Apostolos Stamatelopoulos reckons he's getting closer to full sharpness
Apostolos Stamatelopoulos was frustrated not to score against Rangers on Saturday, but reckons he's getting closer and closer to top form.

The Australian striker got off the mark in the 3-0 win over Morton in Motherwell's Premier Sports Cup group stages finale, and bagged a late equaliser in the friendly against Hertha Berlin on July 25.

That type of finish, nipping between defenders to sneak the ball in, is what Stamatelopoulos lives for, and he reckons they will come – even if he did everything except score against the Ibrox giants.

He said: 'I definitely should have scored at least one of those chances, but I'm confident that it will come and I can start to put the ball in the back of the net.
'It's just one of those days, really, where it wasn't going for me, but I'm confident that as the season goes on, I'll definitely start hitting the back of the net.
'If I keep banging on the door it will open. I've scored two in the last two, and one of those was a friendly, but I was high on confidence going into this game.
'I think I was just lacking a little bit of sharpness. The header was close, I feel I got up well, I just needed to direct it a bit more, and it's those final little touches.
'But I can definitely see goals coming in the next couple of games.'

Having come through a series of injuries last season, Stamatelopoulos is eager to get back to full fitness and wants more goals like the one against Hertha, where he latched onto a Callum Slattery cross from the right to steer the ball in at the near post.
He said: 'It's what I live for in the box, those little ratty goals, getting in between defenders and finding space, and I felt I was doing that well, it's just the sharpness in finishing it off.

'I definitely think we could have walked away with three points [against Rangers], but we're happy with the point.'
Motherwell head to Paisley on Saturday to take on St Mirren, and Stamatelopoulos said: 'It's a very important game, and hopefully we're going into it, wanting three points, to build on this performance.
'We're happy.'

That improved offer of at least 80m euros (£69.5m) has been followed by Ruben Amorim's United cementing their long-standing interest with a bid of their own. The Gers boss hit out at some of his squad following their deflating 1-1 draw at Motherwell on Saturday, questioning mentality, egos and application, and captain James Tavernier and midfielder Nicolas Raskin were the biggest names left out among the expected changes. Martin got the required reaction as winger Djeidi Gassama scored after 15 minutes with his third European goal in three ties before returning striker Cyriel Dessers added a second from the spot just before the interval. Gassama, signed this summer from Sheffield Wednesday, scored a third in the 51st minute to put the Govan side into a commanding lead and eventually a comfortable win. Partey bailed over rape charges Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been granted conditional bail after appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court on rape and sexual assault charges. The Ghanaian, 32, has been charged with five counts of rape against two women, as well as a charge of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player. Wednesday's players refused to feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley on Saturday after wages were not paid on time for the fourth time in five months. Sheffield Wednesday Supporters' Trust plans to protest against under-fire owner Dejphon Chansiri during Sunday's televised match against the Foxes at the King Power Stadium. Asked if there was a prospect of players going on strike, Bannan, who on Saturday signed a new contract at Hillsborough, told talkSPORT: 'No, I don't think so. 'We pulled out of the Burnley game at the weekend, that was simply because it's happened too much now and I think it's a lot easier to pull put of a pre-season friendly game than it is a Championship fixture.' What's on today? League of Ireland side Shelbourne travel to Croatia to play Rijeka in the Europa League third qualifying round. There are six matches in the third qualifying round of the Champions League including Nice against Benfica and Feyenoord against Fenerbahce.

World media reacts as Rangers leave Viktoria 'burning' and praying for Champions League miracle in Plzen

