Woman, daughter arrested for murder in Delhi's Nihal Vihar

New Delhi [India], May 25 (ANI): Two women, a woman and her daughter have been arrested for allegedly murdering a 50-year-old man in Nihal Vihar area of the national capital, according to the Delhi Police.
The man identified as Rajesh Mittal was the brother-in-law and uncle, respectively, of the arrested woman and her daughter.
The accused woman's husband, Mittal's elder brother, left the house 10-12 years ago.
The duo confessed to the crime during a police interrogation and has been sent to judicial custody on Saturday, police said.
According to police, Rajesh Mittal was declared brought dead at a hospital on Friday (May 23). He sustained a stab wound.
According to the police Mittal was unemployed. He was taken to the hospital by his niece and a cousin who lives in the neighbourhood.
Initial inquiry suggested that only Mittal, his sister-in-law, and his 28-year-old niece were present at the house at the time of the incident, said the police statement.
According to them, Mittal was under the influence of alcohol when he got involved in a scuffle reportedly over a dispute that had arisen over the ownership of the house, which was jointly purchased by the deceased and the accused.
Further investigation into the matter is currently underway. (ANI)

Delhi HC upholds Will of Luxor Founder DK Jain; dismisses daughters appeals
New Delhi [India], August 19 (ANI): The Delhi High Court on Tuesday upheld the validity of the Will of late industrialist Davinder Kumar Jain (DKJ), founder of the Luxor Group, dismissing challenges raised by his daughter Priya Jain. A Division Bench of Justice Anil Kshetarpal and Justice Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar affirmed the May 27, 2025 order of a Single Judge, which had granted probate of DKJ's December 11, 2004 Will in favour of executor Sanjay Kalra. As a result, Priya Jain's separate partition suit over her father's estate was also rendered its verdict on Tuesday, the Bench confirmed that the probate granted earlier in favour of Usha Jain, widow of DKJ, stood legally valid. The Court stated that the Will vested DKJ's entire estate, including his substantial business interests and a 50 per cent stake in Delhi's iconic Qutab Hotel, in her name, subject to succession passing to the children if she predeceased him. Priya Jain had alleged that the Will was forged and fabricated, citing variations in the spelling of her father's name ('Davinder" vs. 'Devendra"), discrepancies in heirs' recorded ages, absence of codicils despite expansion of assets, and its emergence only after DKJ's death in 2014. She further contended that the signatures required a forensic Division Bench rejected these objections, holding that attesting witness Mahesh Kumar Gupta confirmed DKJ signed the Will in his presence and that of another witness, testimony that withstood cross-examination. The Court pointed out Priya had herself acknowledged the Will's validity in multiple documents, including a 2014 Memorandum of Understanding, and had benefited financially through share transfers and release of fixed deposits. Spelling differences and the Will's unregistered status were deemed immaterial, as registration is not mandatory under the Indian Succession Act, 1925. The Court held probate could lawfully be granted to one executor under Section 311 ISA, even without the co-executor Bench also dismissed allegations of undue favours to witnesses and refused to draw adverse inferences from the fact that Usha Jain did not personally that the Will 'stood duly proved in accordance with law, free from suspicious circumstances, and reflective of the testator's volition," the Court dismissed both appeals and disposed of all pending applications. Senior Advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Darpan Wadhwa, assisted by Karanjawala & Co. partners Ruby Singh Ahuja, Vasu Singh, Megha Dugar, Tribhuvan N. Singh, and Aditi Mohan, represented Usha Jain. 'Can you say it's criminal to love?': SC bats for distinction of rape from 'genuine' romance
The Supreme Court on Tuesday underlined the need to distinguish between rape and genuine romantic cases involving youngsters on the verge of majority. The bench observed that the police would look into the matters to ascertain whether it was a case of kidnapping, trafficking or whether it was a case of genuine love.(ANI) A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and R Mahadevan noted the existence of co-education institutions and universities and said, "Now, they develop feelings for each other. Can you say it is criminal to love? We have to keep a distinction between a criminal act like rape, etc., from this." The observations came on a petition raising the question whether or not the age of consent, which is 18 years, should be reduced to 16 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. "When there are genuine romantic cases, they like each other and they want to get married... Don't treat such cases the same as criminal cases," the bench said. The bench went on, "You have to keep the reality of society in mind." The top court referred to the trauma such couples face, generally owing to the male partner being sent to jail by the parents of the girl after filing a case under the POCSO Act. "This is the harsh reality in society," the bench said, noting cases under the POCSO Act were also filed to cover up elopements. Senior advocate H S Phoolka, appearing for the petitioner organisation, called for safeguards. The bench observed that the police would look into the matters to ascertain whether it was a case of kidnapping, trafficking or whether it was a case of genuine love. Phoolka said a similar issue concerning the age of consent was being considered by another bench of the apex court. The bench posted the matter for August 26 after Phoolka said he would place on record some top court orders in the context of the prayers sought for in the petition. Recently, the Centre defended in the apex court the statutory age of consent of 18 years, saying the decision was a "deliberate, well-considered, and coherent" policy choice aimed at shielding minors from sexual exploitation. The Centre said diluting the age of consent or introducing exceptions under the guise of adolescent romance would be not only legally unsound but also dangerous. The written submissions was filed in a separate case which raises the point of age in adolescent relationships.

