Malaysia Has Capacity To Capture Rapidly Evolving Space Economy Industry -- MOSTI

LANGKAWI, May 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has the capacity to capture the rapidly evolving space economy industry, with the country's large local talent pool, ample resources, good infrastructure and technology.
Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) deputy secretary-general (Technology Development) Datuk Dr Mohd Nor Azman Hassan said Malaysia's geography is very suitable for the country to play an important or significant portion of the space economy.
'If you want to launch a rocket launcher for satellites, Malaysia's equatorial location presents a huge advantage in terms of sustainable rocket launch, for example.
'Because when you launch it from the equatorial line of the globe, of the world, you essentially use less resources and fuel and also time that translates to more money and cost savings,' he told Bernama after delivering the opening speech at the Space Conference – Space Economy Revolution: Trends, Technologies And Strategies event today.
The half-day conference was held on the sidelines of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) 2025 exhibition and successfully gathered 150 participants, including senior officers from Southeast Asian space agencies, industry players, academia, ministries, departments and agencies, and international organisations.
During the event, Mohd Nor Azman also witnessed the exchange of letters of intent (LOIs) between UZMA Bhd and Global Systemes Asia Sdn Bhd; SpaceIn Sdn Bhd and Global Systemes Asia Sdn Bhd; International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Ocullospace Sdn Bhd; the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) and Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA); and MYSA and Ocullospace Sdn Bhd.
The conference, organised by Global Exhibitions & Conferences Sdn Bhd (GEC) and supported by MYSA, served as a strategic platform, bringing together experts from the space sector to address challenges at the national, regional, and international levels, among others.
Also present at the event were GEC strategy advisor Datuk Nonee Ashirin Mohd Radzi and MYSA director-general Datuk Azlikamil Napiah.

Embalo, who arrived yesterday, is making his first visit to Malaysia since assuming office in February 2020. Upon his arrival at 9am, he was warmly received by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the venue. The ceremony began with the playing of the national anthems of Guinea-Bissau and Malaysia. Embalo then inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 members of the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (Ceremonial), led by Major Mohamad Waqiyudin Abd Rahman. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, senior government officials and diplomats. Following the ceremonial protocols, President Embalo signed the guest book before proceeding to a bilateral meeting with Anwar, where discussions focused on trade and investment, agriculture, education and capacity building. Both leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest. Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974. Bilateral ties between the two nations remain cordial, underpinned by a shared commitment to cooperation on bilateral and multilateral platforms, including the United Nations (UN), the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Chief Minister to officiate Asean Travel Exchange June 19

Kota Kinabalu: Preparations are underway for Sabah to host the two-day Asean Travel Exchange (ATE) 2025 this month, says State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew. Basically, ATE 2025 is a premier Business 2 Business (B2B) networking event in Sabah, connecting travel trade sellers and regional buyers to foster partnerships and collaborations on June 19 and 20. The Minister said the State Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) will host this inaugural mega tourism event at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC). Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has been invited to officiate at the opening ceremony on June 19. Liew said KePKAS supports the proposal for four organisations to establish strategic partnership with Sabah Tourism Board (STB) in organising ATE 2025. They are the Asean Tourism Association (Aseanta), Federation of Asean Travel Associations (Fata), Malaysian Association of Tour & Travel Agents (Matta), and AirAsia Group. Asean has 10 member countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. For ATE 2025, the target audience will be made up of tour operators, travel agents, hoteliers, homestay operators, product owners, and decision-makers from the industry stakeholders. 'As we gear up for the upcoming event, I have been informed by the President of Fata (Datuk Tan Kok Liang) that 354 delegates from 17 countries have already confirmed their participation. They comprise 125 sellers and 229 buyers,' said Liew after a courtesy call by a delegation from the organisers, recently. According to Tan, seller countries include Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, and Cambodia, with Malaysia leading the list at 88 sellers. 'On the buyers' side, top participating countries include the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and Thailand. This strong regional presence underscores growing international interest in Malaysia's tourism offerings, particularly in Sabah, which continues to gain traction as a vibrant and strategic tourism hub in the region,' he said in his briefing for the Minister. Guinea-Bissau ties a strategic gateway into Africa, says Anwar
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim describes Malaysia's ties with Guinea-Bissau as a strategic gateway for expanding the nation's presence across the African continent. It positions the West African republic as a vital entry point for trade, investment and diplomatic engagement, he added. Speaking at a joint press conference on Wednesday (June 4) with the republic's President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who is on a historic three-day official visit to Malaysia, Anwar said the growing rapport between the nations marks a turning point in Malaysia's approach towards Africa. Embalo's visit is the first-ever by a head of state from Guinea-Bissau to Malaysia. While acknowledging that past ties had been low-key, the Prime Minister said the renewed engagement reflects a shared ambition to forge stronger ties in diverse sectors. "President Embalo has a vision to engage Malaysia not just bilaterally, but as a bridge into Asean,' he said, reaffirming Malaysia's commitment to inclusive diplomacy anchored under Asean centrality. Anwar said that as a trading nation, Malaysia values partnerships based on mutual trust and shared inspirations, and Embalo's proactive stance complements the nation's foreign policy principles. "Our policy is to engage and befriend all countries. President Embalo's stance aligns well with this principle. We are extremely glad that he has taken the initiative to forge a new relationship with Malaysia based on mutual trust and affinity,' he said. Embalo, in turn, hailed Malaysia as a "sister country' and expressed confidence in the potential of a strong and enduring partnership. "I believe that, from today, we are not only connected by heart, but also ready to work closely on many fronts,' he said, asserting Guinea-Bissau's intention to learn from Malaysia's experience and best practices in various fields, including education, healthcare and industrial development.
