Apac's prominence in data centre growth can be attributed to the region's rapid digitalisation, expanding internet user base, and supportive government policies. In fact, according to IDC's report 'Datacentre IT Power Capacity in Asia/Pacific to Reach 94.4 Gigawatts in 2028', the installed data centre power capacity in Asia-Pacific (APAC) is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.2%, reaching 94.4 gigawatts by 2028. This surge underscores the region's pivotal role in the digital economy.
However, this rapid growth presents significant challenges, particularly concerning environmental responsibility. Data centres are substantial consumers of energy, and their expansion amplifies concerns about power consumption and carbon emissions. The increasing demand for high-performance computing necessitates that data centres scale efficiently while implementing strategies to mitigate their environmental impact
The sustainability paradox: Growth versus Impact
As the world recently celebrated Earth Day 2025, attention was turning to industries with significant energy footprints. With expansion comes urgency. As APAC markets such as China (China's Road to Net Zero: Reshape the Country and the World), India (Understanding the Future of Net Zero Carbon in India), and Singapore (Our Global Commitment to Climate Change and Sustainable Development) push towards net-zero commitments, the data centre industry must rethink its cooling and energy efficiency strategies to enable growth without exacerbating existing climate challenges.
While energy consumption has long been a concern, water usage is now emerging as an equally critical issue. The way data centres are powered and cooled in the coming years will define the industry's environmental footprint. As corporate responsibility expectations rise, companies must adopt more innovative and efficient cooling solutions to reduce energy consumption without compromising performance.
Rethinking cooling: The key to more responsible data cente
With AI workloads driving unprecedented power densities, traditional air-cooling methods are reaching their limits. The industry must now embrace next-generation cooling solutions that improve efficiency while reducing environmental impact. Signaling the increased importance placed on new cooling solutions technology, liquid cooling is emerging as a leading solution as AI workloads exceed the capabilities of conventional air-cooled systems. ST Telemedia Global Data Centres Philippines (STT GDC Philippines), together with Vertiv and Novare Technologies, unveiled the country's first liquid cooling technology showroom, offering visitors a hands-on look at how these advanced systems can enhance both energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.
In fact, Singapore's first tropical data centre testbed- Vertiv Supports Singapore's First Tropical Data Centre Testbed with Energy-Efficient Cooling Technologies - offers a glimpse into how operators can address cooling challenges unique to Asia's climate. The use of energy-efficient technologies in this environment demonstrates the potential for alternative approaches that balance thermal management with environmental impact. As AI-driven workloads increase, such innovations will be critical to ensuring data centres remain both high-performing and environmentally responsible.
One solution gaining attention is direct-to-chip immersion cooling. These approaches significantly enhance thermal dissipation, reducing the energy required to keep processors at optimal operating temperature while improving performance. Industry leaders like Vertiv and Oxigen: Building Data Centres for the Future are already deploying liquid-cooled data centres, setting new efficiency benchmarks.
Beyond liquid cooling, other technologies are reshaping how the industry approaches responsible thermal management. Chilled water systems using low-GWP refrigerants are improving efficiency while minimising environmental harm. Meanwhile, hybrid cooling ecosystems - which combine renewable and conventional energy sources - offer operators a more flexible and resilient path to cooling optimisation.
The future of more responsible data centres
As AI continues to drive data centre expansion, the industry must prioritise long-term impact and rethink how facilities are designed and operated. AI-driven cooling systems are becoming smarter and more efficient. By adjusting in real time to changing workloads, they help reduce energy waste and improve overall performance.
At the same time, data centre infrastructure is being reimagined for greater efficiency. According to reports Prefabricated Modular Data centre Report–2023, operators are increasingly adopting modular, prefabricated designs that allow for faster deployment, better energy performance, and a smaller environmental footprint. Many of these next-generation facilities are integrating heat recovery systems, low-emission cooling technologies, and resource management—ensuring that digital growth can scale responsibly.

The choices made today will determine the long-term impact of data centres. As digital infrastructure continues to grow, businesses must act decisively to reduce their environmental footprint while meeting the increasing demands of AI and high-performance computing. By adopting next-generation cooling solutions, integrating AI-driven efficiencies, and embracing alternative energy, data centres can continue to scale without compromising environmental impact. The challenge is significant - but so is the opportunity to lead the global energy transition and, ensuring that scalability does not come at the cost of the planet.

YTL Power posts record RM2.4b annual profit on higher power and telco earnings, declares four sen dividend
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — YTL Power International Bhd's net profit declined to RM2.40 billion in the financial year ended June 30, 2025 (FY2025) from RM3.41 billion in the same period a year ago. Revenue also eased to RM21.81 billion from RM22.28 billion due to lower performance in the telecommunications business. On its prospects, the group expects to remain resilient due to the essential nature of its operations and said it will continue to closely monitor the related risks and impact on all business segments. 'For power generation, the group will be developing a large portion of the Kulai Young Estate into a large scale solar power facility with a generation capacity of up to 500 megawatts (MW) to co-power the adjacent 600 MW green data centre park. This is in line with the group's shift towards investing in more sustainable renewable energy solutions moving forward,' it said in a stock exchange filing. For the telecommunications segment, it said YTL Communications Sdn Bhd expects to extend its 5G services to the rest of the country, in tandem with the rollout of Digital National Bhd's 5G network. 'By continuing to offer affordable data plans and offering innovative 5G services, this segment is looking to increase its subscriber base, bolstered by partnerships and collaborations,' it added. YTL Power's net profit weakened to RM670 million in the fourth quarter ended June 30, 2025 from RM1.01 billion in the same period a year ago, while revenue fell to RM5.55 billion from RM6.31 billion previously due to lower performance in the power generation business. It declared a second interim dividend of four sen per ordinary share for FY2025. The book closure and payment dates for the dividend are October 2, 2025 and October 23, 2025, respectively. — Bernama

