With this strategic addition, Condé Nast's full Middle East portfolio now comprises WIRED Middle East, Architectural Digest Middle East (AD), Condé Nast Traveller Middle East, GQ Middle East and Vogue Arabia.
Originally launched in 2019 in the region under a licensee agreement, WIRED Middle East now transitions to full ownership under Condé Nast Middle East, marking a significant milestone in the brand's journey in the region. As the Middle East cements its status as a global hub for innovation and future-facing industries, WIRED Middle East will serve as Condé Nast's digital-first platform for technology, science and culture, telling the region's most important stories and connecting them to global conversations about how emerging technologies are reshaping our world.

Hailing from a seafaring family, Heston Saldanha joined the merchant navy in India, but found that life on the seas was not his true calling. He quit his job in 1999 and decided to pursue his passion in sales instead. 'My entire family works in the merchant navy. Coming from that industry and deciding to take up a job on land was quite challenging in terms of going against the conventional way of thinking,' he says. 'Always follow your passion. I was fortunate to pursue what I liked doing, which is meeting people and talking. Whatever I've achieved today is purely because of my own conviction and following my passion.' Mr Saldanha, who is from the Indian city of Mumbai, initially took up a corporate sales post with Hutchison Max. He moved to Dubai in 2000 working with business conglomerate Al Futtaim. 'I decided to work in Dubai for a year to make money, but there's been no looking back since,' says the 51-year-old, who is now general manager of Sonova Consumer Hearing Middle East. He worked for Al Futtaim for 10 years and then joined audio equipment manufacturer Sennheiser to set up their consumer division in 2011. After 12 years with Sennheiser, at the end of 2021, he set up the consumer business for Sonova. Mr Saldanha's academic credentials include a postgraduate diploma in management with a focus on marketing from the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies and a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from St Xavier's College, Mumbai. He lives with his wife and daughter in Muraqqabat, Deira, and their two sons are studying in the US and UK. Did wealth feature in your childhood? What did you learn from it? I come from a seafaring family, so money was available and our house always had foreign goods. But one of the things that struck me at a very young age was my father's sacrifices, such as sailing for six to nine months at a stretch. This helped me learn the value of money. What was your first job and how much did it pay? When I was in college in Mumbai, my parents were quite conservative when it came to money. But I needed money to party and spend, so I took up a job with a company to sell marker pens at Nariman Point (the city's business district) and they paid good commission. I earned around 25 Indian rupees ($0.29) for every packet I sold. That was the first time I learnt to sell in a non-educated way. When you enjoy what you're doing, it brings the best out of you. Any early financial jolts? Yes, when I left the merchant navy, everyone asked me why, because it was a lucrative job. As a cadet then, I used to earn around 30,000 rupees. My mother asked me what I planned to do next and how I would take care of my life and my family in the future. It was a jolt knowing that my decision would have a financial implication, of not knowing what I'm going to do next. It was quite an awakening. How do you grow your wealth? I come from an old-school outlook on investing. I started investing in property, land and fixed deposits in India and then slowly moved to mutual funds. Are you a spender or a saver? I'm more of a wise spender and a good saver. If you spend wisely, you can save. I primarily spend on my kids. I have given them the best education and then let them take it forward. I would call it a good investment since I haven't taken any loans to educate my kids. Have you been wise with money? Yes, seeing my dad work in the merchant navy taught me to value money. I was never a materialistic person. For me, it's not about driving the best car or doing things to impress others. I'd probably like to impress myself and be appreciated by my family. What has been your best investment? Properties and land in Mumbai and Goa, since they have nearly tripled in value since purchase. Any cherished purchases? The calling of the sea is always present in my life. While I was on a holiday in Cyprus with my family, one of the things that caught my attention was a sea-facing apartment. One of the properties I bought in Goa is beautiful and offers a full sea view. That's a cherished purchase because it's a holiday home I can always visit with a friend or family to relax. How do you feel about money? As long as you have control over money, there's nothing that can go wrong. You have to learn to control money and not vice versa. I tell my kids not to look at what they can earn but how they can value that money instead. Any financial advice for your younger self? I should have adopted a more millennial way of investing, such as in stocks, probably six or seven years ago. But I have no regrets. Any key financial milestones? Having both my kids study abroad are bigger financial milestones to me than driving the best car. I can see the fruits of my labour put into their education without the help of any loans. These hold a higher value in life to me. What are your financial goals? To retire early and live off some of my investments.

