Ricky Ponting Reacts After Joe Root Breaks His Record Of 13,378 Test Runs: Watch
Joe Root on Friday added another feather to his cap while batting against India on the third day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford. After notching up his 38 th Test hundred, Root surpassed Australian legend Ricky Ponting's tally to become the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket history. The England star now has only Indian great Sachin Tendulkar ahead of him in the all-time list.
The milestone came on Day 3 of the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford. In the morning session, he overtook both Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis to move into third place. Later, after the lunch break, he steered the ball behind point for a single to go past Ponting's 13,378-run mark, getting a standing ovation from the crowd at Old Trafford.
Ponting had scored 13,378 runs in 168 Tests at an average of 51.85. Tendulkar still leads the chart with an unmatched tally of 15,921 runs in 200 Tests. Root, now playing his 157th match, has a realistic chance of chasing that number in the years ahead.
While Root reached the milestone, Ponting was in the commentary, calling the game. The former Australia captain didn't hesitate to applaud the England batter, offering heartfelt praise for his achievement.

Root had started his Test journey back in 2012 with a solid 73-run knock on debut against India in Nagpur.
Another record came Root's way in this match: he became the batter with the most Test centuries against India. His hundred at Old Trafford was his 12th against them, breaking a tie with Australia's Steve Smith, who has 11 centuries in 24 Tests against India. Just a week earlier, Root had equalled Smith's record by scoring 104 at Lord's.
The century was also Root's 38th in Test cricket overall, putting him level with Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara. Only Tendulkar (51), Kallis (45), and Ponting (41) have scored more centuries in the longest format.
