CPI(M) MP opposes railways' move to surrender funds for projects in Kerala
In separate letters addressed to Vaishnaw and the Railway Board chairman, Brittas has expressed strong objection to a proposal submitted by the Southern Railway through a letter dated May 14 to surrender a substantial portion of the funds allocated in the budget for the Financial Year 2025-26 for the Angamali-Sabarimala and Tirunavaya-Guruvayur railway lines.
He has urged for immediate intervention to discard the Southern Railway's recommendation and ensure continued financial support for these crucial projects in the southern state.
"These projects, envisaged decades ago, remain unfinished due to persistent institutional apathy, despite their strategic, economic, and socio-cultural significance," Brittas said in his letter addressed to Vaishnaw.
He termed the move a blatant continuation of the long-standing neglect of Kerala's railway infrastructure and emphasised that the Angamali-Sabarimala line is of national significance given the magnitude of the Sabarimala pilgrimage, while the Tirunavaya-Guruvayur line is vital for improving connectivity in northern Kerala.
He pointed out that the Southern Railway has also proposed surrendering funds for projects in Tamil Nadu, revealing a broader pattern of bureaucratic disregard for long-standing railway demands in south India.
"The decision to surrender funds, ironically justified by citing a 'frozen' status, amounts to a perpetuation of neglect rather than an attempt at rectification. It is pertinent to note that the very status of these projects as 'frozen' is symptomatic of the broader pattern of railway discrimination against Kerala, where critical demands are either delayed or denied," the Left leader said.
He requested the minister to issue directions to the board to reject the Southern Railway's recommendations in this regard and instruct the authorities concerned to ensure the continuation, acceleration and proper funding of these long-pending projects.
"Kerala cannot be expected to wait indefinitely for basic rail infrastructure," he said.

Kolkata, Aug 17 (UNI) Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has invited West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to attend the inauguration of three metro projects in Kolkata, scheduled to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 22. In a letter dated August 14, Vaishnaw requested the chief minister to 'grace the occasion' at Jessore Road metro station, where the inauguration ceremony will be held. The state government is yet to confirm whether Banerjee will be present. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has questioned the timing of the event, alleging that long-pending projects are being unveiled with an eye on next year's Assembly polls. The state BJP, however, dismissed the charge, blaming the state government for land acquisition hurdles that stalled several projects. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said, 'Forty-three railway projects in Bengal have been delayed due to lack of cooperation from the state government. The CM's presence at the inauguration would be desirable.' The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation general secretary, Dipankar Bhattacharya, on Sunday requested Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for his personal intervention and 'amicable resolution of the issues in consultation with the sanitation workers and their union' days after the police cleared the protesters camped in front of the Ripon Buildings. CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby slams Naidu's silence on resettlement of Polavaram-displaced
Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] general secretary M.A. Baby on Sunday (August 17) expressed his dismay over the silence on the part of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Members of Parliament from the NDA in Andhra Pradesh on the Resettlement and Rehabilitation (R&R) of the displaced families of the Polavaram project. Mr. Baby and CPI(M) MP John Brittas on Sunday concluded their two-day field visit to the Polavaram project submergence area, where they took stock of the implementation of the R&R component. The duo inspected the R&R colonies and project-affected villages along the banks of rivers Godavari and Sabari in Y. Ramavaram, Rekhapalli, Yetapaka Mandals in the Chintoor Agency of Alluri Sitarama Raju district. Addressing the affected families at Ramavaram in V.R. Puram Mandal, Mr. Baby said the party was not against Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's vision to develop the capital city of Amaravati, but disapproved of his silence about the Polavaram-displaced and R&R component. 'The Members of Parliament of the previous three terms (2014, 2019 and 2024) represented by the TDP and the YSRCP never raised their voice for the Polavaram R&R in Parliament. All of them failed to address the concerns of the Polavaram-displaced,' said Mr. Baby. He promised to return with an action plan to lead the fight for the resettlement and rehabilitation of the Polavaram-displaced, as guaranteed by the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. 'On the ground, the nexus between the bureaucracy and public representatives is reflected in the execution of the R&R component. An inquiry should be ordered into the irregularities in the R&R component, beginning from 2014-19 term,' said Mr. Baby. In his address, Mr. Brittas promised to raise his voice for the Polavaram-displaced at the national level. CPI(M) Central Committee Member K. Lokanadham, ASR district secretary Boppena Kiran and other leaders were present.