A permit and licence is required to fly a drone legally in Dubai. Sanad Academy is the United Arab Emirate's first RPA (Remotely Piloted Aircraft) training and certification specialists endorsed by the Dubai Civil Aviation authority. It is responsible to train, test and certify drone operators and drones in UAE with DCAA Endorsement. 'We are teaching people how to fly in accordance with the laws of the UAE,' said Ahmad Al Hamadi, a trainer at Sanad. 'We can show how the aircraft work and how they are operated. They are relatively easy to use, but they need responsible pilots. 'Pilots have to be mature. They are given a map of where they can and can't fly in the UAE and we make these points clear in the lectures we give. 'You cannot fly a drone without registration under any circumstances.' Larger drones are harder to fly, and have a different response to location control. There are no brakes in the air, so the larger drones have more power. The Sanad Academy has a designated area to fly off the Al Ain Road near Skydive Dubai to show pilots how to fly responsibly. 'As UAS technology becomes mainstream, it is important to build wider awareness on how to integrate it into commerce and our personal lives,' said Major General Abdulla Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief, Dubai Police. 'Operators must undergo proper training and certification to ensure safety and compliance. 'Dubai's airspace will undoubtedly experience increased traffic as UAS innovations become commonplace, the Forum allows commercial users to learn of best practice applications to implement UAS safely and legally, while benefitting a whole range of industries.'

Time flies so fast. In a few months, I will have been in the UAE as an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) for two decades. Like life itself, there have been ups and downs, but they haven't stopped me from growing and continuing to learn every single day, despite being far away from home. Being an OFW is both difficult and fulfilling. Here are six life lessons I've learnt over the years that have helped me stay strong and positive. 1. Protect your mental health Yes, loneliness, homesickness and burnout are real and common. Even after all these years in Dubai, I still experience homesickness. I try to overcome it by making sure I go home every year to my beloved hometown Cebu, and spend time with my family, relatives and friends – even just for a short while. If not, I take short holidays elsewhere or enjoy local staycations here in the UAE to pause and recharge. For me, life isn't all about work – you must find balance or you'll eventually reach burnout. Build a support system, whether it's with your partner or friends. If you're social, join community groups. To sum it up: Take breaks, talk to someone and never ignore your emotional needs. Always protect your mental health at all costs. Learn to take care of yourself first. 2. Save and invest early Earning in a foreign currency is a blessing, but it won't last forever. In Dubai, temptation is everywhere. Many fall into the trap of overspending or constantly sending money home without saving. Live within your means. Don't spend what you don't have. Budget smartly, save and invest – whether in property, mutual funds, bonds or business ventures. These are essential for long-term security. I even have the old-school habit of saving in a piggy bank in addition to my actual bank accounts. I now have my own house in the Philippines and every time I visit, I pat myself on the back and say: 'Well done.' It may sound like a cliche, but always save for the rainy days. Our time as expatriates is temporary, so we must spend our hard-earned money wisely. 3. Set boundaries and learn to say 'no' Never feel guilty about saying 'no' nor afraid to set financial boundaries. Saying yes to every request can leave you with nothing. There's nothing wrong with helping families back home, but do so within your means. Don't send everything you earn and end up with nothing for yourself. I always advocate helping wisely – give a fishing rod, not fish every day. I believe constantly giving money can create overdependence, or worse, encourage laziness. 4. Never stop learning To keep growing, and earning, you must never stop learning. Skills open doors, but continuous learning keeps you relevant. Consider learning a new language, earning certifications, or upskilling in your field to get better jobs or promotions. Also, learn about financial literacy – it's just as important as your paycheck. 5. Don't forget your roots I sometimes hear fellow Filipinos say they don't want to return home and would rather stay abroad, and I respect that. But never badmouth or look down on your own country. Success abroad becomes even more meaningful when you stay grounded. Stay connected with your culture and values. Don't let pride, comparison or materialism define your identity. The Philippines isn't perfect, and neither is any other country. But love it anyway, because that's where you came from. As for me, I will always be proud to be a Filipino – and I wouldn't trade that for any other citizenship. 6. Plan for retirement and reintegration I've been an OFW for two decades now, and I'm also not getting any younger. I'm at a point where I'm seriously thinking about retirement. My goal is to retire early, to enjoy life while I still can. As early as now, I'm already planning my exit strategy. Think about what you want to do once you're back home – whether it's starting a business, working part-time online or just simply retiring. Prepare for that chapter of your life now. And part of that preparation is reintegrating slowly. I admit, after so many years abroad, I'm no longer familiar with many things in Cebu – from people I used to know, relatives, friends, even the environment. So, whenever I go home for vacation, I make an effort to reconnect and reacquaint myself with the place I will always call home.