West Agartala Police bust notorious gang ahead of Durga Puja, four arrested
Agartala (Tripura) [India], August 19 (ANI): The West Agartala Police have successfully busted a gang of miscreants involved in a series of thefts and robberies across different parts of the state. Four notorious criminals were arrested following a late-night operation near the Agartala-Bangladesh border on Monday arrested have been identified as Shakil Mia, Mintu Rudra Pal, Juton Mia, and Amar Das.'This is a big achievement for us, especially before Durga Puja," a senior police officer said. 'The operation highlights the bravery of our personnel and the professionalism of the Agartala Police. Our jurisdiction lies close to the Bangladesh border, covering about 11 kilometers, and we remain constantly vigilant against cross-border and local crimes."According to police sources, acting on specific intelligence, a special operation was launched to detain the gang members. Office in Charge of West Agartala PS Rana Chatterjee said, 'We received information at our West Police Station that a group of miscreants, known for committing thefts and robberies in different areas, had gathered near a location close to the Agartala-Bangladesh border. Acting on this information, we launched an operation to detain them. When we reached the spot at night, they attempted to escape, but we chased them down and, with great bravery, managed to apprehend them."He said that during the operation, one of the constables was attacked and injured.'However, despite being wounded, he demonstrated the courage and determination of the Tripura Police and, along with his team, successfully detained two of the culprits. Based on the information obtained from those two, we arrested two more from Bishalgarh. This gang was particularly involved in looting in Agartala, Udaipur, and Bishalgarh areas. They mainly targeted elderly people, committed burglaries in houses, stole motorbikes, and were linked to various other criminal activities," he further said that catching such a gang is indeed a big achievement. The success of this operation reflects the professionalism of the Agartala Police. 'From the accused, we recovered three stolen motorbikes and some gold ornaments. They have now been sent to remand, and we expect to extract more information during interrogation. Since our police station covers an 11-kilometre stretch along the Bangladesh border, we always remain alert to prevent any such incidents. Apprehending these four notorious criminals before Durga Puja is a major achievement," he said that the arrested individuals are identified as Shakil Mia, Mintu Rudra Pal, Juton Mia, and Amar Das. Two are already in remand, and the other two are being sent shortly.'Although our jurisdiction lies near the Bangladesh border, we are fully capable of dealing with all kinds of offenders and crimes, whether cross-border crimes or any other crimes in border areas, with complete professionalism," he gang, police revealed, was mainly active in Agartala, Udaipur, and Bishalgarh, targeting elderly residents, breaking into houses, and stealing motorbikes. They were also linked to several other cases of the arrested individuals, police recovered three stolen motorbikes and gold ornaments.
