Carlota Ciganda among four golfers sharing lead at Meijer LPGA Classic
Spain's Carlota Ciganda and South Korea's Hye-Jin Choi each had 5-under-par rounds on Friday to forge a four-way tie atop the second-day leaderboard at the Meijer LPGA Classic in Belmont, Mich.
They're tied with France's Celine Boutier, who carded a 4-under-par 68 for the second straight day, and Australia's Karis Davidson at 8-under 136 for the tournament.
Ciganda, who missed the cut at last week's U.S. Women's Open, shook off a slow start with three pars and a bogey to score three birdies over her next five holes before going on a heater with three straight birdies over her back nine and an additional birdie two holes later.
"I hit it pretty close and made a couple good putts that gave me confidence," Ciganda said. "Yeah, I felt pretty good out there."
She finished her day with par-bogey-par to complete an up-and-down day that was very much more up than down.
"I always feel comfortable in this golf course. I enjoy coming here and I seem to do well here."
Choi, by comparison, was the picture of consistency, suffering a single bogey on the par-3 11th. Beyond that, she was at or under par on every hole, netting birdies on Holes 1, 4, 6, 8, 16 and 18.
Despite 23 top 10 finishes, Choi, 25, is still seeking her first career win.
"Today the goal for my round was to be bogey-free, and I tried to be very calm during the round, so it was a good round today," Choi said.
The much-accomplished Boutier , finished well out of the running in a tie for 53rd at this event a season ago. But she's been rock-solid this go around, carding seven birdies with three bogeys to hit 68 two days running.
"For the past few weeks my game has been pretty solid," Boutier said. "I just feel like it's coming together kind of slowly, so hopefully a few good results here and there will help me build some momentum."
Davidson, 26, shares the lead on the strength of a sizzling opening round that featured six birdies and no bogeys. Seeking her first career win as well, she had three birdies and a bogey on Friday.
"I think this is the first time I've been tied for first in an LPGA event after two rounds, so, yeah, I'm just really excited that I wasn't fighting for the cut," Davidson said. "It was a bit of a different feeling out there."
A staggering 20 golfers are within three strokes of the leaders. Six golfers are a single stroke back: Denmark's Nanna Koerstz Madsen , Lexi Thompson , Amanda Doherty , England's Bronte Law , Australia's Minjee Lee and Paraguay's Sofia Garcia .

BELMONT, Mich. — Lexi Thompson birdied two of the final three holes Saturday in the Meijer LPGA Classic for a share of the third-round lead with five others in a bid to win for the first time in just over six years. Thompson shot a 4-under 68, rebounding with birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 after driving into the water and making a bogey on the par-5 14th. 'Not my best ball-striking day,' Thompson said.' But I scrambled very well and stayed positive, patient, and that's what it's kind of all about.' At 11-under 205 at Blythefield County Club, she was tied with Nanna Koerstz Madsen , Madelene Sagstrom , Sofia Garcia , Hye-Jin Choi and Carlota Ciganda . Thompson was back on top a year after losing a playoff to Lilia Vu on the tree-lined course. 'Everybody is going to come out swinging,' Thompson said. 'Good weather tomorrow, so I know birdies will have to be made and I'll have to go pin-seeking. I will hope for the best, go out there and embrace the opportunity, and really love on the fans.' The 30-year-old from Florida won the last of her 11 LPGA Tour titles in early June 2019 at the ShopRite LPGA Classic. She's making her sixth start of the season in a part-time tour schedule, and also is set to play next week in the major KPMG Women's PGA Championship in Texas. Koerstz Madsen bogeyed the final two holes to lose a two-stroke lead. 'The positive thing is now I feel what's going on when I get a little nervous, so I can work on what I need to be focusing on tomorrow,' Koerstz Madsen. 'Because I'm definitely going to be nervous tomorrow.' Garcia had the lead at 13 under after 12 holes, then bogeyed the next three. 'I'm happy I was able to get it back together,' Garcia said. 'Made a really good chip out on 16. Was able to have a good finish.' Choi missed a 5-foot birdie putt on 18 in the final group. Sagstrom, the T-Mobile Match Play winner in Las Vegas in April, had an eagle-birdie-eagle burst on Nos. 4-6. 'I always try to attack the course,' Sagstrom said." I think I do play quite aggressive. A year after playoff loss, Lexi Thompson back in contention at Meijer LPGA Classic
BELMONT, Mich. — Lexi Thompson was back in contention going into the weekend in the her beloved Meijer LPGA Classic, a year after a playoff loss at Blythefield County Club. Making her sixth start of the season in a part-time tour schedule, Thompson birdied three of the last four holes in breezy afternoon conditions for a 3-under 69 and a 7-under total. The 2015 winner at Blythefield was a stroke behind leaders Karis Davidson, Carlota Ciganda, Hye-Jin Choi and Celine Boutier. 'The golf course is one thing. It's always in great shape for us, which we always look forward to," Thompson said after the bogey-free round on the tree-lined layout. "But the amount of support that the tournament gets and also how Meijer gives back to the community as well. It's not just a tournament. It's much bigger than that.' The 30-year-old from Florida won the last of her 11 LPGA Tour titles in 2019. 'Some days are harder than others and we get frustrated, but at the end of the day it is just golf,' said Thompson, also set to play next week in the major KPMG Women's PGA Championship in Texas. Davidson, playing in the second-to-last group off the first tee, birdied the par-4 16th and par-5 18th for a 70. Ciganda and Choi each shot 67, and Boutier had a 68, all playing the morning session. Grace Kim, also part of the playoff last year that Lilia Vu won, was 6 under after a 73. She bogeyed two of her last three holes to fall out of a tie for the lead. Mi Hyang Lee, the first-round leader after a 64, had a 75 to drop to 5 under. With the major days away at PGA Frisco, only three of the top 10 in the world are at Blythefield.