YTL Corp FY2025 net profit dips to RM1.88b, revenue edges up to RM30.82b
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — YTL Corporation Bhd recorded a lower net profit of RM1.88 billion for the financial year ended June 30, 2025 (FY2025) from RM2.14 billion in the previous financial year. Revenue, however, rose to RM30.82 billion in FY2025 against RM30.49 billion, mainly attributable to the group's utilities business, it said in a filing to Bursa Malaysia today. For the fourth quarter ended June 30, 2025 (4Q 2025), the group's net profit was marginally higher at RM547.17 million compared to RM534.96 million in the same quarter of the preceding year, while revenue slipped to RM7.67 billion versus RM8.23 billion. YTL Corp said its utilities segment reported revenue of RM5.19 billion in 4Q compared to RM5.96 billion in the corresponding quarter of the preceding year, while profit after tax stood at RM841.3 million against RM812.6 million previously. Meanwhile, the group's construction segment revenue declined primarily due to lower revenue from external projects, while the management services and others segment, as well as hotel operations, recorded a higher revenue and profit before tax. In a statement, YTL group executive chairman Tan Sri Francis Yeoh Sock Ping said the group continued to deliver a strong set of results in 4Q, registering five per cent and 40 per cent increases in revenue and profit after tax, respectively, compared to the previous quarter, with the better performance mainly driven by the utilities segment. Malaysia's digital journey, closing the gap with AI transformation
ORGANISATIONS must pursue digital strategies to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving landscape. Malaysian companies need to accelerate digital transformation to keep up with cutting-edge developments. However, what isn't well known is exactly where Malaysian organisations stand vis-a-vis other South-East Asian and global companies. It also isn't clear what are the factors dragging down Malaysian enterprises' digital progress. But recent research conducted by IDC called the IDC 2025 CEO Outlook, which was sponsored by Maxis Business – the B2B arm of integrated telecommunications provider Maxis - reveals valuable and actionable insights. It breaks down the digital business progression of companies into four levels – nascent, developing, enhancing and leading. The nascent stage is where companies are missing out on business opportunities and lagging industry norms in many areas. The developing stage is where companies are making progress but are hobbled by significant capability gaps, while the enhancing stage is where the company has a mix of good capabilities and has identified areas for improved business outcomes. Those in the leading segment have achieved success from their digital business investments. The study shows that Malaysia's digital evolution lags regional and global peers. For example, 47% of Malaysian enterprises are still only at the developing stage compared with 17% for Thailand and 27% in general for the whole of South-East Asia. The research also shows that only 17% are at the 'enhancing' stage, compared with Thailand (23%) and South-East Asia (20%). According to IDC, examination of the issues showed a confluence of factors dragging Malaysian enterprises' digital progress. One issue is the lack of leadership in guiding the organisation through its digital transformation. In this context, the report points out that top chief executive officers (CEOs) around the world who have successfully used technology to strengthen their businesses have done a few things differently. These CEOs have focused on using technology to compete and reskill their labour force. They have also come up with ways to encourage a customer-centric culture within their organisations as well as focused on 'data-driven' decision making. Other issues holding back Malaysian organisations in their digital transformation include the lack of capability to harness their data, which is linked to having a shortage of skills. These organisations are also sometimes stuck with legacy technology systems, which become a challenge for any kind of innovation to take place. In terms of company spend on IT, Malaysia also lags behind. The IDC report indicates that for 2025, the Malaysian IT spend is falling behind the worldwide expected spend, which is growing more than two times gross domestic product or GDP growth. The study identified critical gaps when compared to global leading digital businesses. These include the lack of digital business model innovation, tactical use of data, inefficient operational processes, and the lack of tools to streamline workflows. The report recommended that business and technology leaders rethink legacy approaches, assess current capabilities, and benchmark against leading enterprises to implement a roadmap that positions Malaysia as a future digital powerhouse. The AI conundrum And then there is artificial intelligence (AI). This, of course, makes the digital journey even more complex but necessary. According to IDC, within Asia-Pacific excluding Japan, Al is expected to generate an economic impact of over US$1.2 trillion over the next three years. This impact will be in the form of operational efficiency and growth with Al-powered automation and products and services. Yet, the study shows that 50% of Malaysian organisations have focused on implementing productivity use cases. The IDC report, however, points out that while these use cases are quick to implement, they lack the full transformative impact that Al can bring about. Instead, a broader approach incorporating a variety of use cases comprising productivity gains, operational efficiency and growth is needed to sustain and maximise Al's transformative potential, IDC reckons. The report also states that the limited use of digital tools hampers Al adoption. 'Agile work models require digital collaboration tools and adaptive training solutions to reskill and upskill employees. Without these, there is a gap in building the necessary digital and Al literacy and enable agile development teams that accelerate innovation,' the report states. Another factor that needs to be considered is having consistent and streamlined processes. Without these, implementing Al-driven efficiencies in workflows becomes challenging. This, in turn, can lead to 'siloed Al initiatives' that drive inconsistent security practices and expose sensitive data to cyber threats, IDC says. Additionally, non-standardised processes complicate compliance with regulatory requirements. When it comes to dealing with data capabilities, organisations are still in the early stages of building advanced data infrastructure like data warehouses and data lakes. This restricts the ability to harness Al's full potential, IDC points out. Meanwhile, with digital business models still in their infancy, companies in Malaysia are struggling to generate meaningful digital revenue streams. 'The absence of mature digital strategies limits the opportunities to integrate Al into customer-facing and revenue-generating initiatives, limiting a strong business return on investment and making investments unattractive,' IDC points out.
