AirPods software updates enhance calls and content capture
Updates to audio recording enable creators to record studio-quality vocals on the go, and start or stop video recordings from a distance with a simple press of the AirPods stem. Building on the benefits of Voice Isolation, AirPods users will also enjoy even clearer calls with enhanced voice quality.
Creating content gets even better with studio-quality audio recording. Interviewers, podcasters, singers, and other creators can record their content with greater sound quality, and even record while on the go or in noisy environments with Voice Isolation. With the H2 chip, beamforming microphones, and computational audio, users will also enjoy more natural vocal texture and clarity across iPhone calls, FaceTime, and CallKit-enabled apps. Studio-quality audio recording and improved call quality work across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, while also supporting the Camera app, Voice Memos, dictation in Messages, video conferencing apps like Webex, and compatible third-party camera apps.
Capturing content at a distance is easier than ever with camera remote. While using the Camera app or compatible third-party camera apps on iPhone or iPad, content creators can press and hold the AirPods stem to take a photo or start a video recording, and one more press-and-hold will stop the recording. For users who like capturing themselves singing or dancing, the new features make it easy to perform in sync with a soundtrack while simultaneously recording the video.
All of these features are available for testing starting today through the Apple Developer Program at developer.apple.com, and a public beta will be available through the Apple Beta Software Program next month at beta.apple.com. New AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods Pro 2 features will be available this fall as a free firmware update with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. Features are subject to change. OpenAI reveals plan to increase adoption of its AI chatbot
OpenAI has partnered with the US General Services Administration (GSA) to offer its ChatGPT model to the US federal workforce for the nominal fee of $1 a year. This initiative is part of the AI developer's plan to increase adoption of its chatbot. Earlier this week, GSA, which is the government's centralised procurement division, announced it added Anthropic, Google and OpenAI to its list of approved AI companies for use across civilian federal agencies. OpenAI stated it will provide wide access to the enterprise version of ChatGPT by charging $1 for the next year, including an additional 60-day period for unlimited use of advanced features. The company set up a dedicated government user community to help federal employees feel confident about using AI. Custom training platforms and guided learning are also available to help them explore and use the technology. 'This effort delivers on a core pillar of the Trump Administration's AI Action Plan by making powerful AI tools available across the federal government so that workers can spend less time on red tape and paperwork, and more time doing what they came to public service to do: serve the American people,' OpenAI stated. It noted ChatGPT Enterprise does not use business data, including inputs or outputs, to train or improve models and it stated the same safeguards will apply to federal use. Additionally, GSA has officially issued an Authority to Use (ATU) for ChatGPT Enterprise, 'demonstrating our commitment to rigorous security and compliance standards'. Since 2024, more than 90,000 users across more than 3,500 US federal, state, and local government agencies have sent over 18 million messages on ChatGPT to support their day-to-day work, according to OpenAI's website. Nvidia to pay US 15% of AI chip sales to China
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday and agreed to give the federal government the cut from its revenues, a highly unusual arrangement in the international tech trade, according to reports in the Financial Times, Bloomberg and New York Times. AFP was not able to immediately verify the reports. Investors are betting that AI will transform the global economy, and last month Nvidia -- the world's leading semiconductor producer -- became the first company ever to hit $4 trillion in market value. The California-based firm has, however, become entangled in trade tensions between China and the United States, which are waging a heated battle for dominance to produce the chips that power AI. The US has been restricting which chips Nvidia can export to China on national security grounds. Nvidia said last month that Washington had pledged to let the company sell its "H20" chips to China, which are a less powerful version the tech giant specifically developed for the Chinese market. The Trump administration had not issued licenses to allow Nvidia to sell the chips before the reported White House meeting. On Friday, however, the Commerce Department started granting the licenses for chip sales, the reports said. Silicon Valley-based Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will also pay 15 percent of revenue on Chinese sales of its MI308 chips, which it was previously barred from exporting to the country. The deal could earn the US government more than $2 billion, according to the New York Times report. The move comes as the Trump administration has been imposing stiff tariffs, with goals varying from addressing US trade imbalances, wanting to reshore manufacturing and pressuring foreign governments to change policies. A 100 percent tariff on many semiconductor imports came into effect last week, with exceptions for tech companies that announce major investments in the United States.
