NBFCs' rate transmission to end users weaker than banks: RBI
MUMBAI: The Reserve Bank of India is of the view that linking finance companies'
lending rates
with external benchmarks is not feasible even as the regulator is aiming at improving weak transmission of policy rates.
RBI
's annual report released on Thursday shows that transmission of policy rate to end borrowers is the lowest by non-banking finance companies (
NBFCs
) as compared with banks and an attempt to link finance companies' lending rates to policy rates was "not found feasible at this juncture."
The RBI annual report shows that between May 2022 and March 2025, the RBI net raised the repo rate by 225 basis points (bps). In the same period, NBFCs passed on a 38-bps rate hike to borrowers, while commercial banks have hiked rates by 105 bps. This implies that the transmission of policy rate by finances companies is weak.

The RBI said that it aims to strengthen further the analysis of the transmission of policy impulses to lending rates of non-banking financial companies.

In the annual report, RBI stated that in 2024-25, it had examined the feasibility of the introduction of the external benchmark-based lending rate (EBLR) system of loan pricing for credit extended by NBFCs to select sectors. This is because the
EBLR regime
has quickened the pace of transmission.
The RBI analysed lending rates and sectoral credit data of NBFCs but it found that it was not feasible introduce EBLR for NBFCs. Under EBLR system, banks have to link lending rates charged to home buyers and small businessmen to an external benchmark which could be either the repo rate (now at 6%) or the treasury bills issued by the RBI.
Nearly 60.6% of the
commercial bank loans
as of December 31, 2024 are linked to the EBLR system, while 35.9% is linked to the marginal cost of lending rate- an internal benchmark rate and 1.6% is linked to the Bank Rate.
The RBI has stated that it aims to strengthen the assessment of monetary policy transmission, monthly data on lending rates of major NBFCs. "The interest rates charged by NBFCs tend to be higher as compared to commercial banks reflecting their liability structure and the risk profile of borrowers, thus the degree of monetary policy transmission differs between NBFCs and banks," RBI said. The RBI report also pointed out that NBFCs remain 'significantly dependent on banks for funding, underscoring the need for greater diversification of their funding sources.' The regulator added that scale-based regulatory framework is likely to further improve governance and risk management.

MCC collects record property tax in 1st 2 months of financial year
Mysuru: The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) collected an impressive Rs 150 crore plus in property tax within the first two months of the 2025–26 financial year. The collection was boosted by a 5% rebate offered to property owners. This amount represents over 63.3% of the annual target of Rs 237 crore set for the current fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. The rebate of 5% is extended till June 30. The city has approximately 2.25 lakh registered properties, of which 1.95 lakh are revenue-generating. Spread across nine zones and 65 wards, these properties form the primary base for property tax collection, which remains MCC's single largest source of revenue alongside the water cess. In the past two fiscal years, MCC collected Rs 183.82 crore against a target of Rs 214.55 crore in 2023–24, and Rs 210.03 crore against a target of Rs 251.41 crore in 2024–25. This year, with the current momentum, MCC is on track to potentially exceed its target. Speaking to TOI, Shaikh Tanveer Asif, commissioner, Mysuru City Corporation, said: "It's a record collection in just two months." The success is a result of coordinated efforts across all nine zones. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Crossing Rs 150 crore so early will significantly enhance our ability to provide improved civic amenities to Mysuru's citizens, he said. He also urged remaining property owners to take advantage of the 5% rebate, which remains available until the end of the month. "If you don't pay property tax, there is no way out. Corporation will collect tax, hence the people should not delay in paying property tax. They should make use of the five percent rebate and pay the tax at the earliest. The revenue from property tax plays a crucial role in taking up the projects within the corporation limits," the commissioner added. Trump vs Musk: DOGE staff fear fallout; public feud sparks anxiety over political targeting- report
Following the public spat between US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk , staff members at the Musk-established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are reportedly experiencing increasing concerns about their professional future and potential targeting by the administration Current DOGE personnel embedded within federal agencies are concerned that the public dispute between Trump and Musk might expose them to political consequences and affect their career opportunities, multiple sources with knowledge of internal discussions told ABC News. Personnel fear their DOGE connection could make them vulnerable if tensions escalate and Trump initiates an investigation into the government-reduction programme that Musk headed until his recent departure, the sources indicated. There are additional concerns that Trump's potential distancing from DOGE could negatively impact their professional standing. Musk, who leads Tesla and SpaceX, developed a close relationship with Trump during the past year while supporting his re-election campaign before establishing DOGE to support Trump's federal government reduction objectives. DOGE, as a quasi-governmental body, has sparked debates due to its agency closures and access to sensitive information. The relationship between the president and the world's wealthiest individual deteriorated into social media confrontation on Thursday, with Musk criticising Trump for "ingratitude" regarding the 2024 election, whilst Trump threatened to "terminate Elon's governmental subsidies and contracts." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo The public clash between Trump andMusk has intensified, following Musk's disapproval of a significant domestic policy initiative by Trump. The conflict between the two wealthy individuals heightened on Thursday as they traded harsh words on their respective social media platforms, indicating the end of their previous alliance. Trump initiated the exchange by expressing disappointment over Musk's criticism of his administration's primary tax and spending legislation, what he labelled as his 'one big, beautiful bill'. In response, Musk claimed credit for Trump's electoral success, stating: "Without me, Trump would have lost the election". The deterioration in their relationship occurred after Musk's sustained opposition to Trump's significant spending legislation, which received approval from the US House and awaits Senate consideration. Following his departure from the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) after 129 days of service, Musk utilised X to denounce the bill as a "disgusting abomination", adding: "Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong." Musk expressed concerns about the legislation's impact on US national debt levels and urged his followers to contact their representatives to voice opposition to the spending proposal. During this disagreement, War Room presenter and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, who has historically criticised Musk, urged the president to investigate the billionaire following Thursday's incident. "This is a national security issue," Bannon stated on his programme Thursday. "We're dealing with a very unstable individual out saying dangerous things about the president of the United States. He must be investigated . .. and all government contracts should be suspended." Several key Musk associates who served as special government employees, including Steve Davis, the DOGE operational lead, left with Musk . However, numerous DOGE staff remain integrated across federal agencies, including the Office of Personnel Management, Veterans Affairs, Treasury, IRS, and Social Security Administration, the ABC News sources confirmed. Musk's exit represented a significant shift for DOGE's daily operations, as officials like Davis had managed DOGE activities across federal government for months. Following Musk's departure, DOGE staff will maintain their reporting structure to respective agency leadership, the sources indicated. The White House recently stated that "DOGE leaders are each and every member of the president's cabinet and the president himself." Sources further informed ABC News that some current DOGE federal government staff have begun seeking alternative employment. Despite concerns about future career prospects, several technology companies have shown interest in recruiting DOGE alumni, with Coinbase creating a specific hiring portal for former DOGE staff. Meanwhile, regarding potential DOGE investigations, a White House adviser indicated the president's focus remains on his signature spending legislation, the "Big Beautiful Bill." Despite the public disagreement, Trump has not publicly criticised DOGE and previously praised the initiative. During a recent Oval Office press event, Trump commended Musk's transformation of Washington's operational methods and described DOGE as a significant government reform programme. Upon leaving the Trump administration, Musk minimised DOGE's dependence on his leadership, stating, "DOGE is a way of life, like Buddhism. You wouldn't ask the question, 'Who would lead Buddhism?'"

