ANC Peter Mokaba regional conference, where chairs were thrown amidst fistfights, may get a rerun

The ANC Peter Mokaba Regional Conference in Limpopo may face a rerun after supporters of Mamedupi Teffo, the ANC Women's League Provincial Chairperson and Capricorn District Mayor, launched a complaint against the chaotic conference.
The conference, which was held at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, saw Polokwane Mayor John Mpe reelected as chairperson unopposed, despite allegations of irregularities and internal disputes.
Teffo was to challenge Mpe, but did not in protest against the alleged irregularities.
According to documents shared on social media, 31 branches were allegedly disqualified in a final dispute report, leaving only 74 qualifying branches - below the required 70% threshold of 79 branches.
Delegates who raised these issues argued that the conference should not have proceeded without addressing outstanding disputes.

Some delegates accused the Regional Task Team (RTT) of allowing "bogus" delegates into the venue, leading to verbal disputes that escalated into physical confrontations.
Former ANC Youth League official in the province Thabo Mabotja, who supports Teffo, is leading the charge insisting that the elections were not legitimate.
He and other officials have contacted ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, filing a complaint against the alleged regularities.
The group has called for a conference rerun to be held within 30 days. Mbalula has not yet responded to the complaints.
Mabotja claimed that the conference did not meet the necessary quorum to continue with elections and announced plans to submit a formal complaint to the ANC's provincial and national structures.
"We believe these elections were irregular and premature. We will be engaging the provincial and national leadership on this matter," Mabotja said.
Other ANC members in Mabotja's camp vowed to take the matter further, saying they are considering legal action with some claiming that ANC provincial secretary Reuben Madadzhe was biased because he was aligned to Mpe.
ANC Limpopo spokesperson Jimmy Machaka confirmed that the party in the province was awaiting communication from Mbalula as to what decision he had taken.
"We are awaiting the decision of the ANC Secretary General, Fikile Mbalula, regarding the outcomes of the conference or the submitted disputes," said Machaka.
However, Madadzhe has since legitimised the conference, despite chaotic scenes and allegations of irregularities.
"We stand by that decision that the conference is not bogus, and is a legitimate conference of the ANC. You will never have a bogus conference of the ANC with four PEC officials attending the conference," Madadzhe said.

'The Soviet Union stood with us when others branded us as criminals,' she said, adding that today, political power belongs to democratic governments that reflect the interests of the people. She warned of a 'new wave of imperialism,' citing political manipulation, media interference, and the financial bolstering of opposition parties by Western governments. Mokonyane referenced recent US trade policies, including the imposition of tariffs and the rollback of trade preferences, as examples of neo-colonial economic warfare. 'These are not coincidences,' Mokonyane said, stating that they were deliberate moves to weaken progressive governments and reinstall puppet regimes. 'They use their control over the media to destabilise the situation in your countries. Mantashe rubbishes claims that senior ANC officials were behind Seta board appointments
Minister Gwede Mantashe has rubbished claims from the DA's Karabo Khakhau and EFF's Sihle Lonzi that senior politicians within the ANC were behind the controversial appointments of the chairpersons for 21 Seta boards. Members of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, Karabo Khakhau and Sihle Lonzi, who were vocal about alleged corruption and nepotism at the Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta) after it emerged that ANC politicians were going to be appointed chairpersons for the 21 Seta boards responsible for skills development, allege that senior officials were behind these appointments, including the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantshe. On 13 May 2025, Khakhau revealed on X that then Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane had appointed ANC cadres from KwaZulu-Natal to Seta boards, including the new Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Nomusa Dube-Ncube; former ANC provincial deputy chairperson Mike Mabuyakhulu; and Buyambo Mantashe, son of Gwede Mantashe. 🇿🇦Higher Ed Minister Nkabane appoints KZN ANC cadres and Mantashe's son to SETA Boards (see list below). Khakhau said that if there was a panel, Seta director Mabuza Ngubane, who testified on 18 July and denied involvement in the controversial Seta appointments, would have sent the list of applications and nominees to the panel instead of the minister; then the panel would engage with the minister. 'So it again begs the question: Was this panel a smokescreen to cover up the fact that the minister deliberately underwent a process of catered appointments to appoint ANC-connected politicians from KwaZulu-Natal, people who are linked to Gwede Mantashe, on the instruction of Gwede Mantashe to head up Seta board chairpersons? That's the question that still needs to be resolved,' said Khakhau. She added: 'There's more than what meets the eye, and she (Nkabane) won't run away forever. This is a clear case of corruption.' 'Minister is a pawn' Meanwhile, Lonzi told Daily Maverick that Nkabane might be a front for this process, with higher-up officials in the ANC pulling the strings. 'We're of the view that there are very senior ANC officials involved. We know how the corrupt ANC operates and how it captures SOEs. Mantashe rubbishes claims from DA and EFF On 28 July Mantashe told Daily Maverick that in the ANC, he was never part of any deployment committee, and that he had nothing to do with the Seta scandal. 'I would never influence appointments while I am not on the committee. My son is an educated adult with a master's [degree]. So when he gets appointed, people should not say it is me… I met Lonzi and told him that you need to get educated,' said Mantshe. The so-called independent panel issue was concluded last week, when four panellists said they were not involved after a public outcry and student formations calling for Nkabane to be removed as the Minister of Higher Education and Training. President Cyril Ramaphosa then axed Nkabane. However, before her removal ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula defended Nkabane in a media briefing at Luthuli House, saying Nkabane had not broken the law regarding the Seta board appointments. The DA has opened criminal charges of fraud and statutory offences against Nkabane, and the Hawks are investigating the matter, according to reports. After Nkabane's removal from office, Ramaphosa appointed Buti Manamela as the minister of higher education. Nkabane, however, continues to be an MP in the National Assembly. DM

The school nutrition Programme in KZN benefits around 2 million learners. As KZN education MEC Sipho Hlomuka waits to hear whether he will be sanctioned by Premier Thami Ntuli, his department has denied allegations of tender corruption. It is alleged that politically connected companies were awarded National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) contracts in an alleged attempt to garner support for his bid to become ANC provincial chairperson. Political parties in the KZN legislature are demanding an investigation into the tender process, and the minister of basic education, Siviwe Gwarube, has also requested answers from the province. On Wednesday, the provincial Head of Department, Nkosinathi Ngcobo, said all correct procedures were followed in the awarding of the contracts. 'From the outset, it is important that we place on record the fact that the process has been done in line with all the procurement processes and relevant prescripts. 'The process undertaken had various stages, which included the advertising of the tender, after which every eligible South African was at liberty to apply. 'It is also very important to indicate that after the advertisement of the bid, all bidders were invited to the compulsory briefing sessions in all 12 Districts, where all the bidders were taken through the requirements of the bid,' Ngcobo said. Twenty thousand bids received for NSNP tender He claimed 20 000 bids were subjected to the same comprehensive evaluation criteria in line with all the Supply Chain Management (SCM) processes. 'All the bids were subjected to a standard evaluation process as set out in the bid document. It is also important to state categorically that evaluation and adjudication were followed in line with the prescribed procedures,' he said. 'The Department is currently at a stage where it is dealing with the appeals or objections. An unfortunate situation with regard to this tender is that it attracts thousands of bidders who all have to compete for only 1 756 clusters across the 12 Districts. 'We note with disappointment that once some bidders are not recommended for the award, they resort to illegitimasing the entire process,' he said.
