CPI(M) MP opposes railways' move to surrender funds for projects in Kerala

Hindustan Times2 days ago

New Delhi, Communist Party of India MP John Brittas has written to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and the Railway Board, requesting them to reject the Southern Railway's move to surrender funds allocated for projects in Kerala in the 2025-26 budget.
In separate letters addressed to Vaishnaw and the Railway Board chairman, Brittas has expressed strong objection to a proposal submitted by the Southern Railway through a letter dated May 14 to surrender a substantial portion of the funds allocated in the budget for the Financial Year 2025-26 for the Angamali-Sabarimala and Tirunavaya-Guruvayur railway lines.
He has urged for immediate intervention to discard the Southern Railway's recommendation and ensure continued financial support for these crucial projects in the southern state.
"These projects, envisaged decades ago, remain unfinished due to persistent institutional apathy, despite their strategic, economic, and socio-cultural significance," Brittas said in his letter addressed to Vaishnaw.
He termed the move a blatant continuation of the long-standing neglect of Kerala's railway infrastructure and emphasised that the Angamali-Sabarimala line is of national significance given the magnitude of the Sabarimala pilgrimage, while the Tirunavaya-Guruvayur line is vital for improving connectivity in northern Kerala.
He pointed out that the Southern Railway has also proposed surrendering funds for projects in Tamil Nadu, revealing a broader pattern of bureaucratic disregard for long-standing railway demands in south India.
"The decision to surrender funds, ironically justified by citing a 'frozen' status, amounts to a perpetuation of neglect rather than an attempt at rectification. It is pertinent to note that the very status of these projects as 'frozen' is symptomatic of the broader pattern of railway discrimination against Kerala, where critical demands are either delayed or denied," the Left leader said.
He requested the minister to issue directions to the board to reject the Southern Railway's recommendations in this regard and instruct the authorities concerned to ensure the continuation, acceleration and proper funding of these long-pending projects.
"Kerala cannot be expected to wait indefinitely for basic rail infrastructure," he said.

Indian Railways passengers note! Is your IRCTC account Aadhaar-verified? Tatkal tickets won't be possible otherwise..

Indian Railways is planning to make the Tatkal ticketing process more robust by making some of the rules more stringent, like only Aadhar verified accounts will be allowed to book online Tatkal tickets, Aadhar based OTP authentication shall also be required for booking. Sources said that counter based tatkal ticket may also be booked after Aadhar verification to control malpractices. 'Indian Railways will soon start using e-Aadhaar authentication to book Tatkal tickets. This will help genuine users get confirmed tickets during need," said Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Vaishnaw on Friday said a passenger, who has bought physical ticket from the ticket counter can cancel it online through the IRCTC website or 139, but one has to visit the reservation centre for collecting the amount. The issue was raised by BJP MP Medha Vishram Kulkarni, who asked whether the passengers who have purchased waiting tickets from counter as opposed to etickets are required to visit the station before the train's departure for ticket cancellation. "Waitlisted PRS counter ticket shall be cancelled across the reservation counter on surrendering of the original PRS counter ticket as per time limit prescribed in Railway Passengers (Cancellation of Tickets and Refund of Fares) Rules 2015," Vaishnaw said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

Pollachi train passengers highlight various demands

The Pollachi Train Passengers Welfare Association has submitted a petition to the Railway Board and the Governor of Maharashtra, C.P. Radhakrishnan, pressing for the fulfilment of five vital demands concerning the Pollachi-Coimbatore and Palakkad-Pollachi-Dindigul sections of the Southern Railway. Association president S. Balakrishnan emphasised that the Pollachi Junction serves four taluks- Pollachi, Kinathukadavu, Anaimalai and Valparai, and was in urgent need of improved rail connectivity for the benefit of tourists, pilgrims, professionals, students, and traders. The association has called for the extension of the Bengaluru-Coimbatore Uday Express (Train Nos.: 22665/22666) to Pollachi and Kinathukadavu to benefit the large number of IT and private sector professionals from Pollachi and nearby regions who frequently travel to Bengaluru. It also sought the extension of the Ernakulam-Palakkad MEMU (Train Nos.: 66610/66609) to Pollachi via Anaimalai Road, which would greatly benefit students, employees, and tourists. The association has also proposed to the authorities, the introduction of a direct overnight train from Pollachi to Chennai Central via Kinathukadavu, Erode, and Katpadi that departs from Pollachi Jn. at 9 p.m., instead of the existing Palakkad-MGR Central daily express that departs from Pollachi Jn. at 5.20 p.m. It highlighted the need for a direct Tirunelveli-Mumbai (Dadar) Express via Palani, Pollachi, Kozhikode, Mangaluru, and Madgaon (Goa) to improve connectivity to Udupi, Goa and Mumbai, benefitting pilgrims, tourists and businessmen. It also suggested increasing the frequency of the existing Tirunelveli- Mumbai Dadar Express (Train Nos.: 22630/22629). Finally, the association has demanded an increase in the number of coaches in the Tiruchendur-Palakkad unreserved express (Train Nos.: 16731/16732) which currently has only 12 coaches. Citing daily overcrowding, the association has requested four additional unreserved and two to three reserved coaches, especially to serve the elderly, women, and children. Despite repeated petitions over the past seven years, the association noted that there had been no positive response and appealed for immediate action.

NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday announced that the next nationwide population census to start from April 1, 2026 and will, for the first time in over seven decades, include caste enumeration. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Census will be conducted in two phases under the Census Act, 1948, and the Census Rules, 1990. Reference date will be March 1, 2027. In snow-bound and non-synchronous regions including Ladakh, parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the census will begin earlier, from October 2026. The reference date for these areas will be 00:00 hours on October 1, 2026, while for the rest of the country it will be 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027. A formal notification outlining these reference dates is expected to be published in the official gazette on June 16, 2025. Reference date is the date to which population count relates. Also read: The decision to include caste data was confirmed earlier by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw following a Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs meeting held on April 30. Vaishnaw said the move was aimed at ensuring transparency and consistency, and to address concerns over varying approaches adopted by states. 'Some states have conducted caste surveys transparently, but others have not. These inconsistencies have created doubts and could disturb social harmony,' he said. The announcement comes as India prepares to undertake its first population census since 2011. The last census was conducted in two phases—House Listing and Housing Census from April to September 2010, and Population Enumeration in February 2011. Census 2021 had also been planned in a similar manner, but was indefinitely postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Preparations for the 2021 census had been completed and fieldwork was set to begin on April 1, 2020, when the pandemic hit. The inclusion of caste data in the upcoming census is considered a landmark development, especially since the last comprehensive caste-based count was done by the British between 1881 and 1931. The Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) conducted in 2011 under the UPA government did collect caste data, but it was never fully published or utilised. Poonam Muttreja, executive director of the Population Foundation of India, had earlier said that a caste census is essential to uncover deep-seated structural inequalities and to formulate inclusive policies.