Russell Martin's big changes paid off as the Light Blues ran out 3-0 winners to take a huge stride towards the play-off round The Czech media were blown away after Rangers dazzled and sunk a Plzen side now praying for a miracle on home turf. ‌ Djeidi Gassama was at the double and Cyriel Dessers was on target from the penalty spot in a 3-0 win at Ibrox that leaves Russell Martin's team with one foot in the play-off round. ‌ The Ibrox gaffer made some huge pre-match calls by making four changes to his side including benching skipper James Tavernier and midfielder Nico Raskin and handing an instant debut to new £4million signing Oliver Antman. ‌ His decisions paid off with the winger putting in a dazzling display with his troops taking one big stride towards the final hurdle and the £40m jackpot that awaits if they reach the Champions League proper. Record Sport looks at how the Czech media and beyond reacted to the big result in Govan. Lidovky Novini (Czech Republic) The Pilsen players have fallen significantly short of advancing to the final preliminary round of the Champions League qualification. In Scotland, they lost 0:3 after a poor performance, and only a miracle will save them in the home rematch, which will be played next Tuesday. Based on the performance they showed on Scottish soil, their ceiling in European competition is number two. Without Pavel Šulc, the offensive star who headed to Lyon, they didn't create many opportunities in Glasgow. But above all, Viktoria was burning in the back. ‌ Pilsen was most affected by the agile youngster Djeidi Gassama, a French footballer originally from Mauritania. He made deadly attacks from the left side towards the Plzeň goal, he made Memic's head spin for a moment and then Dweh's again. Straightforward, fast, technical, in short, a very interesting player. iSport (Czech Republic) The Scottish team showed above-standard quality mainly in the offensive phase. The two-goal striker Djeidi Gassama was the main scorer, supported by the fresh reinforcement from Oliver Antman. ‌ The Scottish wind practically blew away Pilsen's dreams of advancing to the next round of the Champions League qualifiers on Tuesday night. Glasgow's high-quality offensive broke down Pilsen's defense at key moments, eventually taking a 3-0 lead into the rematch. Against Pilsen, the referee's strict verdict before the penalty made it 2-0, when he whistled for an alleged foul on Matěj Vydr. On the other hand, the home team had other decent chances to make the difference in the score even greater. ‌ Plzeň didn't handle the signs of offensive actions well at all. Viktoria takes home a cruel result and begins the post-Šulc era with the biggest defeat of the season. Ruik (Czech Republic) Viktoria Plzeň was unable to resist the favored Rangers and lost 0:3 in the first match of the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The Scots were uncompromising in the finishing and the Czech team had no right to a good result. ‌ Sporza (Belgium) Rangers have taken a major step towards a potential clash with Club Brugge in the final qualifying round of the Champions League. However, the blue-and-blacks still have to deal with Red Bull Salzburg tomorrow [tonight] and next week. For Rangers, the job seems to be done after a 3-0 victory against Viktoria Plzeň. Cyriel Dessers contributed with an assist and a penalty goal. The draw for the play-offs, the final round before the group stage, has already been made for the third qualifying round of the Champions League . This means Club Brugge already knows that Rangers or Viktoria Plzeň will be their next opponents if they defeat Red Bull Salzburg. ‌ It seems quite likely that the blue-blacks will primarily have to scout the Scottish club. Rangers already defeated the Czechs 3-0 in the first leg. Next week Viktoria Plzeň will get a second chance at home, but making up three goals will be a tough task in the return leg. LAOLA 1 (Austria) Glasgow Rangers celebrate a clear 3-0 home victory over Viktoria Plzen in the first leg of the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League . The home side dominated the game from the start, and this was reflected on the scoreboard. ‌ The Scots already have one foot in the Champions League playoffs after the first leg, where FC Red Bull Salzburg could be waiting. The "Bulls" still have to eliminate Belgian runners-up Club Bruges on their way there. The Guardian (United Kingdom) Russell Martin's bold team selection paid off as Rangers defeated Viktoria Plzen 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie at Ibrox. Martin hit out at some of his squad following their deflating 1-1 draw at Motherwell on Saturday, questioning mentality, egos and application and the captain, James Tavernier, and the midfielder Nicolas Raskin were the biggest names among the expected changes. Martin got the required reaction as the winger Djeidi Gassama scored after 15 minutes before the returning striker Cyriel Dessers added a second from the spot just before the interval. Gassama, signed this summer from Sheffield Wednesday, scored his side's third in the 51st minute to put the Govan side into a commanding lead and eventually a comfortable win.

We must build on Rangers draw at St Mirren, says Motherwell boss

Jens Berthel Askou intends to continue progress at Fir Park Jens Berthel Askou admits Motherwell must build on their draw against Rangers when they travel to St Mirren on Saturday – and has no doubt that they will. ‌ The Dane has been pleased with progress so far, and reckons they're getting better and better. ‌ Askou's side followed up a creditable draw in their friendly against Hertha Berlin by snatching a point at the death against Rangers, with Emmanuel Longelo's second goal of the season cancelling out James Tavernier's first-half headed opener. ‌ Sub Tom Sparrow passed up a chance to take all three points, seeing his shot well blocked by Jack Butland inside stoppage time. Motherwell turn their attention to Paisley, in hopes of bagging their first Premiership win of the campaign. And Askou said: 'It's really important to build on this. ‌ 'We've come from a period of time where we've had two games a week, and now for the rest couple of months it will be one game a week, which gives us some time to work on some details that we need. 'It's hard to train that attacking transition, when you play twice a week, and that's where we need to sharpen up a little bit, because we had a lot of opportunities [against Rangers]. 'Now we have another good week, after a good start, and I'm sure the group will do their very best to use every second on the training pitch to improve, because they are hungry for more. ‌ 'I think we already have confidence in what we're doing. We've been very effective in what we're doing, and we want to be even more effective in terms of the chances we've created. 'But we've played some really good football in the pre-season and we've improved. ‌ 'We played a very good game against Hertha and [Saturday] was a step up, a performance at a good international level, against a team and a club that might be in the Champions League in a couple of weeks from now. 'I'm really happy with the progress, with the confidence that there is in the team already, and for sure this is going to push everyone in the right direction.' Askou says Lennon Miller is recovering from injury, and there's nothing new to add, as speculation mounts over a big-money move. ‌ He said: 'Everyone has potentially played their last game for Motherwell if there comes a big club, who put an offer on the table that we can't resist. 'But Lennon has done really well in his recovery with the staff, and we knew it was going to be a long shot if we were going to make him ready for this weekend. ‌ 'But I think there is a very good opportunity that he will be ready for next week, if he's still here. 'For now he's still a Motherwell player, so we are doing our very best to prepare him to be part of what we're doing next week.' On potential signings, Askou said: 'We are working hard in the background because we're still too few, and we need to add some width and extra quality, to raise the level of competition. 'We'll see if we make something happen during the week. If not there is a new week after that, but we're doing it as fast as we can.'
