Angels Make Historic Announcement After Cardinals Game
The Los Angeles Angels picked up their third win of the MLB season on Monday, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in extra innings. Now 3-1 through four games, Los Angeles is off to a strong start after losing a franchise record 99 games last season.
While the Angels made some external moves this offseason, they were also aggressive with some internal promotions. This included the decision to name right-handed relief pitcher Ryan Johnson to the Opening Day roster after no MiLB games.

Drafted in the second round by the Angels in 2024, Johnson went straight to the big leagues after six Spring Training appearances.

With Monday's game going to extra innings and the Angels having used a lot of relievers during their opening series in Chicago, Johnson was called upon in the 10th inning for his first career save opportunity. Nailing down the save, Johnson finished off the win for Los Angeles, making MLB history in the process.
"Among all MLB players to go straight from the Draft to the Majors without playing in the minor leagues, Ryan Johnson is the first to record his first career save within his first two games," the Angels announced on X.
The Angels are known for being aggressive with recently drafted prospects, having promoted first baseman Nolan Schanuel to the majors after just 22 minor league games. Looking for any spark to help them return to the playoffs for the first time since 2014, the Angels are relying on a combination of veterans and young players.
