Brokerages view on NTPC
NTPC's FY25 capacity addition stood at 3.97GW, including ~3.3GW for renewable (RE). With 33.7GW under construction and targeted addition of 11.8GW in FY26 and 9.9GW in FY27, growth visibility remains strong, according to analysts.
With the addition of 4,580MW of conventional capacity in FY26 and with the multiple growth drivers at work (thermal, hydro, nuclear), NTPC is poised for significant growth in future and will play in important role in India's energy transition journey, analysts at JM Financial Institutional Securities said in the company update. The brokerage firm maintains its BUY rating on the stock with a target price of ₹390, valuing it at 2.3x Mar'27 regulated equity.
FY26 will be a momentous year for NTPC, marked by three feats of leadership and support to the national priority of energy security; all-time high organic capacity addition, commissioning of its first pumped hydro storage plant and, foundation stone of its first nuclear power plant, analysts said.
Additionally, the company is on its way to award a new stream of projects (13.6GW thermal and 4.6GW PSP) during FY26-28. With multiple growth drivers at work (thermal, hydro, nuclear), NTPC is poised for significant growth in future and will play an important role in India's energy transition journey, the brokerage firm said. NTPC is a play on energy transition as well as energy security. Analysts at Elara Capital in Q4 result update said that they believe its regulated equity base will increase on addition of thermal capacity. An expanding RE pipeline and foray into new business verticals of green hydrogen pumped hydro storage and nuclear should drive growth. The stock is trading at attractive valuation. 'We retain Buy with a target price of ₹462 on better visibility on regulated returns and traction in RE initiatives based on 2.5x FY27E P/B regulated equity, and 1.0x (unchanged) in cash and investment,' analysts said.
Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL) however, maintains its neutral stance on NTPC due to sluggish installed capacity expansion over FY25-27 at both the standalone (~5 per cent) and consolidated ex-NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) (~9 per cent) levels. The brokerage views that the valuation for NGEL - accounting for ~17 per cent of its SOTP - will remain under pressure amid execution challenges. In FY25, NGEL commissioned 1.9GW (incl. 50 per cent share in the Ayana acquisition of 2.1GW), significantly below its guided capacity growth of 3GW. Lastly, analysts at MOFSL believe the FY27E dividend yield of 2.7 per cent remains modest and lower than peers such as Power Grid Corporation of India or PWGR (FY27: 3.4 per cent). ALSO READ |
NTPC is India's largest power generation company with a total installed capacity of ~79930 MW at the group level as of FY25. NTPC has 17 per cent of total installed capacity in India with 24 per cent generation share. The company's vision is to become a 130 GW+ company by 2032 of which 60 GW would be contributed by renewable energy.

Rupee surges 75 paise to close at 86.03 against U.S. dollar as global crude oil prices crash

The rupee recovered from record low level and closed with a steep gain of 75 paise at 86.03 (provisional) against the U.S. dollar as global crude oil prices went down following hopes of de-escalation in West Asia tensions. A weak greenback and positive sentiments in the domestic equity markets further boosted the local unit, according to forex traders. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, plummeted 3.19% to $69.20 per barrel in futures trade as U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Iran and Israel agreed to a ceasefire. At the interbank foreign exchange, the local unit opened at 86.07 against the U.S. dollar and traded in the range of 85.91-86.27 before closing at 86.03 (provisional), up 75 paise from its previous close. The rupee had plunged 23 paise to close at a five-month low of 86.78 against the U.S. dollar on Monday. Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, said the rupee gained on improved global risk sentiments on reports of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Also, Choudhary said a sharp decline in crude oil prices and positive domestic markets favoured the rupee, while the dollar index softened amid the ceasefire reports. Going forward, he said, traders may take cues from US consumer confidence and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's testimony. "USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of Rs 85.60-86.40." Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.48% lower at 97.94. In the domestic equity market Sensex rose 158.32 points to settle at 82,055.11, while Nifty climbed 72.45 points to 25,044.35. Markets trim gains on renewed geopolitical tensions in Middle East; Sensex rises 150 points

Equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty on Tuesday (June 24, 2025) gave up most of their sharp intra-day gains due to the emergence of profit-taking as investors turned cautious amid reports of a ceasefire violation between Iran and Israel. In the morning trade, markets bounced back sharply, mirroring a rally in global peers and a steep decline in crude oil prices amid hopes of a potential de-escalation in the Middle East conflict. After surging 1,121.37 points or 1.36% to 83,018.16 in intra-day trade, the 30-share Sensex later trimmed most of its gains as reports surfaced of the ceasefire plan faltering. But the benchmark still managed to settle in the green, climbing 158.32 points or 0.19% to 82,055.11. On similar lines, the 50-share Nifty rose 72.45 points or 0.29% to end at 25,044.35. The index fell from an intra-day high of 25,317.70. 'Initial gains in the domestic market, driven by the ceasefire announcement and sharp drop in crude prices, were short-lived as renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East unsettled investor sentiment. 'Adding to the uncertainty was heightened volatility due to expiry day dynamics. Although the market attempted to break out of its recent consolidation range, persistent global risks continue to impede momentum,' Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said. From the Sensex constituents, Adani Ports, Tata Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Finserv and Titan were among the biggest gainers. In contrast, Power Grid, Trent, NTPC, Maruti, HCL Tech and Bharat Electronics were among the laggards. In Asian markets, South Korea's Kospi, Japan's Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai's SSE Composite index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng settled significantly higher. European markets were trading with gains in mid-session trade. U.S. markets ended in positive territory on Monday (June 23, 2025). Global oil benchmark Brent crude dropped 3.20% to $69.13 a barrel. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹1,874.38 crore on Monday (June 23, 2025), while Domestic Institutional Investors (DII) bought stocks worth ₹5,591.77 crore, according to exchange data. On Monday (June 23, 2025), the 30-share BSE Sensex ended with a loss of 511.38 points or 0.62% at 81,896.79. The Nifty dropped 140.50 points or 0.56% to 24,971.90.

Centre mulls relief for Vodafone Idea as threat of insolvency looms

The Centre is considering further relief for telecom giant Vodafone Idea (Vi) on its regulatory outstanding dues of ₹84,000 crore amid concerns that it might go bankrupt without executive support, The Economic Times reported on Tuesday. The government is considering extending the repayment period for adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues from the current six years to 20 years, while also shifting from compound to simple interest on the outstanding amount, the report claimed. Another proposal reportedly under discussion is to have Vi pay a nominal amount—around ₹1,000–1,500 crore annually—towards the dues until a broader resolution on AGR liabilities is reached. In addition to the two main proposals, officials are also evaluating other solutions, with the possibility of offering relief through a single measure or a combination of approaches. According to the report, the government is trying to keep the company afloat because it holds 49 per cent stake in the telecom major. Not good enough to have a duopoly, says Union minister Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the need for a competitive telecom sector, stating that the country cannot afford to rely on just one or two operators. 'It's not good enough having a duopoly or one carrier or two carriers,' Scindia said at an event in Delhi. He added, 'India must have competition in every sector. India today is probably the only country in the world for competition in ISP domain," he said, as quoted by Moneycontrol. In an interview to Business Standard earlier this month, he said, "My job is to provide multiple players, whether it's in satellite, or broadband, or internet service providers or telcos." However, he did not discuss what further relief the Centre is considering for Vi. After Tuesday's report of government considering relief, shares of Vodafone Idea were trading up by over 5.9 per cent at ₹6.92 apiece at the BSE on Tuesday. Vi warns of insolvency by FY26 Last month, Vi reportedly told the Centre it will not be able to operate beyond FY26 without government's support. It added that given its mounting expenses and lack of support from banks, it might just have to file for insolvency with the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). The beleaguered telco claimed that it hasn't received any support from the banks despite a ₹26,000 crore equity infusion and ₹36,950 crore equity conversion from the Union government. The plea to the government came after dismissal from the Supreme Court to waive off its AGR dues. Looming dues Cash-strapped Vi had reported total deferred payment obligations of ₹2.02 trillion at the end of the third quarter (October–December) of FY25. As part of the telecom reforms package approved by the Cabinet in September 2021, the government had allowed financially stressed telcos to convert a part of their debt owed to the government into equity. With the four-year payment moratorium ending in September 2025, Vi faces substantial payment obligations. Between then and March 2026, the company has to pay ₹12,000 crore to the government, including both principal and interest. Subsequently, it is required to pay ₹43,000 crore annually for five years, from FY27 to FY31.
