Central lights up
Reports from Kaitangata indicate that their prospects for this season are exceptionally bright. It is reassuring to know that all the old players are again turning out, and with the addition of some new talent they hope to regain their prestige of some seasons back. The old veteran Jock Richardson is president of the club, and in J. Campbell they have a capable captain . The secretarial duties are in the hands of A.A. Tripp. The Kaitangata players express the hope that there will be no defaulting teams this season. They point out that they are put to considerable expense in travelling to town every second Saturday, and last year, owing to several teams from town failing to fulfil engagements at the mining township, the club's finances reached a very low state.
The culminating point of the original scheme of the Otago Central Power Board was reached last night when the street lighting of Alexandra and Clyde was turned on. Elaborate preparations had been made to celebrate the incoming of the power on March 25, when power was first made available to the consumers, but the health restrictions necessitated a postponement. It was then decided to hold a modified programme when the street lighting was turned on. This function was held yesterday, and Alexandra was en fete in honour of the occasion. The raising of the restrictions enabled children to be included.
The ceremony of turning on the light was held at 7pm, and the whole of the district was present to witness the function. The Alexandra Brass Band enlivened the proceedings. Mr W. Black (Mayor and chairman of the Power Board), in opening the proceedings, expressed pleasure that they were gathered together to celebrate an innovation which would mean a new era to the town and district. He then called upon Mr Jas. Horn MP officially to switch on the light. After having performed this function, which flooded the remote corners of the town with light, Mr Horn congratulated the people of Alexandra on the success of their scheme.
The official party journeyed to Clyde, where a similar function was performed. The festivities were concluded with a fancy dress ball.

The new agreement signed a month ago between the New Zealand and Imperial Governments regarding assisted passages for approved immigrants from Britain is announced. All juveniles between 12 and 19 years will be carried free, except those not accompanying parents, who will be charged the former rate of £5 10s. Instead of the previous flat rate there will be an adult rate of £l6 10s for those over 19 years. Married adults with or without children will be charged £11.
City choir sings Gounod
The music of "Faust," in an abridged form, was sung by the Dunedin Choral Society last evening to an audience that completely filled His Majesty's Theatre. Mr Ernest Drake sang the music of Faust and Mr G. Thomson that of Mephisto — both big undertakings. Miss Meda Paine was allotted the part of Margarita, Miss Helen Grant that of Siebel, and Mr W. Gemmell sang
Valentine and Wagner. The orchestra was led by Mr J.A. Wallace, and carried out its duties very commendably. The big solo is of course the "Jewel Song," usually regarded as the test of a soprano, and Miss Paine sang it with excellent effect. — ODT, 30.4.1925

Ford, who will play centre, will have a major impact on proceedings and will appreciate having Ben Maxwell, now with Maniototo, running the backline from first-five. Loose forward Will Healey, in dynamic form for Alexandra after breaking his ankle last season, is another to watch. Stalwarts of the Central team include lock Dean Sinnamon, who has scored eight tries for Matakanui Combined so far this season, fullback Doug Smith, winger Jamie Natapu, midfielder Rube Peina and No 8 Jake Burtenshaw. Props Mike Phillips (Matakanui Combined) and William Holdom (Alexandra) will anchor the scrum. The Central Otago starting fifteen includes five players from Wakatipu, four from Alexandra and two each from Upper Clutha, Matakanui Combined and Maniototo. Hat-trick key for Topp thriller

A hat-trick of tries from mobile lock Dean Sinnamon led Central Region to a thrilling 41-38 victory over Southern Region in a highly entertaining contest for the much-treasured Topp Cup at Molyneux Park on Saturday. Lock Sinnamon, already the leading try scorer in the Central Otago club competition this season, remarkable enough for a team that is bottom of the competition, romped away with the man of the match award, controlling the lineout as well as proving a champion finisher. He was one of three players who dominated the scoring. Central second five Rube Peina goal-kicked impeccably, converting all five of his team's tries and adding two penalty goals for a 16-point haul while Southern Region fullback Jared Hayes finished with 18 points from a try, five conversions and a penalty goal. Remarkably, only one kick at goal, an attempt by Peina from near halfway, missed. Southern, holders of the Topp Cup, led only once in the game, at 14-10, and appeared down and out when trailing 31-41 with 12 minutes remaining. But a daring 'hail Mary' pass from the Central backs, full of confidence as they sought another five-pointer, was intercepted by Southern winger Junior Meafua, who sprinted 80m for a try between the posts. Suddenly the game was wide open and when Southern surged back to the 22, it seemed they might steal an outrageous victory. But Central's defence was up to the challenge and the Topp Cup went to the team that, across 80 minutes, produced the classier rugby. Besides Sinnamon and Peina, Central's star performers were the Alexandra pair of lock Will Healey and halfback ''Chugga'' O'Neill, flanker Anton Huisman, centre and captain Tyler Ford and flying wingers Jamie Natapu and Conor Hamlin. Cromwell's Rhys Harrold, a late replacement for Ben Maxwell, ran the backline expertly from first-five. Southern fullback Hayes, a star of his team's victory in 2024, threatened to win the game on his own but found the challenge just too great. Halfback Sam Stratford contributed plenty and scored two tries while lock Damian Wilson ensured his team had ample ball to work with. But although there was only three points separating the sides at the final whistle, Central triumphed as the superior attacking team. In the curtainraisers, Central won the men's development contest 21-14 while the women's game went to Alhambra Union 26-21 over the Central Otago Does. — Bob Howitt
