. 'This project exploits the abundant renewable energy potential in Africa and demonstrates how strong partnerships and innovative solutions contribute to balancing three core objectives in the energy sector, namely energy security, affordability, and sustainable economic development,' said Wale Shonibare, Director of Energy Financial Solutions, Policy, and Regulation at AfDB. 'It has high potential for replicability across the continent.'