RBI cuts repo rate by 50 bps to 5.50 pc
Mumbai, June 6 (UNI) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday in its second bi-monthly monetary policy of FY26. cut the repo rate by 50 basis points (bps) to 5.50 pc from 6.00 pc earlier. This is the central bank's third consecutive repo rate cut. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra-led Monetary Policy led committee decided to cut the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 100 basis points (bps) to 3% from 4% earlier releasing Rs 2.5 lakh crore of lendable resources to the banking system. The MPC also decided to change the policy stance to 'Neutral' from 'Accommodative' in a bid to support economic growth. This RBI's rate cut decision is expected to stimulate borrowing and investment, leading to a higher growth rate. The policy panel retained growth estimate at 6.5 per cent but projected a lower inflation of 3.7 per cent in the current fiscal. Malhotra asserted that the global backdrop remains fragile, and trade projections have been revised downwards, but the Indian economy is progressing well despite the global uncertainties. "India's strength comes from the strong balance sheets of the five major sectors. The Indian economy offers immense opportunities to local and foreign investors. We are already growing at a fast rate. We aspire to grow faster," he said. Inflation has softened significantly, the RBI Governor said, and the near-term and medium-term outlook exudes confidence. Food inflation outlook remains soft, and core inflation is expected to remain benign. The RBI also projected that retail inflation for the current financial year would be 3.7% against its April projection of 4%. Government data shows it fell to 3.16% in April from 3.34% in March, remaining within the RBI's comfort level. The various economic indicators remain strong, with the RBI Governor pointing to a gradual rise in discretionary spending and healthy private consumption. Industrial activity is gaining gradually while the services sector is likely to maintain momentum, he said. Rural demand remains steady while urban demand is improving, he added. The RBI kept the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth projection unchanged at 6.5% in the current financial year. The quarterly projections are: 2.9% (April-June), 3.4% (July-September), 3.9% (October-December), and 4.4% (January-March). The Central bank also reduced the cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 100 bps and said it will release Rs 2.5 lakh crore of bank funds. CRR refers to the percentage of total deposits that banks must hold in liquid form with the RBI. India continues to be an attractive investment destination, assured Mr Malhotra, adding that the forex reserves stand at $691 billion, which is sufficient to fund more than 11 months of goods imports.
