Central Peoria business closed until further notice after SUV crashes into it
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — An SUV crashed through the wall of a Central Peoria restaurant Sunday evening, causing it to close until further notice. The Peoria Fire Department was called at 8:16 p.m. Sunday evening to Sharkey's Fish and Chicken at the corner of North Sterling Avenue and West Forrest Hill Avenue to a report of a vehicle crashing into the building, Battalion Chief Rick Waldron said. When firefighters arrived, they found a mid-sized SUV had crashed through the wall of the restaurant and was completely inside the building, he said. The few customers, the staff and the driver were able to get out of the building safely on their own he said. The driver was treated for minor injuries and then was 'released to the custody of Peoria PD,' he said. It is not clear if the driver was cited or arrested for the incident, and the police department did not immediately respond to WMBD's inquiry. Gas and electricity were shut off, and the city's code enforcement was called to the scene, but no cost of damages was given, Waldron said. The building sustained heavy damage and will be closed until further notice, he said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
